St. Irenaeus Cultural Center2811 North 2nd Street (563) 242-1201 www.clintoncountyhistoricalsocietyofiowa.orgThe building of the St. Irenaeus Cultural Center, formerly St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, began with the laying of the cornerstone on May 1, 1864 during the time Abraham Lincoln was president. This gothic cathedral was modeled after the beautiful cathedral of St. Irenaeus in France and soars over the Mississippi River in the Lyons area. Not one pillar or brace was used to support the huge ceiling. All work and construction was done by members of the parish and the sandstone was hewn from the bluffs north of the city. In 1871, the building was completed at a cost of $45,000.

Today, the building at 2811 No. 2nd Street, Clinton, is owned by the Clinton County Historical Society and is available for community use. Many events occur there during the summer months. The upper level of the building is uniquely original and tours are available for groups and individuals at any time by appointment.
