PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Another summer has come and gone and the Fall is upon us. The leaves are falling gently around us and the dogs seem to have more energy because of the falling temperatures.

Soon little white flakes will start to fall, oh, I think Alberta has already seen some! Strange weather we are having world wide, but that is another conversation.

I would be remiss if I did not tell everyone what a SUPER job Shannon & Jamie did this year at our National Specialty. Every thing went off without too much of a hitch, although I did receive some panic calls! Lol! But that is what I am there for to help where needed.

Thanks to Lerene Masterson & Janet Love for accompanying me out to the event and having a little bit of a holiday at the same time. I must admit, this Specialty was not packed with things to do and a little more enjoyable because of it. I still was exhausted at the end of the day though! Lol!

The caliber of dogs was amazing and I was happy to see some in action that I have not seen before. Hopefully you all will get to see some of the Baby Puppy shots, so darn cute! Congrats to all the winners and big thanks to all who participated and drove miles to get there and last but not least thanks to all the people who volunteered their time to assist with all those little things that need to be done.

I look forward to our next coming events: Our Booster held Sat Nov 29th in conjunction with the Caledon Kennel Show and also our 3rd Annual Santa Photos for Rescue Sat Nov 22nd at Global Pet Foods in Collingwood, courtesy Janet Love.

Enjoy this newsletter, Thanksgiving and remember to Hug those munchkins!

Cheers, Connie

Canadian Mastiff Club Health Testing Requirements The CMC prides itself on being proactive in regards to health. The club’s Code of Ethics requireall members submit the health testing results of both the bitch/stud dog (including outside services) before the breeding takes place. The results will be posted on the CMC website, and those members may then advertise at no charge on the Litter Announcement and Stud Dog pages. While health testing is only one tool used in evaluating the merit of a dog, we as a club want to show that it should be a standard part of any breeding program. With the up cropping of backyard breeders and the pressure extreme animal right activists are putting on the purebred fancy, we need to do all that we can to protect the breed.

All documentation can be e-mailed to [email protected] or sent by regular post to:Connie Hachey, 652 Solanum Way, RR #3, Millbrook, Ont., L0A 1G0. Feel free to include one picture of your mastiff for inclusion on your individual breeder page. Additional pictures may be sent for the Litter Announcement and/or Stud Dogs pages.

Bitches born before January 1, 2007 and dogs born before June 1, 2007 only require hips & elbows from an orthopedic registry, however, all other testing is welcome and encouraged.

Required for bitches born on or after January 1, 2007 and dogs born on or after June 1, 2007:1. A copy of the registration papers - not only to verify ownership and birth date, but also anytesting that might be available online with another registry.

2. Hips & Elbows - OFA, OVC &/or PennHip after the age of 18 months. The CMC encourages itsmembers to complete testing after 24 months of age. If the mastiff resides outside Canada/US, then the registry in the country of origin will be accepted. If the results are available on the OFA or OVC website, please provide a link. Pennhip results can be scanned or photocopied.

3. Cardiac - OFA certification or a cardiologist’s report. Testing must be done after 12 months of age. OFA certification can be done either by a practioner, specialist or a cardiologist. If the results are available on the OFA website, then only a copy of the mastiff’s registration papers is required.

4. CERF - board approval required for members unable to access a CERF approved vet to use an ophthalmologist exam. CERF exams need only be done once if done after 24 months of age. If the results are not available on the CERF or OFA website, then please send in a copy of the results.

5. PRA DNA - either the test results or through parentage. The onus is on the breeder to provideevidence of by parentage - this mean that somewhere down the line ancestors must have been tested on all sides. The CMC recommends that testing be done every 3-4 generations. PRA DNA testing can be obtained from Optigen. If the results are not available on the OFA – please send in copies.

6. Cystinuria - a basic urinalysis or a nitroprusside test. A urinalysis can be done at your vet’s and a letter from the same verifying the absence or presence of cystine in the sample is adequate. A nitroprusside test can be done through PennGen Laboratories. Please submit a scanned copy or photocopy.

Links to all of the above tests can be found on the Testing Requirements Pageon the CMC website.

Any additional testing is welcome.

Thank you for all your support and commitment to the breed!CMC Executive

It was hot... Africa hot. And here I thought I was escaping the clutches of the sweltering heat of Ontario by heading to BC for the Specialty in July. Connie Hachey, Janet Love & I started our journey on the Thursday before the weekend, doing an overnight stay at a hotel near the airport

While there can only be one BISS winner, ALL the Mastiffs that were there were all winners in my eyes. Their owners and breeders should be very proud. Thanks to everyone for a great time. I’m glad I made the trip out west, even if I ended up with swollen ankles and a burnt forehead.

