LEED Platinum• LEED: Leadership in Energy &
Environmental Design Green BuildingRating System
• This system is an internationallyrecognized green building certificationsystem that ensures a building or
community was designed and built withthese environmental metrics in mind:
• Americans are the only people who usefresh drinking water to flush away waste.
• Instead of using 2.4 gallons of drinking
water, these toilets use only 1.3 gallons.
• The urinals are exactly as the nameimplies, there is no water.

• Any weakness in a buildings’ insulation
will allow for heat to escape. Windowsallow for this to happen even easier than
walls do.• Triple Pane windows will greatly reduce
heat loss in the winter and will keep heatoutside better in the summer.
• An R value is used to measure thestrength of the walls’ or windows’ thermal
resistance. The higher the R value thebetter the buildings’ energy efficiency will
be.
• The thermal envelope of Bosarge Centeris over 16” thick with the R value of 40.
The R value of the roof is 60.

• CFL: Compact Fluorescent Lights useless than 75% energy, will last 10 timeslonger, and are safer to use as they
produce less heat. They also cut homecooling costs.
• With sun shining into the house the lightswill dim or shut off on their own.
• At night time they will come on whensomeone enters a room and will shut offautomatically when that person leaves.

Cycling
This term is used to describe any systemthat acts as a net to capture and holdrainfall.
Collecting rainwater directly as opposedto indirectly saves energy in filtering andtransportation.
That’s why theBosarge EducationCenter has decidedto use collected rainwater to flush theirtoilets.

Regular heating systems push usedwarm air out and draw in cool fresh airthat has to be warmed.
This system transfers the heat fromalready used and stale air to the freshincoming air.
Less energy is used because the heater
doesn’t have to warm the air again.

The materials used to build the BosargeCenter are all recycled as were thematerials that were left over from
construction.Placed around the Bosarge Center foryour convenience are recycling bins todispose of accumulated waste.

SWH: Solar Water Heating system
This system is designed to deliver themaximum amount of water year round.
In order to heat water a collection tank isattached to the roof or a wall that gets alot of sunlight.
No pumping is required as the heated
water rises naturally to the top of thetank. When using a pumped system, thetank is located at ground level and theheated water is pumped from the tank tothe building.
