Power Type : Expert• Main objective : Keep all students on task.• Solution : Switching roles among group members .Everyone has a chance to experience various roles

in the group.Explain to student that there must be no

domination or passiveness of members in a group.Rationalize the advantages of group work to the

students.

Power type: Expert

• MAIN OBJECTIVE: KEEP THE PUPILS FOCUS WITH THE T&L SESSION.

• SOLUTION: Give task that will keep him focus.Distract them with information or knowledge

that might keep them interested.For eg: if the child misbehave when you are

teaching, you might want to change your activity into something more fun. (video, pictures, etc)

Legitimate : Appointed position

Advantage Disadvantage

• Students cannot question the role of the teacher due to the position or authority given.

•Exist by default, not so much earned or cultivated.

•Thus, as teachers, we can either do better or worst by projecting our role and that we deserve to have that power.

• The authority given by the teacher is clear-cut.

Eg: Discipline master can discipline the students , if they are found guilty, as he/she is given the authority and responsibility to do so.

•Respect earned from students is sometimes not genuine.

Power to RewardAdvantage Disadvantage

•Student feel valued and are appreciated when their efforts are acknowledged.

•Emphasize more on extrinsic motivation rather than intrinsic motivation.

•Help in behavior modification . •The reward must be valuable to the students only will the power works.

•Provides positive reinforcement will motivate the students to continue their favorable attitude.

•Only useful in primary level.

Coercive : Power to PunishAdvantage Disadvantage

•Important to draw lines and boundary. •Emphasize extrinsic over intrinsic motivation. (Negative way)

•Problem is repress , not solve.

•Promote a sense of security to students who don’t intend to cross lines and count on teachers to discipline them who do.

•Punitives effort results in negative responses. (makes matter worse)

•Damages ones’ self-esteem.

Referent: Relationship powerADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Build interpersonal relationship between the teacher and the learners.

Might not be applicable in the primary school as in reality because the pupils are not mature enough to understand the teacher’s intention.

Enhance effective communication skills – 2-way communication during Teaching & Learning process.

Might not be effective if the teacher is too friendly and the pupils might go overboard.

The teacher will be able to create a condusive classroom.

The learners will be more interested and excited during the T&L.

The T&L sessions might be dull because the teacher concentrate more on the content.

Build trustworthiness and understanding between the teacher and learners.

The student might not be independent in their learning.

• Pupil A accidentally spilt some water over Pupil B’s exercise book.

• Pupil B then slap Pupil A and they got into a fight.