The Bev Molloy Perpetual Trophy for Best of Opposite Sex

At this year’s Specialty we are proud to bestow a new Perpetual Trophy in honour ofBev Molloy in recognition of 30 years of service and dedication to the

Canadian Mastiff Club and the Mastiff breed.

Bev had a vision for the Mastiff breed in Canada. She was a Founding Member and pioneered the early years of the Club, maintaining a position on the Executive for most of her 30 years involved. 2014 marks her official retirement from the CMC.Bev was first introduced to the Mastiff breed in 1978, the year she married her husband, Pat. They had two mastiffs and two children, and over the next few years their interest in the breed grew. She personally knew many of the mentors of our great breed, such as Norman Howard Carp-Gordon, Marie Moore, Hyacinth Mellish, and in 1997 dedicated a Perpetual trophy to the CMC in honour of Betty Isserstedt. In 1983 Bev formed a group with other like-minded Mastiff fanciers to develop the CanadianMastiff Club. Bev was voted in as the first President of the CMC and developed the first Code of Ethics, Constitution and Bylaws. The CMC was officially recognised by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1985. The first CMC Booster was held in Toronto, and many educational fun matches were held at her residence over the years.

Page 30: CMC Fall Newsletter 2014

Bev is passionate about holistic and naturally raised dogs, Breed Specific Legislation, and any activity that can involve a Mastiff. She and her dogs have participated in Carting, Obedience, Rally, Public Education displays, and have earned Canadian, American, Mexican, International and UKC Championships. She teaches Rally and is accredited to adjudicate CGN , Carting and Junior Handling. She has judged CMC Sweepstakes and MCOA Breeder’s Cup, and is also a Reiki Master and Bach Flower Essences Practitioner.

“Maggie” BOSS Ch Banda N’ Cluny’s Maggie Muggins, CGN, DD, RN

During her 30 years with the CMC, Bev has “gone to bat” for the Club on many occasions. She has been President for 10 years and served on the Executive in some other capacity nearly all of the other 20 years. She has been a member of, or has chaired almost every Club Committee. She has corresponded with the CKC on behalf of the Club in many instances, and appeared in person to represent our perspective where necessary. She also liaised with the CKC on many issues such as the definition of a breeder, re-allocation of the point system, the splitting of group 3, the accepted colours for Mastiffs, and identifying the most prevalent diseases in the Breed.

Since the beginning, Bev has always been there for the dogs, and is still an ardent supporter ofMastiff Rescue. One of her most proud Club moments was the SPCA raid of Waltie and Bill Pieper and Wynmast Kennels. Former Club President Waltie Pieper was impeached by the CMC for embezzling Club funds and ignoring Club Bylaws, yet in spite of this and numerous complaints of their breeding practices, the CMC was suspended pending an investigation. Through Bev’s investigative research, many phone calls and letters, and persistence while doing things “by the book”, Waltie was exposed from hiding behind her “friends in high places”. Following a complete CKC investigation, the Club was fully exonerated, and the result was the rescue of 49 Mastiffs in BC.

We wish Bev and her family all the best in her future endeavors, and remain assured that she willalways be here for the dogs! For a more complete account of Bev’s contributions, look for thearticle that will be featured in the 2014 augmentation to the CMC Anniversary Edition. Also visit Bev at her website: http://www.bandamastiffs.ca/AboutUs.htmlRespectfully submitted by Shannon Low

Look what I got in the mail today!!!!!

In Aug of last year, I advised the Canadian Mastiff Club (CMC) that I was retiring at the end of 2013. It was decided that a perpetual trophy was going to be dedicated to me at this years National Specialty in Surrey,

B.C. in July. There was also a very nice write up in the Specialty catalogue. (This is a copy of that perpetual trophy/plaque.) Connie kindly brought back the plaque and catalogue for me.

I was a founding member of the CMC; President for 10 years; on the Executive for nearly every year of the other 20 years; developed the first Code of Ethics, Constitution and By-Laws; chaired nearly every committee going

and/or served on the committee; developed Canada’s first rescue system and have been involved for ALL of my 30 years; liaised with the Canadian Kennel Club on a number of issues that affected Mastiffs in Canada; and I

was instrumental in guiding the CMC through one of the rockiest periods in its history, which culminated in the rescue of 49 Mastiffs.

In 2008, I became an Honourary member of the MCOA, Canadian Kennel Club and the CMC by virtue of having been a member for 25 years straight. I decided to remain an active member and paid dues every year. In those 5 years I was Secty/Treas and V-P. I chaired many committees, including Honour Roll, BSL, CKC Liaison, and Health. I supplied most of the information for the Club’s 25th Anniversary Edition and contacted dozens of

old members to get photos of their dogs. And I also either co-chaired or or assisted with the 2013, 2011 and 2009 Specialties.

