INFORMATION TO CCEP

CCEPAs an international school that is open all day, it is our responsibility to offer Primary School students an ed-ucational and recreational program daily as a complement to more formalized class time. The Co-Curricula Educational Program (CCEP) gives our students the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and develop and extend existing skills in fields of interest. The goal of the Co-Curricula Educational Program is to create additional educational options outside of the regular school program in order to foster individual talents and passions. As part of an accredited IB school, our core mission consists of cultivating students’ self-awareness, stoking their thirst for knowledge, promoting dialogue with one another, and fostering a sense of community between students from different backgrounds.

The Co-Curricula Educational Program is the social-pedagogical department of the Berlin Metropolitan School and offers students of the Primary School a comprehensive educational, developmental, and supervisory program that both complements and supplements their daily classroom time. Our international team for the Primary School is comprised of a host of professionally educated individuals and is furthermore supported by German young adults completing their voluntary civic service (Freiwiliges Soziales Jahr, or FSJ).

The CCEP’s goal is to provide BMS students with an inspirational and educational environment, one in which they can discover and further develop their passions and interests through our multifaceted and diverse Club Program. We approach education as a process of self-determination. For this reason, we create learning spaces and a safe environment within which students can actively and creatively engage, and perhaps most importantly, intimately connect learning with fun.

Alongside the extension and expansion of learning and educational possibilities, the CCEP Team’s role is to offer support during classroom time. The In-Class Assistance (ICA) program assigns each Primary School classroom a CCEP Educator that forms an important part of each respective teaching team. The CCEP Edu-cator is responsible for the social and emotional well-being of all students.

Furthermore, the CCEP offers the Primary School varied and engaging holiday programs, complete with field trips in and outside Berlin, sports and exercise activities, as well as a number of creative workshops for every interest.

IN-CLASS ASSISTANCE Based on our approaches to teaching and learning we understand the In-Class Assistance (ICA) as an en-richment to the student learning process. Since its inception, the multivalent focus of a CCEP member’s daily work in class is the social and emotional well-being of the each student which is furthermore supplemented by academic support. Within the ICA we better cater the individual learning and emotional needs for every student. The social pedagogical education of every CCEP Staff Member enriches the learning of every stu-dent both in the formal learning and even more the in-formal process. CCEP members monitor the general classroom dynamic, ensuring an environment where all students feel accepted and encouraging students’ development through reiteration of the PYP’s learner profile attributes. With the ICA we provide every student and parent an all day long “caregiver” and contact person.

AFTERNOON PROGRAMThe goal of the CCEP Afternoon Program between 3:00pm and 6:00pm is to create further educational opportunities outside of the daily school hours in order to foster students’ individual interests and passions. As part of an accredited IB school, our core mission consists of cultivating students’ self-awareness, stoking their thirst for knowledge, promoting dialogue with one another, and fostering a sense of community between students from different backgrounds. For this reason, our mission is to create a complementary balance bet-ween free, supervised play and clubs. In consideration of the needs of our international community, the CCEP Afternoon program is conducted bilingually, in both English and German. In this way, students who are new in Berlin – or simply new to German as a foreign language – can practice and employ German in the CCEP in

a more informal context. Through past experience, we know this affords students an important opportunity to acquire and become more confident in their German language abilities. Moreover, the international orientation of our team is maintained, as each CCEP Educator and Club instructor can seamlessly switch between func-tional proficiency in German and English, in addition to a number of additional foreign languages according to CCEP-educators personal background and experience.

CCEP Rooms for Primary studentsA clear organizational system – based upon students’ grade level – is the ideal basis for guaranteeing both safety and age-appropriate educational and developmental support in the implementation of the CCEP. Fur-thermore, such a system of organization lends more order and structure to both students and parents alike. ClubsWe offer a diverse portfolio of educational and support activities within the framework of the Co-Curricula Educational Program. We encourage all students to enroll in their allotted maximum of two Clubs for grade 1 - 2 and maximum 3 Clubs for grade 3 - 6 and Secondary Students per school year. Due to the spectrum of activities on offer – such as projects that take place at different times throughout the year as well as open offers and recreational time – we ask participants to plan carefully when choosing an activity. The goal of the CCEP is to promote our students’ overall well-being and performance in the afternoons. We strive to strike a healthy balance between formal instruction and afternoon club activities in order to generate a strong learning environment. The content and form of the CCEP Club Program place emphasis on the physical and cognitive development of our students, in addition to the promotion of individual student talents and passions.

