HAPPY NEW YEAR!

After the momentous and, sometimes, unsettling events of 2012, I’m sure that all of us are looking forward to a happy and harmonious 2013!

Which brings us to our annual New Year’s resolution—Travel Often and See More Shows!

In 2013 Boston’s brilliant theater community is bringing us a string of Broadway hits—Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon, Wicked and Looped. Even the acclaimed North Shore Music Theatre is getting into the blockbuster business

with The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music and Cats! Check the website for all the latest shows and don’t forget, even if a show is sold out, very often there are still tickets available through the Boston Theater Weekend packages—incredible values that include a night at a top hotel, an orchestra seat, breakfast, parking and more! These weekend overnights are an exclusive benefit of Show of the Month Club membership.

In travel, The Club continues to arrange some of the most affordable world-travel experiences available anywhere! As I always say, if you’re not taking advantage of our travel program, you’re missing one of the best benefits of Club membership. But, don’t take my word for it, check out the comments from your fellow members. You’ll find user reviews throughout this issue as well as on the website.

Make 2013 your year to explore the world—whether from a theater seat or on the road. Either way, The Club has your tickets!

Based on the beloved best-selling, award-winning novel by Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting comes to life on stage in a wholly original production, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, The Drowsy Chaperone, Spamalot), fea-turing a book by Tony Award nominee Claudia Shear (Dirty Blonde) and music and lyrics by Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen (The Burnt Part Boys). This world premiere musical begins its pre-Broadway engagement at Boston’s celebrated Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre this May.

Back by “Popular” demand. Variety calls

Wicked “a cultural phenome-non,” and when it last played Boston in 2010 it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards , Wicked i s “Broadway’s biggest block-buster” (The New York Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in

Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One—born with emerald green skin—is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete—and com-pletely satisfying—new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

LOOPED

Valerie Harper recreates her Tony Award-nominated perfor-mance as Tallulah Bankhead in Matthew Lombardo’s Looped.

Southern, but by no means a belle, Tallulah was known for wild partying and convention-defying exploits that surpassed even today’s celebrity bad girls. Based on a true story, the play is set in a 1965 sound studio. Ms. Bankhead has been summoned to re-record, or loop, a single muffed line of dialogue from what would be her last film, Die, Die My Darling. It’s a simple task, but ulti-mately takes hours when Bankhead arrives so inebriated she’s unable to loop the line properly. What ensues is an uproarious showdown between an uptight film editor and the outrageous leg-end. The New York Times raves “Valerie Harper gives a big, blustery performance, nailing every last laugh with a professionalism that the real Bankhead would surely admire!” Don’t miss this hysteri-cally funny comedy! I t may be hundreds of miles from the Pacific Ocean, yet the Spirit of the West

lives in South Dakota. This weeklong get-away is a wonderful chance to escape the bustle of modern life and reconnect with our country’s rich history. You’ll witness 2.5 bil-lion years of geological history in a single day via the steep canyons, spires and buttes cre-ated by the stark, beautiful environment at Badlands National Park and the 865-foot Devil’s Tower Monument (made famous in Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Of course, excursions to the man-made rock formations of Mount Rushmore and the still-in-prog-ress Crazy Horse Memorial are equally breathtaking. That said, South Dakota is more than just big rocks; you’ll spend three exciting nights in the gold rush town of Deadwood, former residence of true American originals Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. At the Hampton Inn, how-ever, with its 24-hour casino and indoor pool, you won’t be roughing it like they did. Join an authentic western adventure at Custer State Park as you watch the 49th Annual Buffalo Roundup. You’ll feel the ground tremble as more than one thousand buffalo are corralled by cowboys and park personnel. The Old West lives on…

S teeped in legend, the Amalfi Coast may have been home to the sirens of Greek

mythology, calling to travelers like Homer’s Odysseus to stop and linger. Perhaps it’s the lure of the sirens that entices visitors to this coast, yet perhaps this is simply the Italy that many travel-ers dream about—50 miles of pure paradise. Your stay is in Maiori, boasting the “widest and nicest beach on the coast.” You’ll be treated to a guided tour of the excavations at Pompeii followed by a winery visit, a full-day visit to the magical isle of Capri and a full-day excursion devoted solely to Sorrento (including lunch) and Amalfi. The next day you’ll travel, via motorboat, to Positano where you’ll have the entire day to explore on your own. O n this brand-new Travel Club adventure we explore a few of Italy’s most enchant-

