    QUESTION, WHAT DO SPORTS

TARS DO WHEN THEY AREEATEN? The great Christy Ringould answer that. One eveningfter a Munster championshipame he went up to the hurlingeld in Glen Rovers and spent twoours practising side line cuts fromposition where he had missedne playing for Cork that veryfternoon. When asked what he

was doing his reply was simple,he next time I get to take a sidene cut from that position I wont

hit it wide. Our U14 hurlers are

clearly cut from a similar cloth the great Ring. Hours after thedefeat to Roscrea in the NorthFinal they are back in the hurlifield at dusk practising their skand more importantly having fWhat a great bunch of lads theare and great representatives oour parish and club. eir list of all time mostnoying songs) those lyricsuld well have been writtenout Nenagh senior hurler Richiennery!

nnery has had his fair share ofocks and disappointmentsoughout his hurling career.

999 he laments was an awfular. I played in three major finals,e Fitzgibbon Cup Final, the Corknior hurling final with UCC as wellthe Tipperary senior hurling final

h Nenagh and lost them all. Is very down over it, it took me ag time to get over it. I was leftndering if Id ever win a medalain. However those defeats madenning all the sweeter. When wen the North senior title in 2001 Is elated and I realised in sportd life you will always get setbackst you must pick yourself up andep going.2008 was anothereat chapter in his playing careeren Nenagh defeated Portroe in

e Kilmacud All Ireland Sevens. Its magical to win an All-Irelandh the club. Going up on the daydidnt know what to expect butwe started to win games ournfidence and determination begansoar. At the final whistle theotion I felt was amazing. I haveyed many big championshipmes for Nenagh but I rememberat day better than most. It wastraordinary. Life is certainly

    eet for the Limerick based

teacher at the moment as he hasrecently made his comeback afteran eleven month layoff throughinjury.

It was a very frustrating time onthe side lines. I was watching thelads train and play and I wasanxious to be a part of it. However Ihad to be patient. I knew with along term injury it is important notto rush back before you are ready

otherwise you could be back tosquare one before you know it.Flannery did everything possible toensure he took to the playing fieldsagain. Once I was injured I didnt

wait around. I tried to getbest treatment as soon aspossible to get myself righTrue to his word Richie man appointment with Dr. Falvey in the Santry SporClinic, one of the leadingspecialists in his field in thworld. Not only that but hreceived ongoing expertphysiotherapy andrehabilitation fromBallinahinchs Donnacha Ra Limerick based

physiotherapist who worked withe Tipperary senior hurlers in 2000. This combined with the ghelp of strength and conditionicoach and Munster rugby playeNiall Ronan helped Richie get bon the field of play in recent we

If any injured player sought madvice on an injury it would besimple: Take no chances, get itlooked after straight away and

to get the best treatment possso you can get fit again.

Since his return to action Richifound himself in the unusualposition of full forward. I playemost of my career in the half bline so playing at full forward isstrange but new and excitingchallenge that so far I am enjoI did play briefly at times in 20and 2006 with the club in theforwards while I also ventured there with UCC but I am still nethe role. I have discovered thathere is a lot more to playing inforwards than tapping an easy over the bar. Im feeling a littleguilty for giving our forwards atime over the years now!!!Allthe club are delighted to see Rback in action and now throughthe county quarter-finals, we whim and the senior hurlers the best for the rest of their campa

COME ON NENAGH AND BRINGOUR MOTHERS"!!!!!!! A strangeattle cry but one that was veryommon in the 1940s amongupporters of Nenagh hurling. Athe time, due to rationing and Themergency, transport was rare.etrol was limited to importantervices such as doctors andriests. Unfortunately hurling

wasn't considered an importantervice so many hurlers from theown had to walk (only a few hadicycles) to matches. If we werelaying outside the parish it was

often a walk of a couple of hoursto the venue (away games toLorrha and Borrisoleigh must havebeen a killer). Nenagh had a hugefollowing at the time, among whichwas many of the players"mammys". They used to bringfood with them to the game andwould feed the players prior to thematch to re-energise them afterthe walk or cycle and so the townsupporters created the battle cry

"Come on Nenagh and bring yourmothers".