BMS Sports Teams – “BMS HAWKS”BMS fully supports the various BMS Sports Teams collective called BMS Hawks. In this more formal capacity, students selected for the BMS Sports Teams represent the BMS school community at official events and compete against other schools and institutions in both league and tournament games. The players for the teams are generally recruited from BMS Sports Clubs. Our goal is to is to compete in both regional, national, and international games and tournaments as well as teach our students both the discipline and enjoyment of organized, competitive sports. Accordingly, this means BMS is represented not only at local games and tournaments, but also those within Germany and in neighboring European countries.

BMS Hawks Teams include Soccer, Basketball, Cross Country, Chess, Table Tennis, and Cheerleading.

Language Courses The CCEP Language portfolio includes language courses in Spanish, French, German and Mandarin Chinese.

German Language Classes for BMS Parents This is a German language course designed for BMS parents with limited to no previous knowledge of Ger-man. This will be a light and informal way for parents to learn some useful basic phrases, or to deepenthe ex-tent of their German knowledge, while simultaneously meeting new people within the BMS school community. You can find further information about this course in the club description section of this booklet.

CASCAS lies at the heart of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The acronym CAS stands for Creati-vity, Activity, and Service, and complements the challenging IB academic program in a holistic way, providing opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, volunteering, and accomplishment. CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal growth and maturation as a responsible young adult and global citizen. Students must engage in CAS experiences involving all three CAS strands as a prerequisite for gradu-ation from the IBDP. Opportunities for accumulating CAS experience are also structurally integrated within the CCEP program, primarily through Student-Led Offers.

Exam WeekDuring exam weeks, all clubs and projects are cancelled.


Recreational TimeJean Piaget, an extremely influential cognitive theorist working in the field of modern education, once stated that recreational time is, “Requirements for an emotional and intellectual balance of the child is that which in everyday life finds a field of activity in which it is not all about adapting to the reality, but on the contrary to the assimilation of the reality of the self, without compulsion and sanctions.”

At Piaget’s urging, it is integral that after a full day of formal education, children receive recreational time. During this phase of the school day, children learn at their own individual tempo, deepening their knowledge in their personal fields of interest, as well as further engaging with impressions and knowledge gained from school peers, lessons, clubs, and projects. We are confident that alongside the more formal educational of-fers of BMS, free time, in which students can exercise independent freedom of choice, is crucial. For these reasons, we not only offer students use of the CCEP grade level specific rooms, but also supervision of the school playground, where students can engage in sports, dialogue, and other interests.

The CCEP therefore sees recreational time, otherwise known as free play, as an important part of both perso-nal and sociocultural development. One of the central goals of our program is the promotion of self-esteem, confidence, and the growth and maturation of each student. It is our belief that such qualities are particularly encouraged through free play.

CCEP ORGANIZATIONClub FairAt the beginning of each academic year, the “Club Fair“ affords students and parents the opportunity to meet with each club instructor. At this time, students and parents can discuss each club and program in greater detail, ask questions, and obtain a general overview about all clubs on offer. In addition to live examples and presentations, this introduction will give students a more informed idea about instructional content, methods, and instructors. This ensures that students and parents make the most informed decision possible when selecting and registering for clubs. This year, the Club Fair will take place on September, 6th at 4.00pm - 5.30pm.

Club Selection Process A few days after the closing of the Club Exhibition, the selection process will begin via our online booking portal. Parents will receive a separate email with a website link to allow you to activate your account and make bookings. For this procedure, a login or password is not needed. When making your decision, please be aware that club selection is processed on a first-come, first serve-basis. While all clubs have a limited number of spots available, we work hard to ensure that all students’ receive at least their first or second choice. As a matter of principle, however, we cannot guarantee any student spots in specific clubs. Please bear in mind: - All students from grade 1 -2 have the opportunity to choose maximum 2 clubs per school year. - All students from grade 3 -6 have the opportunity to to choose maximum 3 clubs per school year. - Student schedules should be taken into consideration when choosing clubs. - Activities that involve extra fees are subject to separate agreements. - Please understand that registration can only be processed online and during the given time period. - Club selection is processed on a first come, first serve basis. - Although we cannot make any guarantees, we remain committed to trying our very best to register each

student for at least one of their club choices. - We are happy to answer any questions you may have via either telephone or email.