And even now, although “officially” retired, I am finishing up 2 more updated years for the Anniversary Edition.

So many accomplishments and so many great memories! But I have to admit that I am immensely happy moving on to this new phase in my life.

I want to thank some very special people who were instrumental in having my 30 years of dedication recognized. Steve Smith, Jamie Morris of Cedarhollow Mastiffs, and Pam Osborn. And of course, Shannon Low, who I have

worked with for 20 years now! My heartfelt thanks!

Thank you ladies!

Yours,Bev

Minutes of CMC Meeting of June 08, 2014Attendance:Connie Hachey, Jamie Morris, Lori Whitaker, Jennifer Lee, Lerene Masterson, Taru Korrensuo, Pam Osborn, Gary Osborn, Shannon Low, Jane Mitchell, Caleya Davie, Rebecca Carr

Consideration of Agenda:No changes.

Minutes of March Meeting:Motion to accept by Taru, second by Shannon. Ayes: Jane, Jennifer.

Previous Executive MotionsShannon motioned to buy a memory stick for CMC files to be stored from Bev Molloy. Seconded Jennifer. Ayes Taru, Jane, Linda. Motion passed.

Shannon motioned to repay Connie 50.00 for credit card payment of gift for auditor for doing CMC books. Seconded Jennifer. Ayes, Taru, Caleya, Linda, Jane. Motion passed.

Shannon motioned to move CMC website maintenance and setting up of PayPal on site to Becky Carr & Rob Stevens. Seconded Jane. Ayes Taru, Caleya, Jennifer. Motion passed.

Secretary/Treasurer ReportThe books are in from the auditor and everything looks good! I am figuring out the “system” as it is slightly different from the system we use at home, but not horribly so. *grin*Thank You cards have been done up & sent off to the people who made rescue/BSL donations, and the Longevity/Honour Roll certificates will be going out shortly as well.Things have been pretty nuts around here since we had a litter of puppies right after the AGM – by this time next week we will be down to only two, and life should take on a modicum of sanity once again. :)Our account balance bank is currently sitting at: $ 17,311.18$3264.84 was deposited to RescueConnie Hachey was repaid $81.55 for outstanding bills. Our PayPal account is up & running!Caleya Davie

Specialty ReportThe Premium List is finished and the website is in the process of being updated. The CKC paperwork for judges is in hand, perpetual keeper plaques are done, rosettes are currently being made, Club Perpetual trophies have been updated and engraved, the Banquet is booked, and Specialty prizes are on order. We are seeking sponsorship for the various classes, and Raffle donations are needed. Plan on submitting a Catalogue ad for your latest great win or beloved veteran.

Some of the perpetual plaques that are held by the Club for display and use in Specialty photos are reaching their limit of engraved plates. Presumably the Eastern collection will also have some plaques in need of replacing. Given that adding to a plaque is not practical for storage and transport, not to mention cost, I propose that Additional plaques in a SIMILAR STYLE (if exact is not available) be purchased and engraved with the same information on the top plate in order to continue the list of winners. In most cases, this will extend the “life” for another 20 years or so.

In the case of a trophy that is unique, such as the Puppy Sweepstakes plaque which has a crest shape that has an image engraved into the wood, I propose we have plaques created that bear resemblance to the original trophy, by us-ing similar types of wood / materials, same colour engraving plates, and where possible, use an embellishment that ties the new plaque and its original trophy in some visual way. Example; the original trophy may have been a cup that had maple leaf “conchos” on it, so the new plaque could have maple leaf “conchos” on it as well. This can be handled by the Committee, but since there will be about 3 or 4 plaques for both East and West needed in the next year or two, there will be notable cost involved. President’s ReportHas been a quiet time with the Club, which is perhaps a good thing? Working on gathering Class Sponsorships and Raffle items for Specialty. Looking forward to attending this year’s Specialty out west.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Jaylyn Ettinger for all her assistance with the Club’s website for all these years. She has handed the reins over to Becky Carr & Rob Stevens who are working at getting some new additions to the website to make it work better for us.

Looking forward to a great summer.

Respectfully submitted by, Connie

Anniversary Publication I have received the 2011 addition for the issue from Bev, looking at getting it formatted and printed and ready to offer for sale at 7.00 an issue, which should include shipping.

Submitted byConnie *Connie has sold two editions in the past month to Holland & Australia.*Has asked Jamie if she would be willing to format the 2011 addition.