ing villages. These out-of-the-way hamlets boast centuries-old beauty with none of the scars of over-development. We’ll begin in the hills outside Rome (Lazio region) in a small town called Nerola where we’ll stay at the magical Castello Orsini, a 10th-century sto-rybook castle-turned-hotel, complete with indoor and outdoor pool, gardens and spa facilities—not to mention ancient frescoes, suits of armor, old paintings, crenellated tow-ers and secret passages. Two fascinating tours are in store as we discover “Baroque Rome” and explore Rome’s Medieval Cloisters. In Sabina, we’ll stop at the medieval villages of Greccio and hill-top Labro and visit a 2,000-year-old olive oil mill. From here we transfer to San Gemini in Umbria and four-star accommodations at Hotel Duomo. We’ll enjoy an excursion to Cascate delle Marmore—a 540-foot, three-tiered, man-made waterfall created by the Romans in 271 B.C., the ruins of the Roman village of Carsulae—one of Umbria’s most fascinating archaeological parks—and the underground city of ancient Narni. A real treat awaits in unforgettable Spoleto—Roman origins, a medieval atmosphere, numerous Romanesque churches and La Rocca Albornoziana, the castle-fortress looming above the town.

I f you could visit Italy only once in your life-time, this might be the trip to take. Versilia,

on Tuscany’s northern coast, is a stretch of lovely beach resorts and charming villages sandwiched between the green pinewoods at the foot of the Apuan Alps and the blindingly blue sea. Viareggio, with origins as a 12th-century fish-ing village, is known as “the pearl” of the Riviera della Versilia with a lively seaside promenade dotted with Liberty-style architecture, shops, cafés and restaurants. We’ve included a day fea-turing elegant, medieval Lucca—still sur-rounded by its intact Renaissance walls—and stunning Pisa. For the first time The Travel Club includes an excursion to the Island of Elba where we’ll see ancient villages, Roman archaeological sites, and the Villa dei Mulini—now a museum, once the residence of Napoleon in exile. In Carrara, you’ll visit a private marble quarry before heading to historic Pietrasanta, sometimes called “the little Athens” for its mar-ble studios and artisans. “Intense beauty, great cuisine and amazing aromas….” That’s how NYTimes.com describes the wildly charming area of the Cinque Terre and we’ll treat you to lunch and a wine-tasting on this full-day visit. Capping off this holiday is breathtaking Florence where you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour and time for independent exploration.

T his exclusive new itinerary offers an in-depth exploration of “classic Italy” as we

pair the Borghi—Tuscany’s famed medieval vil-lages—with exquisite Florence, Italy ’s Renaissance capital. The “road less traveled” leads us off the beaten path to the enchanting Borghi, small Tuscan communities which are, for the most part, insulated from tourists. We’ll stay four nights in Anghiari, rated one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Outside its 12th and 13th-century fortified walls, the country-side around Anghiari seems untouched—dotted with monasteries and archaeological sites. Inside, we’ll be charmed by small squares, arti-san shops, towers and churches. Enjoy visits to San Sepolcro and ancient Monterchi, a hill-town whose name means the Mount of Hercules, as well as the Hermitage of Montecasale and the mysterious Castle of Poppi. Stunning Florence awaits and we’ll spend three nights at the Hotel Balestri, enjoy a half-day guided walking tour and have free time for independent exploration. We’ll cap off our Tuscan exploration with an excursion to Chianti for a visit to a wine museum followed by a wine tasting and lunch at the Castle of Vicchiomaggio—reputed to be where da Vinci painted his Mona Lisa.

U mbria, perhaps from the Italian “ombra” or shadow, has been overshadowed by its

more famous neighbor, Tuscany. Yet Umbria is just as interesting and breathtaking—and often less crowded. In Spello, “the jewel of Umbria,” our hotel is a restored 18th-century building with medieval origins and is a perfect reflec-tion of the city, offering splendid views and a traditional atmosphere. Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna boast 12th-century churches, Renaissance monuments and Roman origins, as well as the famous Sagrantino of Montefalco wine—and we’ve included a visit to Caprai Estate for a taste of the local grape as well as local specialties. Following a delicious extra-virgin olive oil tasting, you’ll visit Foligno and the 1,000-year-old Benedictine Abbey at Sassovivo. Deruta, with its traditional pottery industry dating back a thousand years, and Todi, first inhabited in 2700 B.C., are charm-ing, old world Italian towns with much to dis-cover in their piazzas and lanes. We’re excited to offer an excursion to vibrant Perugia with its bustling medieval center filled with monu-ments, cafes and chocolate makers—visit the Perugina store—and Assisi. As the week winds down you’ll travel to Tuscany and one of the most famous of the old hill towns—Cortona—beautifully depicted in Under the Tuscan Sun. Cortona has it all—art, culture, Roman history, Renaissance architecture and fabulous views from its medieval walls. Umbria is indeed the heart of Italy.