Vacation ProgramThe CCEP provides exciting programs with a wide range of activities during the summer, fall, midwinter, and Easter holiday breaks. In addition to providing supervision and open offers during the holidays, these pro-grams also offer a plethora of field trips, excursions, workshops, and various sports.


PARENTS SERVICES German Language Classes for ParentsThis is a German language course designed for BMS parents with limited to no previous knowledge of Ger-man. This will be a light and informal way for parents to learn some useful phrases, or to deepen their extant knowledge of German, while simultaneously meeting new people within the BMS school community. The primary focus of the course is to practice functional language skills that are useful for navigating everyday situations, in addition to a basic foundation in German grammar. You can find further information about this course in the club description section of this booklet.

CCEP Checkout SystemIn order to ensure the safety and welfare of BMS students, all students and parents are expected to check out at the end of the school day either in the CCEP Grade area or in the lobby. This also applies to CCEP offers that take place outside of school, such as Martial Arts. In this case, students will be returned to BMS in order to guarantee that they follow this practice. If parents do not pick up their children directly from the classroom, we kindly ask you to use the following check-out areas:Grade 1 & 2: Check-out at reception.Grade 3 & 4: Check-out area is located on the second floor.Grade 5 & 6: Check-out area is located on the third floor. - Primary School students who are permitted to check-out independently need to have signed permission

slip from parents. - Students without permission are not allowed to sign out or to leave campus. - Once a student is signed out, they have to leave the campus. - All students must be picked up by 6:00pm.

Procedures and Routines - Primary School students must spend their time exclusively in their respective CCEP Hort area, in the

CCEP Club, Library or on the playground. - Primary School students are not allowed to be unsupervised in the BMS building and/or to run around

in the hallways or staircases and must only use the main building entrance/exit (via Reception) for their own safety.

- In order to have an accurate overview concerning where Primary school students from Grade 1-4 are, each student will have their own personalized magnet which they have to use to navigate their choices during Hort time.

ScheduleThe clubs and projects of the Co-Curricula Educational Program begin just after 3:00pm and conclude at 6pm at the very latest. Any exceptions to this schedule will be announced and can be found in the program. General school supervision ends at 6pm.

Music SchoolsWe are offering instrumental music lessons at BMS through our partnership with the music schools “Neue Musikschule Berlin,” and the “Internationale Musikschule Berlin.” We provide rooms for this purpose to the best of our ability; however, school activities receive priority when it comes to room reservations. We ask that parents contact the music schools directly to arrange lessons and contracts. BMS does not have any influence on these matters.

PartnershipsALBA Berlin Originally BG Charlottenburg, the franchise ALBA Berlin was founded in 1991. Since their inception, the club has played in the German Basketball League (Bundesliga) and a number of different European tournaments on their way to fame. In 2012, they became recognized as the best basketball team in Germany. Now, with eight Bundesliga championship titles behind them, ALBA is one of the most successful German basketball franchises of all time. Additionally, with countless victories in various European competitions, ALBA is also re-cognized as one of the best basketball teams on the European international stage. In cooperation with coaches from ALBA Berlin, we will enhance and improve our Basketball offer and BMS now plays league games as ALBA-BMS Berlin. Berliner Yacht Club (BYC)Through this cooperation, we will offer our students the opportunity to learn how to sail. Following the com-pletion of the yearlong offer, students are expected to be able to pass an examination that tests their ability to independently steer and manuever a sailboat. By passing this examination, students receive their first sailing license. This offer is accompanied by additional costs and registration is coordinated directly through the BYC. Further information can be found in the club description of this offer contained in this booklet.

