chair’s report

Chair’s reportClyde Shopmobility has been a great achievement for all. We now deliver a service in Clydebank, Alexandria and Dumbarton. We did not expect to expand so quickly, so opening our service in Dumbarton shows our commitment and success.

Our group faced many hurdles which we overcame. Thank you to the dedication of the Committee members getting it up and off the ground.

Volunteers are a very important part of Clyde Shopmobility and we are very grateful for their support.

Our sighted guide service usage remains low however it is an important service to many.

Feedback from all service users has been great. Many describe the service as ‘giving them their independence back’.

We thank all of our partners and look forward to many years of success.

“The demand for our service, together with West Dunbartonshire’s ageing population and the Government’s ongoing welfare reforms, all demonstrate an overwhelming need to support the excellent work we do to enable all people, including those who are disabled and/or elderly to live sustained, independent lives.”

co-ordinators’ report

Clyde Shopmobilitymission statement

It gives us great pleasure to introduce this Progress Report for 2014. The content of this report demonstrates how Clyde Shopmobility really makes a difference to the lives of a broad range of people with mobility and access problems. In accordance with the charity’s aim, we enable membersof our communtity to live more independently and to avoid feeling isolated and dependent on others.

The charity is busy and thriving. Although the expansion this year to introduce a pilot in Alexandria has presented some challenges, we have learned from these, and taking into account our findings, looked to reshape our services more appropriately.

Volunteers supported by a small team of paid workers, have again been at the forefront of delivering our services. We would like to thank the Committee, all the staff and our many volunteers for their hard work and dedication and for responding to demand for our help from disabled, vulnerable and elderly people in the community.

We are grateful to all funders who have enabled us to sustain the level of service that our customers and clients expect from us. A review of the service and business plan to identify priorities which can be achieved is currently underway. The demand for our service, together with West Dunbartonshire’s ageing population and the Government’s ongoing welfare reforms, all demonstrate an overwhelming need to support the excellent work we do to enable all people, including those who are disabled and/or elderly to live sustained, independent lives.

Bobby Jones and Kate Coleman Clyde Shopmobility Co-ordinators

Clyde Shopmobility aims to provide residents of West Dunbartonshire who have a mobility or sensory impairment problem, with access to high quality services that enhance health and lifestyle, utilising mobility equipment and support personnel, facilitating improved access to shops businesses and a range of services including local amenities.

“It helps me get around with the family without stopping every two minutes.”

“Gives me freedom and lets me communicate with others by letting me go out.”

I am delighted to endorse the Clyde Shopmobility Progress Report. The superb achievements made over the years are a testament to the hard work of the volunteers, workers and committee. Clyde Shopmobility deliver an essential service across all of West Dunbartonshire, supporting many of our most vulnerable residents. The services on offer from organisations and charities such as Clyde Shopmobility contribute greatly to the strategic aims of West Dunbartonshire Council – in particular our desire to improve care and promote independence for older people alongside improving the wellbeing of communities and protecting the welfare of vulnerable people.

Clyde Shopmobility has gone from strength to strength since its inception and I am delighted to see how ambitious the committee and volunteers are in developing the services on offer further in future years.

Councillor Martin RooneyLeader of the Council

Clyde Shopmobility is a charity who aims to enable people to access shops, cafes, services and just generally get out of the house and be part of the community. This is vital in maintaining people’s independence and helping them to stay in their own homes, living a good standard of life, for longer.

We achieve this through working in partnership, to provide a range of mobility equipment from manual wheelchairs to motorised scooters. We also provide a ‘sighted guide’ service to assist people with visual impairment get around safely.

Increased mobility allows social integration, which is a major factor in the quality of life for many disabled and older people. Being out in the community and meeting friends enhances healthier lifestyles both emotionally and mentally.

The need for this service in West Dunbartonshire is underlined by the projections of age related mobility. Given the changes in life expectancy and client group population growth (the number of people over 65 in Scotland is projected to increase by 63% by 2028), our client group will benefit from a service that will focus more on independent and healthy living in the community. So as well as catering for those with a disability or injury, we will have an increased demand for services like this to support those with age related mobility problems.