J oin us on a new Travel Club adventure as we explore the beautiful cities and ancient

villages of Northern Italy’s Veneto. In medieval Soave, a picturesque walled town surrounded by vineyard-covered hills, you’ll enjoy four-star accommodations near the town’s impressive castle. Discover why Verona is called one of the prettiest small cities in Italy with a guided visit highlighting its medieval and Renaissance splendor. In Bassano del Grappa, which boasts both Renaissance and Baroque-influenced architecture, you’ll visit the famous Nardini Distillery grappa factory and enjoy a taste of this fiery liqueur. A member of the exclusive club of “the most beautiful villages in Italy,” Arqua’ Petrarca has retained its medieval flavor and a visit here is akin to discovering a hard-held secret. Midweek we’ll transfer to Conegliano Veneto and the four-star Hotel Canon D’Oro—a 16th-century palazzo! Attractive, cheerful, historic and the center of the Prosecco wine-producing area, some say Conegliano’s greatest asset is its cuisine spiced with ancient delicacies. We’ve included a full-day excursion to Venice (of course!) and you’ll enjoy a walking tour and free time to explore its treasure trove of art and culture. As Italy’s best-known mountain resort, Cortina D’Ampezzo has a glamorous reputation yet remains a town of white timbered houses surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the Dolomites.

E xplore the secret side of Sicily on this new adventure. Sicilian culture is a unique blend of

art, archaeology, history, folklore and amazing cui-sine. On Sicily’s northern coast we’ll find Campofelice di Roccella and the Fiesta Hotel Garden Beach. Set in a luxuriant garden, the hotel offers a private beach, international cuisine, a well-ness center and pool. We’ll visit mountaintop Erice—whose castles seem to stand guard over the sea—and the archaeological site at Segesta—whose ancient Greek temple claims to be the “best-preserved in the world”—before an after-noon spent at the Planeta Winery on the Ulmo Estate. In this landscape—surrounded by vine-yards and a wine cellar built next to the 16th-cen-tury farmhouse, we’ll enjoy a light lunch and a special tasting. Heading into the Madonie Mountains we’ll stop in the ancient hill-top village of Alimena for a picnic and a taste of fresh-made ricotta before continuing to the hills above Noto. Here we’ll discover another of Sicily’s secrets with our stay at the four-star Masseria degli Ulivi, an ancient farming estate complete with a rustic res-taurant; wood-beam ceilings; terracotta floors; and outdoor pool. While the main building is classic 19th-century architecture the guestrooms are air conditioned with private bath and satellite TV. A full-day excursion brings us first to Siracusa—home to well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins—and the island of Ortigia, the historical heart of Siracusa with charming, narrow lanes, pal-aces and Baroque churches. The last leg of our discovery brings us to Taormina, perched high above blue seas and adorned with blazing red bou-gainvillea framing white-washed buildings.

Since our first journey to mysterious Puglia, The Travel Club has discovered there’s much

more to explore in this southern, sun-soaked province. Join us on this vacation to “the real Italy” as we reveal the art, culture, tradition and cuisine of Puglia. Our holiday begins in beautiful Lecce—“the Rome of the South”—where art is found not only in museums, but all around in elegant Baroque architecture. We’ll enjoy a guided visit of this “open air exhibition” and an afternoon in the Adriatic seaside town of Otranto. We’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Trulli of Alberobello—the world-famous picturesque cone-shaped houses, Locorotondo (reminiscent of Jerusalem) for a wine tasting, and the hilltown of Ostuni with its dazzling white-washed buildings. Enjoy the col-orful streets and central piazza of Matera, the town famous for its extensive rock dwellings; Castellana Grotte, a fantastic underground “nat-ural temple” and a visit to the Barsento winery for a tasting (Puglia produces one tenth of the wine drunk in Europe) and a sampling of the local fare. “Saving the best for last” is perhaps the most compelling reason to join us this November—we’ll be treated to three intimate cooking demonstrations in the Tinelli Family’s private Trullo in Alberobello. While not “hands-on” cooking lessons, this amazing per-sonal experience (you may get to stir the pot!) is topped off by a delicious dinner.

