Nash County Commissioner Kermit Richardson of Nashville collapsed and died of a massive heart attack Saturday night at home. He was 61.

Richardson, a minister, was ap parently working in his study when he was stricken, friends said. His wife, Lou M. Richardson, heard him fall and found his body. Rescue workers were unable to revive him.

Richardson had served on the county board since February of 1987 when he won election in Dis trict 1, one of two predominantly minority districts created under a le gal settlement that ended Nash County's at-large commissioner elections and created seven districts.

Despite supporting the contro versial school merger between Nash County and Rocky Mount systems, Richardson won easy reelection in 1992. With two years remaining in

his term, Richardson served as the county's representative to Region L Council of Governments and on Nash-Edgecombe Economic Devel opment, Inc. He had ~ecently been

appointed to the board of the Down East Partnership for Children.

"I always found him to be con scientious. I think he worked hard for what he thought was the best interest of the citizens, and he was always real lively and upbeat, a very pleasant person," said County Man ager Wayne Deal.

"It was certainly a shock to us," agreed County Chairman Claude Mayo. "Kermit has been a faithful member of the board and served his constituents well. He certainly will be missed."

The county board of commis sioners has 60 days to fill Richardson's vacant seat. By law, they will receive a recommendation from the Nash County Democratic Party executive committee, but are not bound by the nomination. The commissioners must, however, ap point a Democrat who lives within

Chairman McLain Wallace of Rocky Mount said the executive committee had already planned a meeting for next Monday. He said the group would discuss the recom mendation but would take no action until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week to give committee members more time for consider ation.

"I don't intend for us to make a decision (Monday) night," he said Tuesday. "We want to get as much input from as many people as we can. It's going to be a difficult task to replace him. We'll do the best we can.

"He was certainly a good Demo crat and a good county commis sioner," Wallace said. "I know the commissioners will miss him, and so will our party."

Richardson, who retired a few years ago from Barcalounger, was also the former pastor of the Pine Chapel Baptist Church in Hollister and the current pastor of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Louisburg. He also served on a variety of other county organizations.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Pine Chapel Baptist Church. Burial was in the Tillman-Lynch Cemetery.