Thanks to the commitment of our voluntary committee members, our volunteers, the support of West Dunbartonshire Council, West Dunbartonshire Community Planning Partnership and the Clyde Shopping Centre, we were able to become operational from 1 August 2011.

Since then we have provided the opportunity for over 5,000 journeys, giving our customers freedom of access and independence.

We presently provide the service in Clydebank, Alexandria and Dumbarton.

With continued support, we will be able to deliver the best community service possible.

“It helps me get around without constant pain and it takes a lot of stress off me.”

Clyde Shopmobility recognises that to deliver its strategic aims, objectives and priorities successfully, it needs sound governance arrangements in place. The company is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association under the Companies Act 2006. The management of the company is the responsibility of the trustees who are elected under the terms of the Articles of Association.

Our governance framework sets out the roles, responsibilities and procedures for the effective and efficient conduct of our service. The Board of Trustees hold regular meetings to review all aspects of the operation of the charity. The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable company law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

The framework below illustrates our organisation’s structure but this will only be fully realised through how we, as individuals and as a group, play our part in a corporate and partnership context. The company enjoys charitable status for taxation purposes. The Scottish Charity Number is SC034635. The full governance documents are available for inspection.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

Clyde Shopmobility, West Dunbartonshire Council and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park have been working together to establish a ‘Park Mobility Project’ offering services covering the whole of West Dunbartonshire. With advice and support from Forth and Tay Disabled Ramblers, they have already provided two guided tours on scooters in Balloch and surrounding areas.

The ‘Scoot to Carrick’ started at the Visit Scotland Tourist Information Centre in Balloch, travelled through Cameron House to Carrick grounds where members enjoyed a picnic and then returned to the starting point at Balloch.

The ‘Scoot to Carrick’ was part-led by Cameron House’s ranger James Elliot who has a wealth of knowledge of the area.

The ‘Scoot Round Balloch’ was held as part of the ‘Great Outdoor Event’ where members joined Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, West Dunbartonshire Council’s Countryside Ranger, staff and volunteers from Clyde Shopmobility on a guided ‘walk on wheels’ around Balloch Park.

Inspirational Walks

We have been working in partnership with Levengrove and Dalmuir Park Inspirational Walks Projects which provides individuals and community groups access to the park. Clyde Shopmobility provides both training and scooters to ensure anyone with a mobility issue has access. The walks provide a 40 minute guided walk highlighting points of interest describing the Park’s history and some notable unique features, whilst providing a therapeutic advantage to those who attend by way of exercise.

Our services and activities mainly include providing access to mobility equipment and sighted guides to those in our community who may for a variety of reasons be stuck at home or struggle to get out and about.

Our aims and objectives include expanding this service to run in close and monitored co-ordination with other services which also improve the lives of people in our community who are most vulnerable and least independent. We aim to be an integral part of a seamless set of service provision which simplifies the support pathways of people with a disability, and older people with age related mobility problems who want to lead more independent and active lives.

Clyde Shopmobility aims to provide residents and visitors to West Dunbartonshire who have a mobility or sensory impairment problem access to high quality services that enhance health and lifestyle, utilising mobility equipment and support personnel, facilitating improved access to facilities in and around West Dunbartonshire.

Since 2013 we have been working very successfully with partners to “improve equality of access” ensuring many of our members can use the facilities of our National Park and West Dunbartonshire Council’s Public Parks.

Action on Hearing Loss

We work with Action on Hearing Loss. They are experts in providing support for people with hearing loss and tinnitus. They provide day-to-day care for people who are deaf and have additional needs, also practical advice to help people protect their hearing. Action on Hearing Loss provides a service from our Clydebank premises on 3 days per month.

“It has given me freedom and I now feel I’m not holding anyone back as I can move at the same pace.”

Clyde Shopping Centre

The Clyde Shopping Centre team have also played an integral part in our success at Clydebank.