O ur popular holidays to Florence are such great value—flights, hotel, trans-

fers, breakfast and a tour—virtually every departure sells out. Florence, like no other European city, epitomizes the spirit of the Renaissance. From the 14th to 16th centu-ries, the arts, sciences and architecture flour-ished here in the city called home by Giotto, Brunelleschi, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Galileo and Dante. Today, Florence is a stunning medieval city consid-ered to be one of the world’s most beautiful with its numerous palaces, churches and museums fil led with master works. According to UNESCO, 60% of the world’s most important works of art are located in Italy and half of these are in Florence. Once you’ve oohed and aahed over the museums and architecture be sure to spend some time relaxing in a charming piazza where the café is a vital part of the Florentine social life. Watch as the city lights up and the squares and streets are filled with locals and visitors alike enjoying their evening “passeggiata.”

J oin us in Tuscany for hands-on cooking les-sons complemented by touring, oil, cheese

and wine tastings and free time to enjoy Lucca’s famous “foodie” festival. Stunning, elegant, ancient and charming, Lucca offers all we expect from Italy—amazing food, art and archi-tecture, unique shopping—in an unspoiled set-ting, highlighted by a centuries-old wall surrounding the city, that is perfect for strolling. This colorful jewel of Tuscany is still a well-kept secret and the pace of life here is relaxed. Hotel Universo—a 16th-century palazzo across from the Ducal Palace—welcomes us with spectacu-lar views and traditionally decorated rooms with modern amenities. A short walk brings us to Gli Orti di Via Elisa in Lucca’s historic center. This trattoria pizzeria offers a simple, genuine and traditional style of cooking. We’ll don our aprons and roll up our sleeves with proprietor Samuele—followed by lunch! We’ll also enjoy an excursion to Pietrasanta—long considered an international center of art and sculpture; Michelangelo chose marble quarried in the mountains above the town and today, artists’ studios mingle with chic shops in the cobbled alleyways radiating from the central piazza. The icing on this holiday treat is an excursion to Florence with a walking tour and free time.

NEW YEAR’S on The AMALFI COAST

Saturday, December 28, 2013–Saturday, January 4, 2014

J oin us on one of The Travel Club’s favorites—spending New Year’s on the Amalfi Coast!

Enjoy the off-season slower pace of this breathtak-ing coastal region and be treated to a special stay on its magnificent waterfront. La Bussola Hotel, located just steps from the sea, is also near the renowned 11th-century cathedral. While your friends in the States are shivering, you’ll bask in a visit to the legendary excavations of Pompeii, fol-lowed by lunch and a stop in Sorrento. Spend a day in the jet-set hotspot of Capri including admission to Villa San Michele and the Garden of Caesar Augustus. We’ve also arranged an excur-sion to Positano (including minibus transportation to the city center) and Ravello with admission to Villa Rufolo, before the gala dinner at the hotel on New Year’s Eve. The holiday period in Amalfi is filled with art exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances—a veritable marathon of events that lead up to the magnificent New Year’s Eve celebra-tions in the Town Square. The festivities begin with a lively procession that reaches its peak with a superb fireworks display at midnight, followed by revelers singing and dancing ’til dawn. The next day, the folk groups repeat their performances in the square and wish a Happy New Year to tourists and residents alike. Welcome 2014 in style!

The Arrabida region is also home to a Natural Park, pristine beaches and more than 35 km of daz-zling limestone mountains. Scenic fishing villages dot the coastline and your stops include Cascais and Sintra, offering stunning views that remain unchanged since Columbus pulled up anchor 500 years ago. C ruise through history as you sail along the Mediterranean coast to the Iberian

Peninsula. Experience an exotic mosaic as every port brings history to life with magnificent cas-tles and fortresses, fine art and architectural treasures. Launched in 2008, the MSC Poesia is elegant, modern and luxurious with a spectacu-lar waterfall in the foyer, a Zen garden in the sushi bar and a serene 12,000 square foot spa. MSC Poesia offers two main restaurants, an à la carte restaurant, Kaito Sushi Bar, 16 bars and lounges, and entertainment in its state-of-the-art theater, disco and Casino Royal. Italian cul-ture is prevalent onboard and serves as an important part of the entire experience—“Poesia” is Italian for “poetry” and each deck is named after an Italian poet.

PORTS OF CALL:

Genoa: The Porto Antico is a charming blend of old and new with cafés, shops, a maritime museum and the largest aquarium in Europe.

Malaga: Heart of the sunny Costa del Sol; fan-tastic beaches nestled between the mountains and the sea. Founded 3,000 years ago, ancient Moorish monuments remain in Malaga and the surrounding region.

Lisbon: With its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and more than 20 centuries of history, there is no shortage of landmarks to visit—stroll through cobbled streets to view Jeronimo’s Monastery and Belem Tower.