Newsletter- Connie Hachey & Jamie MorrisOur newsletter has been delayed by the MCOA Specialty, some of my contributors were away at it.

Jamie & I have been chatting and she has suggested looking into an amendment to our By Laws, to adjust our newsletters to twice a year and 2 Bulletins twice a year.

It is something we shud look into, as I am not getting people offering to assist with this job and truthfully, the few people that do assist with stuff in the Club are getting burnt out very quickly.

The Bulletins will offer the minutes of meetings, any new titles, Events, and important Club business, the newsletters, shall have the news stories, fun items etc.

Respectfully submitted by,Connie*Will have to look at amending by-laws – Connie will investigate further.

Honor Roll Report- Jane MitchellCertificates are ready for signature and mailing out. We are looking at budgeting 100.00 for all mailings, postage and envelopes. *Connie sent Jane 2 nominations

CKC Report- Caleya Davie Save the Date! RDOG Day is Sept 20, 2014.Join us on Saturday, September 20, 2014 for the seventh national RDOG Day—a CKC initiative that serves to promote responsible dog ownership through education and support, while recognizing the positive contribution that canines make to our society.http://www.ckc.ca/Raising-My-Dog/Responsible-Ownership/RDOGMixed-Breed and Unrecognized-Breed Dogs to Compete in CKC Performance EventsIn a move that will broaden its scope and inclusiveness, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is pleased to announce that, as of July 1, 2014, mixed-breed and unrecognized-breed dogs (purebred from CKC recognized registries) will be able to compete in CKC Agility, Obedience and Rally Obedience Trials alongside purebred dogs and receive the same titles. This new Canine Companion program will complement our diverse range of CKC purebred-focused dog events and will reinforce our mission to speak for all dogs. The program will also help the CKC to remain competitive with other event-giving organizations such as the North American Mixed Breed Registry, Agility Association of Canada and Canadian Association of Rally Obedience. The CKC is excited to follow in the footsteps of organizations such as the AKC who have already opened up competition to mixed-breed dogs, with great success. In order to enjoy the thrill of competing in CKC trials, mixed-breed and unrecognized-breed dog owners must apply for a Canine Companion Number (CCN) and meet specific criteria as set out in the Canine Companion Club Policy. Applications for a CCN number can be submitted to CKC prior to July 1st.For more information, please contact our Member Services team Department at 416-674-3699 or 1-855-DOGS CKC (1-855-364-7252) or [email protected] Restrictions for Pet TravellersFlying with your dog this summer? Then here are some dog-specific travel options to keep in mind:We are pleased to report that WestJet accepts pets as checked baggage during the summer, with the exception of select locations from May 1 to October 31. WestJet Cargo planes are temperature controlled and can transport pets during the warmer months on domestic flights only. For more information, including details about shipping dogs, please call WestJet at 1 (800) 581-9499 or WestJet Cargo at 1 (866) 952-2746.Due to potentially high temperatures on the ground, Air Canada and Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz are not able to transport pets as checked baggage from June 20 to September 10, 2014.However, Air Canada Cargo is specially equipped for the transportation of animals during the summer months and will accept pets during this period with the exception of select cities. Importantly, at any time when the temperature is over 29.5 °C, Air Canada Cargo may not be able to accommodate animals. For further details, including information on shipping dogs, please call 1 (866) 615-1155 or contact your local Air Canada Cargo office. As always, we encourage CKC members to review country-specific regulations re: restrictions on the entry of animals and vaccination and documentation requirements, prior to booking.

Health Committee- We are looking for someone to Chair this committee. I do feel this is an important committee to keep going as health issues and discoveries are popping up all the time and as responsible Mastiff owners we need to keep abreast of this. Anyone interested in taking this on?Submitted byConnie*No volunteers. Connie mentioned we need to look at the committees closer. Keep an eye out for the newsletter!

Rob can do a custom program to do all we need do and just get rid of yahoo. To be discussed at a later date.

New BusinessNew item for Breeder Membership Incentive.*Connie will look into the cost of a custom drawing by Ana Bodin for the Breeder of the Year, and will come back to the Executive for a motion with prices/options.

Newsletter changes* As per Jamie, there would be the same number of publications but 2 would be simple and 2 would be more intensive with articles, ads, etc.2 would be called Bulletins (b/w with minutes, etc) and 2 would be what we are used to.*Becky suggested we make the newsletter avalible to members using the members online section of the website which will open in the future.

Breed Standard * Since most of the committe will be on hand at the specialty, Shannon would like to meet and discuss a few of the committees in person to make some headway. She suggests each committee chair prep some material with handouts or whatever to hack out some business (breed standard, honour roll, COE, etc.)

