The first event of September will be our annual Patriot Weekend. Our community will once again honor the sacrifice made for freedom by raising donations for the Folds of Honor Foundation. Last year, the Patriot Weekend Committee, led by Jim Dockter, expanded the one-day golf tournament into several days of activities and resulted in the second- highest fundraising event for Folds of Honor in the whole nation. Please read more about Folds of Honor at www.foldsofhonor.org. Once again, the Patriot Day Committee has worked closely with our club staff to create a weekend full of activities for all ages and interests, from the traditional Patriot Day Golf Tournament on Saturday morning through our “Concert at the Clubhouse” on Sunday, September 1, where two great bands will make this a fun event for the entire family. Thanks to the outpouring of support by our community, donations have already surpassed our 2012 event; now we need everyone to come out and join in the fun! See the complete listing of events and contacts on the calendar insert, or visit laketoxawaycc.com/patriotweekend. Please note that our normal Sunday Brunch will not be served on September 1 due to setup for that evening’s concert. Picnic on the Porch will be served on the Toxaway Porch from 11:30am to 2:00pm, and an omelet station will be available inside from 11:30am until 12:30pm. The final weeks of September will be abuzz with activity on the croquet lawns! On September 19-21, the club will again host the Lake Toxaway Golf Croquet Tournament, sanctioned by the U.S. Croquet Association. Then, on September 21, everyone is invited to attend the Toxaway Mountain Challenge IV. Even with the rain in August, we managed to get our tournaments completed. The Mardi Gras Tournament was a huge success, not only with the number of participants, but also with the costumes! Winners in the net division were the Crowley and Roberts team. Winners in the gross division were a tie between the Veit and Kausch team and the team of Alexander, Ure, and Ward. The Men’s Member-Guest Tournament was won by the father and son team of Harry and Ryan Hornish in an exciting finish, beating Craig Eyster and Michael McCarthy in a three-hole sudden death playoff. The men battled the conditions throughout the Club Championship, but Dwight Duke successfully defended his title as Men’s Club Champion, while Ron Follman captured the Senior Club Championship. Congratulations to all the flight winners!Upcoming events in September begin with a Sunday Mixer on September 8 with a shotgun start at 1:00pm. Sign up as a couple or a single and we will pair you up. On Tuesday, September 10, Jeff and I will captain the teams for the Ladies Toxaway Cup Match. The Ladies’ Closing Luncheon will be on September 24. Sign up and come join the fun!We will be aerifying the greens on September 18 and 19. Nine holes will be open for play each day. Circumstances require that we do it sooner rather than later. Thanks for all your patience throughout the rainy times and changes. Drier days are coming!
Aerification of GreensWill take place Wednesday, September 18 and Thursday, September 19. Nine holes will be available for play each day.

To be a stronger doubles player at any level, learn to poach at least twice a game to cause your opponents into unforced errors. Also, change formations often. For example, sometimes line up both on baseline when returning a serve. When serving, Australian is a great way to line up to get in your opponents’ heads and make them think about which way you’re moving. Try these tips and see how your doubles game will improve. See you on the courts!

Fitness Tip: Power walking Fall in particular is a spectacular time to be out hiking and walking in the fresh mountain air. Follow these tips below to get the most out of your autumn walk. Did you know that speed walking can increase your caloric burn rate without the joint jarring effects of jogging? Without a doubt, walking is good exercise. But if you want an extra challenge, try speed walking. Simply put, speed walking, or power walking is walking very fast without running. Arms are swung in pace with the stride, and one foot is on the ground at all times. Your stride is slightly longer and considerably quicker than in a leisurely stroll.Briskly walking one mile (brisk usually means 3.5 to 4 miles per hour) burns nearly as many calories as running a mile at a moderate pace, and confers similar fitness and health benefits. Even strolling or slow walking (about 2 miles per hour) will give you some health benefits. The number of calories burned during a speed-walking workout depends on such factors as your weight, the length of your workout, and how vigorously you swing your arms. Remember to pick up the pace for your health!

