COMMODORE’ S CORNER
It’s the Winter Olympics and the most challenging event this year
is staying awake through the whole evening’s episode! Your “ole”
Commodore has no idea how long those episodes are because he’s
yet to successfully “challenge” the whole evening.
Speaking of great episodes! Our Vice Commodore Jerry Han-
cock and Rear Commodore Diana Hancock hosted one of the
most entertaining and hilarious gatherings at our February General
Membership meeting titled, “The Love Boat”. I never knew I was
so good at the Mexican Hat Dance! Through some computer
magic they were able to make your Commodore and a whole host
of our membership look even more ridiculous than we already do.
I laughed so hard I had to stop watching it. Good show!
In March, Duane and Audrey Bordvick are hosting our meeting
with a great presentation of sailing (and fooling around) in the
Greek Isles.
The 33rd racing of the America’s Cup occurred in February. The
venue was Valencia, Spain. The Defender—Team Alinghi
(Swiss). The Challenger—BMW Oracle (USA). Best two out of
three. The USA Team won the first two races very handily and the
America’s Cup returns to the United States for the first time in
many years. They chose to race this even in giant multi-hulls. It
was something to see. Try “Googling” America’s Cup and have
some fun.
The great February weather got me thinking about all those pre-
season maintenance projects on the powerboat and sailboat. With
all those sunny days, I started to make a dent in my project list.
Remember we’ll set up the Fire Extinguisher guy in April. In the
meantime, I’ll try to think up some handy reminders for both of
our project lists.
Please fill out all the pages of the survey form that was enclosed in
last month’s newsletter and send it in.
With the daffodils in full bloom and pine pollen on the hood of my
truck, I’m heading for the Claritin! Aloha! Dave

“BAIL OUT” MAKES ANNUAL LIST OF TOP 10 BOAT NAMES Boat names can reveal much about the person-
ality of a boat owner, or they can also reflect
what’s happening in current events. One new-
comer in the most popular boat names list—
”Bail Out”— clearly fits the latter category.
Here’s 2010’s Top Ten compiled by BoatUS:
1. Second Wind
2. Seas the Day
3. Lazy Daze
4. Jolly Roger
5. Bail Out
6. On the Rocks
7. Pegasus
8. Serenity Now
9. Namaste
10. Comfortably Numb
BoatUS Graphics service offers a free library
of over 8,500 boat names and also allows boat-
ers to easily select, custom design, and preview
names for your own boat online—without hav-
ing to pay upfront. For more information or to
view videos on how to install a vinyl boat
name, visit the online service at
www.BoatUS.com/boatgraphics.
A list with the annual top ten boat names—
starting from 1991—can also be found at the
Web site.
MARCH IS NATIONAL YACHT
CLUB HISTORY MONTH
Er, well, maybe it’s not yet a “national” move-ment, it’s a little more localized. Ok, ok, so it’s just Lopez Island’s yacht club history month, but it’s bound to catch on. Here are some snippets from past meeting notes and newsletters to show how our club has evolved: 9/23/81 “Linda Johnson raised the question of lack of events for power boaters.” 7/21/82 “The fishing derby was a combina-tion of success and failure. We made money so it was a success. The failure was no one caught any fish.” 3/12/93 Entry in check deposit register: “88 cents—Change found in yard” 6/8/94 “The annual LIYC/IMC Flea Mar-ket/Swap Meet will be at IMC on July 9th. This is the event where boaters buy stuff they don’t need so they will have something to sell at next year’s flea market.” 7/20/94 “What has become an annual clam-feed on the Hubbard/Sundquist beach was a resounding success with 30+ members and guests gathering for yet another gustatory orgy. There was a short club meeting be-fore we disbanded but the secretary was so overloaded with clams and other goodies that he forgot to take notes.” 9/15/94 “The proposed Commodore’s Ball is still not a done deal because of lack of re-sponse from the membership. Only about 8 or 9 people have committed.” See more LIYC History starting on page 5.

FEBRUARY’S GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING was a
rip-roaring success thanks to Hosts/Producers/Directors/Engineers Jerry and Diana Hancock. Their LIYC version of “The Love Boat Visits Lopez” was hilarious! The dance contest sequence starring Hubbards,
Rydbergs and Zaborskys with Mexican Hat Dance guest appearances by Carole White, Dave Welker and others had members rolling in the aisles. Thanks to Jerry and Diana for a great show!

Thanks, Jerry and Diana !
Past Commodore Nancy Luebke, Joan Long
and Lynn Hall Audrey Bordvick, Bill Johnson, and Barbara Morey
Gary Zerbst thanked the LIYC members for their generous dona-
tions to Sail Lopez and the Youth Scholarship Sailing Fund. Then
the 50/50 draw was won by Barbara Morey, who promptly do-
nated her winnings to the cause.