We thank them for donations received, the support of the security team for our customers, assisting with fund raising and promotion days and for providing signage and advertising space on the electronic displays. This has all helped in the development of our service to customers.

Community Learning and Development

Community Planning is about organisations and communities working together to plan services which truly meet the needs of their users. This also requires that the governing committees and boards of charities who contribute to shared objectives are fit for purpose. CLD have supported the management committee of Clyde Shopmobility with development and capacity building issues relating to governance, planning, logistics, and delivering services. We will continue to work with the team at CLD.

WDCVS

We have worked in partnership with WDCVS in West Dunbartonshire at all stages of our development. They have provided a range of advice, support and specialist services to help make us more effective, this has included high quality learning and development opportunities, policy development and a volunteer referral system. We continue to work in partnership to achieve shared objectives for communities in West Dunbartonshire.

looking forward

Expanding the Service

We look forward to expanding and developing our service across West Dunbartonshire.

Additionally, working in partnership with existing providers, we will expand our capacity in each location to deliver and support a wider range of services.

New projects in

Partnership

We will continue to work in partnership to deliver investment area outcomes such as working with those who are disabled or who have a long term illness, less able to cope and could be better socially connected to their communities. We will work with older people who have age related mobility problems, to assist them live at home longer and have better social connections and relationships.

“Opened up my local amenities for me. I can now use the library and meander along

the cycle path.”

Change Service

The focus of our service will also be adapted to suit the diverse demand in West Dunbartonshire. It may be that demand for shopping services may be higher in Clydebank than in Alexandria. Whereas demand for the freedom to scoot round some of the most beautiful countryside in the world may be more attractive to our customers from Alexandria.

We are constantly monitoring usage and demand and will becustomising our service to suit. We aim to provide more outreach services, for example equipment based at a variety of venues throughout our community which can be accessed and used by those in most need.

Celebrating opening of new premises in Alexandria

“Clyde Shopmobility is a godsend. It now means I can shop on my own without relying on someone else.”

“More mobility while shopping, more independence in moving about and less reliability on my carer.”

“I have been able to go to shops that were otherwise out of reach.”

acknowledgements

There are many people and organisations who have assisted and supported Clyde Shopmobility to be where it is today, as an important and valued service to our community.

West Dunbartonshire Council are our main funders. With their support we have been able to effectively deliver our core service since August 2011. We hope to continue working in partnership with the Council to deliver services.

We are also grateful for the support of many departments within the Council, for example -

The Roads Department have provided signage and additional disabled parking bays. The Community Payback Team have provided fantastic support with the upkeep and appearance

of our premises. Community Learning and Development have supported the management committee and helped us develop. Also thanks to the Community Planning Team who have helped us keep on track and provided additional resources for support. We are also grateful to the Employability Team and the Estates Team. Also a big thank you to all elected members of West Dunbartonshire Council who support the vision of what our project aspires to.

We would like to express our gratitude to the people at the Care and Repair project in Dumbarton for assisting with tasks that required professional expertise. Their help has been invaluable.

From day one of opening we were offered assistance by WDCVS. This was, and continues to be,a tremendous support for the project in policy development and referral systems. We are presently working together with WDCVS and the West Dunbartonshire Carers Centre to contribute to the development of new and exciting projects.

Thanks also to the Clyde Shopping Centre. We would like to acknowledge support, partnership working and funding from Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Comic Relief, the Awards for All Lottery, West Dunbartonshire Council and The Voluntary Action Fund. Thanks to these partners we have been able to deliver tourism services beyond our core service. These services have included training, an outdoor ‘Scoot Event’, the services of a Volunteer Co-ordinator and additional mobility equipment.