Berlinische GalerieThe Berlinische Galerie is one of the youngest museums of the German capital and houses art that ranges from 1870 until the contemporary moment. Distinguished collections of the Galerie comprise Dada Berlin, the „New Objectivity“ movement, and the East European Avantgarde. Other focuses of the permanent collection include art of a divided and reunited Berlin. Apart from the permanent collection, The Museum of Modern Art, Photography, and Architecture also offers a varied special exhibition program. In addition to an archive, library, and lecture rooms, there is furthermore an art school for children, youth, and adults contained within the Atelier Bunter Jakob. The Berlinische Galerie, in cooperation with the Youth in Museum organization, offers students of BMS a multifaceted program of holiday workshops. The main goals of these workshops are creative experimentation and the appreciation of art.

CHIMOSA – Martial ArtsThe concept of Chimosa unites the seemingly paradoxical notions of stillness and movement, traditional and modern, and the East and the West. Children and youth will be offered martial arts and sports courses that combine traditional Asian educational methods with Western scientific approaches. Teach Values – Strengthen PersonalityA holistic approach regarding martial arts – that is Woo!Zen, also for children and adolescents. The very inno-vative and unique concept was developed by CHIMOSA and rather represents a martial arts philosophy than a fix martial arts system, feeding on the input from various martial arts techniques. At CHIMOSA, kids and teenagers get to experience a diversified blend of traditional Asian training methods and Western scientific approaches. Alongside physical fitness, we specifically focus on a holistic personal development with an edu-cational impact. Apart from sports and self-defense, we also place value on attributes such as self-discipline, team spirit, perseverance, respect, patience, integrity, diligence and empathy. Personal qualities like these can significantly help children and adolescents to distinguish themselves from others in a positive way on their path towards adulthood. Teaching such values – embedded in a sporting context – makes for a perfect addition to their career, be it in school, job training, university or a profession. Paving the way for a successful future, teaching indispensable values and providing multifunctional tools such as change of perspective and problem-solving skills – CHIMOSA enables kids

ESMT The European School of Management and Technology in Berlin is among one of the best business schools in Germany, featuring one of the most internationally-minded business faculties. Its MBA students are actively engaging in community projects in Berlin. Each class is around 60 students from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds that join the program with a focus on innovation, technology, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Graduates of the program either start their own business or enter management leadership positions in various industries with some of the best companies in the world. This year, we will continue a pilot project with ESMT students that focuses on career advice and professional guidance. Further information about the club can be found in the project descriptions contained in this booklet.


HABAThe HABA digital work station is a creative educational and experiential space in the heart of Berlin. At HABA, children between the ages of five and fourteen years of age can playfully explore and develop important profi-ciencies in the field of new technology. The digital work station offers regular courses and special workshops by seasoned Media Educators and Trainers, under whom children can learn to program, build robots, use 3D printers, design animation films, and much more. Our goal is to inspire and equip children to be proactive and confident in the new digital world. At the digital work station, children will use computers, tablets, and applications as creative work mediums and will be supported and encouraged in the realization of their own imaginative ideas. HABA also offers workshops for adults, teachers, and others interested in bolstering their digital competency. Furthermore, HABA works together with schools in order to integrate digital projects tailo-red to specific learning goals and curricula. These cooperative times with BMS take place at the digital work station. Our varied courses and workshops are interactive and bilingual (German/English).

Instituto CervantesThe Spanish government founded the Insituto Cervantes in 1991 with the dual goals of promoting the Spanish language and acting as a cultural representative of Spanish and Latin-American countries globally. Since then, this non-profit, public foundation has established 77 institutes in over 41 countries worldwide. All teachers at the Instituto Cervantes Berlin are Spanish or Latin-American native-speakers. They possess a University teaching certificate and are experienced and specialized in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. The teachers take part in regular continuing education courses and utilize the most current teaching trends. All participants in the Spanish club will have access to the AVE Online course and receive a free Instituto Cervantes library pass. This CCEP offer includes additional costs. KidsBrainThe KidsBrain method develops children’s cognitive skills through practice of the Japanese Abacus, impro-ving mental arithmetic and problem solving in a fun and nurturing environment. Each KidsBrain class is a time devoted to playful and productive learning. At KidsBrain we use our proprietary teaching techniques to en-gage and motivate each student. These techniques include FlashCards, KidsFast, KidsGym and KidsWriting. The teachers at KidsBrain seek to encourage their students to draw on their innate abilities and skills, both emotional and analytical, to find new ways to solve problems. Outside class hours, KidsBrain provides support and guidance through its software and online platform. This includes specific software tutorials and online Practice Videos for each of the 8 levels. Each KidsBrain student is also provided with the official KidsBrain textbook and the KidsBrain 17-rod abacus. Together with the online platform, each KidsBrain students can therefore practice and learn independently. On the completion of each level, KidsBrain offers an examina-tion to each student, with successful students receiving a certificate of achievement. The KidsBrain method is designed to foster a love of mathematics in all its students. We believe that the confidence and curiosity developed through the KidsBrain programs will inspire a life-long desire to explore and excel in mathematics.