    this months edition we take

other trip down memory lane ands time the focus of our attentionthe Junior B team. In 1992,rtin Morris led the Junior B teamour first ever North Tipperaryampionship and two years later, clan Nolan repeated the samet for our second, andfortunately to date, our last titlethis grade.the Q-F we defeated neighboursrgess on a scoreline of 2-06 to 0-points with Con Morris and

mon O Kennedy grabbing theals. This set up a semi-final clashh Silvermines in Toomevara onptember 10th. The Blues won thiscounter 3-06 to 1-06. At half timengs did not look good for Nenaghwe trailed by a point and were

duced to fourteen men but theroduction of evergreen hero, ttie Ryan swung things in our

vour and we dominated thecond half to set up a final clashh great rivals Toomevara whoat us 0-14 to 1-08 in the previousars decider.this final Nenagh won on a

oreline of 2-13 to 0-06 "with flaird a fair measure ofcomplishment" wrote Jerry Slevinyed in beautiful conditions on arfect pitch, Nenagh startedghtly with points from Jason

vin and Billy Flannery in theening minutes. Toomevaraminated the rest of the half andhout the brilliance of FrankGrath at wing back and a superbve from goalkeeper Darraghinn in the sixth minute fromrnard Hackett "the greyhounds"uld have opened up a wide

argin on the scoreboard. In factinjury time point from Mark

eehan levelled the sides.the second half little separated

the sides until the inspirationalswitch of Mervyn Scanlon to centreforward. The Toome defence startedto panic such was the influence ofScanlon and resorted to fouling tokeep the Nenagh attack at baywhich fell right into the hands ofsharp shooter Billy Flannery who

notched over five second half frees. In the 54th minute Nenagh got theirfirst goal from full forward JasonNevin and the second goal arrivedcourtesy of Eamon O Kennedyapproaching the final whistle. Thebiggest cheer of the day came whenMattie Ryan, introduced as a secondhalf substitute, scored a point withfive minutes remaining. Nenaghtotally dominated the second halfand such was their brilliance on the

day that Toomevara only had oneman on the score sheet, namelyBernard Hackett. This win set up asemi-final clash UpperchurchDrombane in Templemore. Thisturned out to be a dramatic affairwith Nenagh winning 5-11 to 5-09,Jason Nevin and Eamon O Kennedyboth grabbed two goals each to setup a county final clash with SouthChampions Carrick Swans inDrombane. Unfortunately Nenaghs

youthful side, the majority of which

were under 23, came a croppeagainst a wily and experiencedSwan outfit. This was a toughencounter with numerous stoppfor injuries and bookings, andNenagh's cause was not helpedthe unfortunate sending off of captain Declan Nolan, and his

immediate counterpart TonyFitzpatrick. Indeed Nolans senoff led to a vicious assault on aunsuspecting jacket behind thegoal!!! Nenagh fought gallantlythroughout and regretfully misnumber of chances and it finish07 to 0-06 for Carrick Swans.Another sad note on this day wthat it marked the last time MaRyan donned the light blue jersfor Nenagh. No one is quite sur

how old he was when he retirethere are consistent rumours thhe even lined out alongsideCchulainn in the Cooley MounFor Nenagh, it is always going difficult to win at Junior B levelis our clubs third team against other clubs second team. As thchampionship progresses wegenerally lose players to injurythe Junior A outfit. This shows

brilliant achievement of this teareaching a county final.

n you remember your firstaining session with theub? Tommy Mulcahy and Olliealsh were there and we wereught how to hold the hurleyoperly. We thought the run frome goal line was the longest run of

r lives (little did we know what'd face in later years) and we

actised pucking on the groundng our left and right sides.

ho is your toughest opponentd why? Its hard to pick just one.eryone fights extremely hard one pitch but my toughestponents are Alanna Morris, Aileenggan, Ciara McGrath, Daniellerington and Louise Hickey whene was here. They all have souch talent, skill, passion for the

game and never give up. There areso many more but luckily I amnever marking any of them.

Favourite Food: Nothing beatsMammy's home-made chicken curryor a toasted tuna and sweetcornwrap.Favourite Drink: Water or ice coldmilk.Favourite Music: I love all kinds ofmusic especially pop.Favourite Hurler: Jason Forde, he

Advice to young players: Stickwith it, never give up. Everyone willhave bad days, but it's important tokeep the head up and stay workinghard. Take the advice from yourtrainers and always encourage yourteam mates, they're friends you'llhave for life. You'll get out of it whatyou put in so give the time, effort,

patience and respect and you'll getit back in abundance.

Biggest influence on yourcareer: The biggest influence onmy career is Toomevara's DeirdreHughes and all the older players Isaw playing with Nenagh when Istarted. Also all my trainers thewhole way up along whoencouraged me to be the best Icould be and who have taught meall I know. But on the career I wish

to pursue after school, is local

physio John Casey. He advisedon a lot of things about theprofession and things I need toknow.Something we don't know ayou: I have completed the Gaibronze and silver medal awardI am currently going for the go