We want to express our gratitude to the team at Community Jobs Scotland. They have supported us in our endeavour to help young people secure employment. Finally our Progress Report would like to reflect on the boundless and enthusiastic leadership and support from each and every management committee member who has provided direction and day to day practical support for the project.

volunteering

The roles of volunteers arefundamental to our success. Since our inception many individuals have given of their time and energy to help accomplish the aims and objectives of Clyde Shopmobility. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds, serving the project and our community by assisting our customers, delivering and collecting equipment, providing -

an excellent reception serviceprojecting a positive image of our projectserving as sighted guides ensuring safety of our

equipmentmaking numerous other

contributions.

In fact, Clyde Shopmobility volunteers contributed more than 9,100 hours of their time and talent that figure is the equivalent of £80,000, a level of support for which we are truly grateful. Clyde Shopmobility deeply values the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteers, and we look forward to the continued benefits their services bring to our project and our community.

Our volunteers all have their reasons for volunteering, these can range from just getting out of the house for some social interaction to gaining skills for employment.

••

••

To formally acknowledge the value we place on our volunteerswe are committed to achieving the prestigious ‘Investing in Volunteers Award’.

This requires high standards within a wide range of assessed practices to be met across the whole team, including committee members, volunteers and staff.

Are you considering giving some of your time to help Clyde Shopmobility?

Why not give us a call or pop in to see us for a chat?

“I am so glad to be doing voluntary work with Clyde Shopmobility, I feel that I am doing something fulfilling and worthwhile, I enjoy all aspects of voluntary work, I enjoy mixing with the staff, volunteers and also meeting new people. I would recommend volunteering to anyone.”

- Philip

Rachel and Ryan’s Work Experience Journey

Clyde Shopmobility Management Committee believes that work experience is an essential activity for young people and offered this valuable opportunity to two young people interviewed for a post in their Alexandria Branch. Kate Coleman, Project Co-ordinator explains “Following an interview both candidates expressed themselves effectively and articulately. However, they couldn’t demonstrate the experience we required. The panel decided to offer both candidates the opportunity of work experience to learn new skills and further develop personal qualities.” Ryan worked with Clyde Shopmobility for 4 hours each week, and was supported by Work Connect as well as staff and volunteers from Clyde Shopmobility. After a few weeks working with us, Ryan visited the project to let us know he had secured employment with JJR Printers in Dumbarton. Ryan thanked everyone involved with Clyde Shopmobility for offering him his first opportunity to experience the world of work!

Rachel worked with Clyde Shopmobility for 25 hours per week for a period of 8 weeks where she carried out duties supported by staff and volunteers. Whilst with us Rachel gained confidence, valuable skills and experience in customer service. She has now updated her CV accordingly. Rachel is now volunteering in a Dog Cafe to gain experience in her preferred career option of working with animals.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering here, it’s a good experience and I like seeing the difference that we are making to the local community. I often

hear service users saying they could only leave the house because of this service, I would never have imagined people not being able to get out due to

mobility problems so I’m glad to support this charity through volunteering as everyone should have the ability to get out and about.”

West Dunbartonshire Council. Also to see a downturn in our number of volunteers. We will continue to support staffing levels with work experience placements, both financially assisting the project and supporting young people into employment.

Clyde Shopmobility is in a good position with regard to the level of reserves and is well placed to cope with unforeseen costs or short term reduction of income. Once again it must be stressed that the current core operating income levels are, of course, made possible only by the continued support of West Dunbartonshire Council.

I would like to thank all staff, committee members and funders for the ongoing support of our project. Thanks also to our members for their contribution to fundraising activities.

The Financial Statements for this year show an operating surplus of £64,973 for the year. This compares with a previous year surplus of £55,667. In summary, this improved position results from an underlying increase in sources of funding. It should be noted that this ‘surplus’ also includes tangible assets, for example mobility equipment, designated funds, restricted funds, for example a charity

reserve fund. This surplus will be used for development.

For Income and Costs, see the statement of Financial Activities graph above.

During this year, the Management Committee approved the purchase of new equipment and an upscale of project promotion. This has proven valuable in developing our range of services and increasing demand. It has also allowed us to expand the service to Alexandria and Dumbarton.

The principal vulnerability to the finances would be the loss of grants from our main funder,