PalaisPopulair by Deutsche BankAccess to arts and culture and at the same time, cultivating creativity—that is the central ambition of the connections program from PalaisPopulaire. For every exhibition, we offer a tailored program for children, teen-agers, and families, which is dedicated not only to art but also to music, literature or sport. Under the direction of experts and experienced artists, we paint and draw, develop music and dance pieces, film movies, or get to know the city with sporty parkour. With our audio guides and activity cards, children and families can crea-tively discover artistic pieces. The program is centered on developing your own experiences and discoveries, honing your skills of perception, and becoming creative and artistic in your own right.

HORIZONTereignisHORIZONTereignis is a non profit organization, founded by two plantalogists together with a pedagogue in 2012. The goal of HORIZONTereignis is joint learning and experiences of natural science together with pre, primary and secondary school students as well as adults in a creative and well grounded way. Our teams always consist of an educated pedagogue and a scientist. The most important focus lies on fun, happiness and enthusiasm about natural science and experiments, exploring and research. Natural science topics will be connected to art, books, IT, culture and environment.

New ArrivalsStudents who arrive at BMS during the school year will choose extracurricular options in consultation with the CCEP Coordinator. The students, parents, and CCEP Coordinator will select the activities together based on availability.

Selection and Schedule of CCEP ProjectsThe projects will take place within the school year and the exact dates and times as well as the projects offered will be announced and be available via the online booking portal. We will send out more information shortly before registration opens.

New ArrivalsStudents who arrive at BMS during the school year will find extracurricular options in consultation with the CCEP Coordinator. The students, parents, and CCEP Coordinator will select the activities together based on availability.


GUIDELINES OF THE CCEPIt is our goal to fulfill each student’s first choice with regards to clubs, although this is not always logistically possible. In the event that a club is overbooked, a waiting list will be created. Registrations received prior to or after the designated online club registration period will not be given priority. Late registrations will be accepted and processed strictly based on the availability of the selected clubs. The clubs selection is processed on a first come, first serve basis. Students from grade 1 - 2 have the opportunity to choose a maximum of 2 clubs per school year. Students from grade 3 - 6 and Secondary School students have the opportunity to choose a maximum of 3 clubs per school year. It is not possible to switch clubs in the middle of the semester. At the beginning of the second semester, students will have the opportunity to choose some new club(s).

Each registered student commits to regular attendance in her or his chosen club(s). Each student will receive an online confirmation regarding her or his club(s). A minimum of eight participants is needed in order to form a club section. In some cases – due to collaboration with external partners – withdrawing from the club may either not be possible or may incur costs. Withdrawing from a club must be carried out in writing and in consultation with the CCEP Director.

Any absence from club activities requires a written excuse. External obligations that prevent participation in a club have to be communicated to the teacher in a timely manner. Two unexcused absences may result in student expulsion from the club and the spot being given to another student. Beginning in the third grade, students will be independently responsible for attending their clubs. The same rules that govern classroom behavior apply in all CCEP clubs. All students must adhere to the BMS Community Value Statement and Code of Conduct.

Please arrange pick-ups and instrumental music lessons directly with the music schools. All activities that take place outside of the school grounds, such as sailing, are associated with transport costs that must be covered by participants. Please be aware that times and locations as well as the content of clubs and projects are subject to change at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or collaboration with external partners. Although we try our best to preclude such changes, we thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter.