CROQUET
at the top of the charts for raising important dollars for our important community through Lake Toxaway Charities. Thanks to all who participated.
Annual Meeting & Club ChampionshipsAugust 26 was another auspicious day for the LTMC. Our Annual Meeting was held and was well attended. We would like to bid a fond adieu and thanks to our outgoing President, Linda Garner, and her cabinet for doing such a grand job coordinating our hectic season. We would also like to welcome our new President, George Bagwell, and his posse. We look forward to a great 2014 under their leadership. I am sure that our ranks will continue to grow and prosper. It was heartwarming to hear Don Buebendorf explain to us in the meeting that if it were not for croquet, he and Nancy might not have stayed at Lake Toxaway. After their first year here, they had not met many folks. They were enticed to try out croquet, and their friendship world exploded. Let that be a lesson to all you readers who are not Mallet Club members. Give the game a try, and we bet you will like it. Your dues for the 2014 season can be mailed to our treasurer, Fred Caswell, at his Hilton Head address. Club Championship matches were also held August 26. After more than 200 competitive matches in the Golf Croquet Tournament, the results were as follows: Gary Harden defeated Ted Mullet in the 3rd Flight, Les Avera was victorious over Roy Messer in the 2nd Flight, Grady Price outwicketed “Coach” Catuzzi in the 1st Flight, and Dave Wilkes was the commander of the Championship Flight over Don Molitor. In the Association Rules Tournament, Nancy Avera and Bob Hamilton were the final victors over George Bagwell and Don Buebendorf in a spirited match. Thanks and congratulations to our winners, runners-up, and all who participated this year.
Remember...Keep your eyes on the ball, bring the mallet back low and slow, follow through, and watch the wickets happen. And most of all, pray to the sky gods for more of the great yellow orb!
CROQUETNUTS, we have a problem! There seems to be an unusual object fixed firmly in the sky. This unidentified (obviously alien) orb is glowing bright yellow and seems to be emitting a lot of light and heat. This is something we have not seen in a long time. Whatever it is, we are happy because it is making our play time much more comfortable. Many thanks to the sky gods. Our lawn activity continues to grow and increase with each passing month. The Lake Toxaway Mallet Club is now up to 183 CROQUETNUTS strong, and WNC now officially has 10 mallet clubs in the region between Lake Toxaway and Highlands and is the fastest growing croquet area in the country. Wine and Wickets continues to be well attended, and Kenny Lovett is continuing to make our post-W&W challenges more fun each Monday. As a note, Wine and Wickets will be played on Labor Day Monday.
Feast with FriendsOur last “Feast with Friends” with Falconer Peter Kipp-duPont, Suri, and Seymour, was another sell-out event for the country club. Thanks to all who attended and again to Larry Bradner for putting together another rousing success. The final 2013 speaker’s series dinner is September 9 with our own Jim Morgan, CEO of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, tell us how he brought this infamous company out of the doldrums and into more and more mouths. Please remember to call or go online to make reservations, as this is bound to be another full house.
Lake Toxaway Charities Tournament Lee and Denby Davenport have again outdone themselves by organizing another successful Lake Toxaway Charities Croquet Tournament. Twenty-four CROQUETNUTS had a great time competing, with Carol and Gary Harden taking home the victory in the first flight and Don and Nancy Buebendorf capturing the win in the second flight. The LTMC is consistently

annual Mountain Interclub Challenge. Gary and Carol Harden have put together some of our best shotmakers to represent us against the other eight participating clubs. It is a must for you to come to the lawns to cheer on your fellow CROQUETNUTS. Golf Croquet Tournament & Toxaway Mountain Challenge IV - On September 19-21, we will host our second annual nationally-sanctioned Lake Toxaway Golf Croquet Tournament, which is attracting players from all over North America, and the Toxaway Mountain Challenge IV, which is bringing in professionals from all over the world. The tournament finals and exhibition both being held on Saturday should make for an incredibly exciting day. Remember that the Mountain Challenge is open to everyone, so feel free to invite friends and family. The club will again have the grills fired up for a cookout lunch in between the two events. USCA Golf Croquet National Championships - Normally these are the season capping events for us, but this year we have yet another new and exciting display of talent for you: the USCA is so enamored with our contributions to the world of croquet and the quality of our lawns that they have asked us to host the USCA Golf Croquet National Championship Tournament on September 22-25. The top golf croquet players in the United States will congregate on the Lake Toxaway Courts to compete for the coveted trophy. This is your chance to watch the game at its top level and an honor for our club to be asked to host the tournament. We all want to thank Jane and George Enochs for being so instrumental in garnering this kind of national attention for our community. What an incredible 2013 season we are having!

Upcoming EventsAs if all of that was not enough, there is still more excitement and play to come! Patriot Weekend Croquet Events - On Sunday, September 1, Don Molitor will again organize the Patriot Weekend skills challenge. In addition, Don has put together four teams of eight players each to participate in a round robin competitive play. This should be a lot of fun, so come down to the courts that afternoon to watch your fellow malleteers compete.LTMC Cookout - September 16, following Wine & Wickets will be our annual LTMC Cookout on the Main Dining Room porch. This will be another fun time where our guys cook and wear silly aprons and the girls help set up and cleanup. Make your reservations so we know how much food to order. Social Chairpersons Susie Dickman and Mary Smith have done a fine job this year, and this event will be no exception.Mountain Interclub Challenge - On September 4, nine Western North Carolina clubs (including our own) will congregate on the Toxaway lawns for the

Members and their guests enjoyed a beautiful lunch prepared by Chef Mike McDonald and a lovely atmosphere planned by Chairman Mary Lou Crowley. She will continue to be a blessing to all who knew her at Lake Toxaway.