Casablanca: A rich heritage of Art Deco architecture fused with North African ele-ments acts as a reminder of the city’s French colonial past. Look for the impressive Hassan II Mosque, towering over the coast as you sail into the harbor.

Barcelona: A flamboyant, spirited city with fascinating history, Art Nouveau décor and architecture. The old town lies along the port divided by tree-lined boulevards known as Las Ramblas.

W ith breathtaking volcanic craters, lush gardens, hot springs and stunning coastal

views, the Azores are reminiscent of both Hawaii and Ireland. A non-stop flight from Boston brings you to beautiful Sao Miguel—the Green Island—in just four-and-a-half hours. From your downtown accommodations in colorful Ponta Delgada, you’re close to museums, monuments and historic landmarks as well as lively markets, lovely parks and plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops. Visit the famous crater lakes at Sete Cidades—and perhaps dis-cover why one lagoon is blue and the other green—the mystical Fire Lake, and the hot springs in the Valley of Furnas. You’ll be enter-tained at a tea plantation and passion fruit liqueur factory, enjoy a traditional Azorean feast cooked underground by the hot springs and be treated to a demonstration by the amazing Lusitano horses. Add in quaint villages, tropical waterfalls, botanic gardens and a full day to explore on your own and you’ll understand why National Geographic rates the Azores as one of the top ten vacation spots in the world!

W hether it’s your first trip to Paris or your twenty-first, this Travel Club

classic remains one of the best values in travel today! For this getaway we’ve chose accom-modations in the heart of Montparnasse. Located along the northern edge of the 14th arrondissement, Montparnasse is known for its lively nightlife, much of which is based around historic brasseries like La Coupole, La Rotonde and Le Select. Once a warren of artists’ studios and swinging cafés, this neigh-borhood takes you back to the café society of the early 20th century—imagine having a drink with Picasso, Modigliani, Hemingway, Man Ray, or Trotsky. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace of Tour Montparnasse for the best panoramic view of the city and treat yourself to a cocktail at Le Bar Américain on the 56th floor. The Hotel Villa Modigliani offers a secluded inner courtyard and garden, proximity to the Jardin du Luxembourg and Saint Germain des Prés, and is also conve-nient to the Paris Metro. This neighborhood is perfect for strolling, dining, and shopping in the Galeries Lafayette Montparnasse. You may want to visit Rue d’Odessa for its countless pancake houses (a specialty from France’s Brittany region) and the pedestrian-ized Rue Daguerre.

Travel south to Provence, aboard the high-speed TGV Train, and the papal city of Avignon. Enjoy a Cezanne-inspired tour of Aix-en-Provence before heading for the exquisite French Riviera. T ruth be told, aside from that little skir-mish back in 1775, we Yanks have a

genuine affinity for the British. Particularly when it comes to visiting our older relative across the pond. London’s must-see, life-sized postcard stops Big Ben, Tower of London, Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace make a great primer before traveling to scholarly Cambridge and medieval York. Stroll the famous “Shambles” for a faithful picture of the Middle Ages. Although defiantly not ‘British,’ Edinburgh is a look back at centuries past. (For once in your life, try the haggis!) Back in England, the journey takes you to the Lake District and the village of Grassmere, home to the famous poet William Wordsworth. Recharged, it’s off to Bath, site of ancient Roman spas and today’s unpretentious home to many luminar-ies from explorers to rock stars. Farther north, your travels take you through the many vil-lages of the Cotswolds and your final desti-nation of Stratford-Upon-Avon—birthplace of William Shakespeare.

GRACELAND

E xperience history and heritage on this American adventure as we explore the

southern heartland on this land and cruise vacation. We’ll begin in Memphis—the birthplace of the Blues, Rock ’n’ Roll and Soul—with a tour led by local musicians, a visit to Graceland and southern dining on Beale Street. The next day we’ll stop in Tupelo to visit Elvis’ birthplace and museum before we head to Jackson, the “City of Soul.” From here it ’s off to Natchez—an elegant reminder of the plantation lifestyle of the antebellum South—to board the paddle-wheel American Queen—the largest steam-boat ever built. Referred to as a “Victorian time capsule” with glistening woodwork, fresh flowers, antiques and lacy filigree-cov-ered balconies, the Queen is also fitted with today’s modern amenities. We’ll enjoy pro-fessional showboat-style entertainment and nightly dancing to swing and big band music. As we head upriver we’ll enjoy stops in Vicksburg—called the “Red Carpet City of the South”—and Helena, AR, followed by a full day of steamboatin’ before we arrive back in Memphis.