DESCRIPTION OF ELC ACTIVITIES

Art WorkshopsThe two workshops will consist of two different themes. The first workshop entitled Famous Artists will focus on studying the lives and works of famous artists. Children will be introduced to artists such as Giacometti, Dubuffet, and Kandinsky. They will be inspired to create works and use techniques based upon each artist they study. The second of the two sessions, entitled Fine Motor Skills, will focus on specific fine motor skill development and will consist of cutting, yarn-wrapping, string-tying, assembling, and decorating small objects. Both of the workshops will utilize materials and tools that are age appropriate. After a binding registration, the instructor will contact you in order to handle financial arrangements. Expenses include a one-time fee of €150 for the semester. CapoeiraCapoeira combines dance, music, acrobatics, and fighting in a playful way. Within this club, one can learn cool movements to perform in rhythm with Afro-Brazilian music. Capoeira is not only fun, but also improves endurance, balance, speed, and concentration. GymnasticsIn our gymnastic club, we will work and train in both groups and independently according to the particular ex-ercise. We will develop our abilities for movement through engagement with artistic gymnastics, which include events such as the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises. Some of the primary goals of the Gymnastics Club include increasing flexibility and cultivating skills such as balance and control. In this club, we will focus on building foundational technical and tactical skills, though having fun will remain our priority. ARTArt ClubThe Art Clubs designed for students in Grades 1-6 provide and further develop the foundational principles and skills of the fine arts through weekly instruction. The diverse offers conducted by a professional artist are age-appropriate and range from sculpture, various drawing and illustrating techniques, screen printing, interdisciplinary, mixed-media projects, and wood, ceramic, and mosaic workshops. Art Club not only allows children’s imagination to come alive, but also gives visual and kinesthetic learners valuable opportunities to express themselves. Modern DanceThe Modern Dance Club will learn and internalize the basic techniques of modern and contemporary dance. The primary goal of this club is to have fun in learning age-appropriate and increasingly more complex movement sequences, as well as developing choreography together that can then be perfomed. Students can involve their creative sides in developing choreography that expresses their own personality. Photography Club - Learning to see in frames.The Photography Club is intended for both beginners and more advanced students, and trains students in the basics of photography. It will provide answers to questions such as “How does a camera work? How do I set up composition and how can I create the perfect portrait?” Aside from thematic work, students will learn about studio photography, photo essays, about different genres of Photography, and how to tell a story with pictures. Students will also have the opportunity to play games in the “ ALBA School League” and meet professional players from the actual Bundesliga-Team. CheerleadingThis club is intended for students who are interested in cheerleading. AdvancedThis club is for students in their second or third “chess year” and refines their tactical and strategical thinking in order to prepare them for individual school chess events.

Parkour ClubParkour and Free Running are two related movement sports that locate their origin in France. Parkour athletes - borrowed from the French word „Le Traceur“ - move through urban areas in the fastest and most efficient way possible while negotiating obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing. On the other hand, Free Runners place more focus on acrobatic tricks and playful interaction with their environment. This club is suitable for Beginners and starts with the basic moves of both sports, such as the Parkour Roll and the Wall Run. As students further develop their skills, they will begin learning advanced moves such as various types of jumps and vaults, as well as more acrobatic moves such as the Backflip or a Palmspin. SailingThis club is intended for water sport lovers and students with or without experience in sailing. The goal of this club is for participants to acquire their junior sailing license and to participate in regattas on the Wannsee. Sailing is a cooperation coordinated by the renowned Berliner Yacht Club, which is located directly on the Wannsee in West Berlin. The sailing offer costs €500 per participant and this covers the actual training, use of boats, life preservers, and the transfer from S-Bahn Nikolassee to BYC. Potential participants must be able to swim and present a note of health from a doctor before being successfully enrolled. Please note that life preservers are provided by the BYC. Otherwise, it is important that each participant bring a change of clothes, something to drink, sunscreen, and a hat. Woo!Zen Grappling Suitable for: Children interested in wrestling/grappling, ground fightingOur Grappling class combines several grappling sports such as (Brazilian) Jiu Jitsu, Amateur wrestling and Judo. Regular practice and the skilled use of body positioning as well as various lever holds and strangleholds enable to win out over stronger and larger opponents – perfect self-defense training. Playful interaction that applies various roll and fall exercises during class, corresponds with the children’s natural play instinct. The training includes individual and partner exercises. Very ambitious kids may be able to take part in competi-tions.