While attending a Pat Hastings Seminar at the MCOA Specialty in Denver, it was suggested that Dog Clubs may wish to purchase copies of a new children’s book (Dr. Suess) that “promotes a positive journey in the world of the purebred dog”. As a club we can purchase the books for $6 USD each and distribute them to young hopefuls. The link below offers more detail.http://www.naiaonline.org/articles/article/order-if-i-ran-the-dog-show-for-your-dog-clubI would like to bring the offer to the attention of the CMC and move that the purchase of 50 books be brought up for discussion with a decision on whether or not to proceed be made by the next Executive meeting.* Discussed, Jamie will bring a copy of her book to the Specialty for all to have a look at so a decision can be made. Discussion centered on use of book for breed booths, possible inclusion in our Gift Shop, friends with kids & dogs, etc.

Specialty ReportSponsorships have been filled, thanks everybody!! We do not have the entry breakdown yet, but numbers are lower this year. The PKC has graciously offered to give us free Ring space in the RV area in exchange for our help with the RV parking. Last call for catalog ads, catalog orders and Banquet tickets. Raffle donations are always welcome! If anyone would like to help out by sitting in the Raffle booth for a bit so our volunteers can get in a bathroom break or a coffee, sure would be appreciated. *Connie will take any last minute raffle donations out with her if they are received before she flies on July 25.

Trophy ReportThe Best of Opposite Sex trophy in honour of Bev Molloy is in the works. We are hoping to be able to present this at the specialty. As soon as a quote is offered I will post for voting approval. The trophy will be done in a similar fashion as the Winners Bitch trophy with a sublimated dog photo, and will replace the full plaque formerly used for BOS. The old plaque will also be on display at all CMC Specialties. “The” Trophy will consist of two (one each East/West) plus a “keeper” plaque to be presented to Bev for all her years of service to the Club.- Shannon Low*Connie will take the perpetual trophy & Bev’s keeper plaque back to Ontario with her to avoid shipping costs

President’s ReportStill looking for donations for the Raffle at the Specialty. Please let us know if you have something you need to get out there, so we can make sure it is posted on the CMC website.I got an invite for the Club to attend a Charity event in Bowmanville, Ontario for Nova’s Ark, which is a farm where they help disabled and under privileged children deal with life thru animals.Unfortunately, it is the same weekend as the Specialty, however I told them I would forward it and post on our FB page and my own page. So if anyone feels like attending, that is not going to be out west, please do. It sounds like lots of fun for all and of course a great cause.

Otherwise been pretty quiet.

We need to keep on this until that is done. Discussion around getting the website accessible so that more than one person can access it, and frustration over requested updates only being partially done.

Membership – Linda Pike ChairI have been in contact with Ana Bodin and she will be participating in our Breeder Membership Incentive. Just to remind everyone, all Breeder members are encouraged to enroll their puppy owners into the CMC. They do this when puppies are going to their forever homes and the Breeder gets the owner to sign the membership form and then the Breeder submits the forms with the fee at ½ price.

Next year, the Breeder with the most puppy owners renewing at their own cost, will be awarded the personalized drawing from Ana Bodin. This program not only benefits the owners, as they have a source of great information at their fingertips but also the CMC gets to have new blood into the Club. This is very important, as we need new members to keep our Club going and to generate new ideas and get involved.

could be yours!

CONTEST FOR PET OWNERSEach emmber who refers another person to the Club which results in a new member-ship will be entered into this contest. Every referral by one of our members gets an

entry into a draw After each quarter a draw will be made and the prize will be some-thing from Ways& Means.

CONTEST FOR BREEDERSBreeder members will be encouraging their puppy buyers to join the Club. For any

breeders having litters where the pups are sold during 2013 the member can sign up their buyers to join the CMC for $10.00. This will be at the breeders cost for this year.

So if a breeder has a litter of 6 pups and 5 are sold the breeder will extend membership to their 5 buyers. Buyer will sign the COE, fill out the membership form,

and the breeder will will submit the funds. The winner of the contest will be deter-mined by whoever has the highest % of buyers who renew

their membership of their own accord for the following year - 2014.

As an example: breeder A has one litter of 7 pups in 2013 and enrolls 6 puppy owners in the program, and breeder B has 2 litters of 16 pups total and enrolls 14 new puppy owners. At renewal time A gets 5 out of 6 renewals and

B gets 8 out of 14.

The % would be calculated as follows: A 5/6 = 83%; B 8/14 = 57%. Breeder A wins!

Congratulations to Jane Mitchell for winning the

Winter Membership Incentive!