NEXT MEETING March 17, 2010
Potluck at the Islander 1800 Hours
Lopez island yacht club will
be 32 years old—2010
One of the most important contributors to the longevity of LIYC has been the loyalty and
support of our many longtime members. As this is National Yacht Club History Month (ok,
ok, so it’s Lopez Island Yacht Club History Month), we’d like to honor some of our longest-
standing members in this and the next few “Newsline” editions.
We have 10 members in good standing that have been in the club for over 20 years:
Rod Duncan (1978), Bob Cunningham (1978), Lynette Leaf (1986), Bob and Peggy
Hubbard (1986), Bob and Joyce Myhr (1987), Jackie Ashe (1987), Leo and Betty
Zaborsky (1987).
One of these members, Rod Duncan (at left with his wife Karen
Bistrin and member Cathy Mecray at the 2009 Christmas party),
was one of the original nine founding members who started Lopez
Island Yacht Club in the summer of 1978. Rod was LIYC’s very
first Vice Commodore and became Commodore in 1980. Now
Rod serves as our Treasurer for 2010 and is currently enjoying a
winter vacation in Mexico with a broken front tooth (which, he
says, happened while biting into a tortilla. Yeah, right!)
The nine founding members voted to extend charter membership
to anyone applying and being accepted for membership before No-
vember 1, 1978. Robert (Bob) Cunningham was one of those
who rose to this challenge. Bob was a commercial fisherman back
then with 3 gillnetters from 29’ to 33’. Bob has had lots of scary experiences as a 32-year
club member, including being lost in the fog for three days. But, he says, his SCARIEST
time was when Robina Bant (LIYC’s first Commodore) was pregnant with a soon-to-be-
born baby and her husband had to go off the island. Bob stayed with Robina in case she
went into labor. “Boy, was I glad when Joe got back”, Bob sighs with relief!
Today Bob lives in Bellingham and is about to retire from a career selling gold mining
equipment and metal detectors, including those used under water. Bob says he’d like to
make it to an LIYC meeting one of these days. Perhaps we can coax him into telling us
more early club stories.
Lynette Leaf (shown at right with Anne Wor-
ley and Barbara Rydberg at the 1999 Opening
Day festivities) and her husband Wally joined
the club in 1986. The Leafs cruised a 40’ cus-
tom built trawler Ella Marie. The club is in-
debted to Lynette for hosting LIYC’s Board of
Director meetings in her home for many years—
always with coffee and lots of goodies.
(Lynette’s “Gosh and By-Golly Cookies” are
the best treats ever !!!)
THANKS TO OUR LONGSTANDING MEMBERS, continued
Bob and Peggy Hubbard (shown at left on their sailboat
Margareta in Von Donop Inlet on the 2003 North Cruise)
were also 1986 inductees. The ultimate party’ers, Bob and
Peggy welcomed LIYC to their home, their beach, their
boat for every event from clam bakes to Christmas parties.
But they worked just as hard as they played. Both Bob and
Peggy served on the Board of Directors, Peggy’s singing
(and Bob’s accompaniment) entertained many a member,
and Bob’s floatbuilding expertise is legendary.
Bob and Joyce Myhr
(at right attending a
2002 general member-
ship meeting) joined
LIYC in early 1987.
The Myhrs own a 19’ Glasply Island Hopper, and they’re so
busy with multiple organizations and causes around the is-
land, the boat mainly earns its name by “hopping” Bob from
Lopez to San Juan for county commissioner meetings.
Jackie Ashe (at left with her hus-
band Mack Martin) is another 23
year member, joining in June
1987. Jackie is an accomplished sailor (with captain’s license) and
takes summer charters on her 36’ auxiliary sailboat Kismet, designed
and built by her brother, Lopez’ Patrick Cotten.
These days Jackie and Mack also enjoy travelling the world and even
“land sailing” (aka motorhoming).
Leo and Betty Zaborsky decided to take the yacht club “plunge” in
the fall of 1987. The Zaborsky boats were said to be the fastest in the
LIYC fleet. Their most recent boat, Speedy Lopez, could make it
back to Fisherman Bay,
before most others could
pull away from the cruise
destination dock. Betty served as club Treasurer
and each year they invite members to watch the
Fourth of July fireworks from their front row Fish
Bay living room.
And we still owe Leo and Betty a big thank you for
allowing the club to mess up their yard and carport
to construct the club float entries for the Fourth of
July parade.
