4-H Basketball Tournament– March 12, 2016

MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

Zombie Survival Class Registration is open for Zombie Survival classes! Classes will take place on Saturdays in January 16, 23, 30 and February 6,13, 20, & 27, from 1-3pm at the Frances Banta Waggoner Community Library in DeWitt. This class will teach youth survival skills for future zombie attacks and how to prepare for disasters. Questions? Please contact Natalie Oberbeck at [email protected]

Classes are open to any 6-8th grader in Clinton County and the cost is $20 per person and $10 for each additional family member participating in the classes. partnerships and research-based experiences.

Employee Spotlight Heather Coyle is the new County Director in Clinton and she has served cooperative extension in various capacities for the past 11 years. Her most recent positions have included program coordination for the University of Illinois Extension ACA Cross Campus Initiative, and grant writing/evaluation for the 21st CCLC After-School program for Sterling Rock Falls YMCA and Rock Falls School District 13. She served as Community Economic Development Educator for Whiteside County Extension through 2011, delivering CED programming for both youth and adults. Programs of note included Local Government Teleconferences, Fulton Community Swap, Morrison Youth Works, and Tomorrow’s Leaders.

Before joining Extension, she was employed for 9 years as Whiteside County Central Services Administrator. She has worked as a business instructor for displaced workers in the Quad Cities and held positions in various educational capacities in Illinois and Virginia including admissions, academic advising, and online education. She has a MBA and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Counseling from Liberty University in Virginia.

S.T.E.M. in Beef will take place on Saturday, January 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the beautiful Ellsworth Community College Agriculture and Renewable Energy Center, Iowa Falls. Youth will learn how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are involved with beef production. Cost is $5.00 per person which includes lunch. Attending this work-shop qualifies as FSQA certification! You don’t have to be a beef project member to come join the fun while learning more about raising and producing beef.

Iowa 4-H Scholarship Application—Due March 1

Are you an Iowa 4-H'er planning to attend college? Consider applying for an Iowa 4-H Scholarship. The 4-H scholarship program offers more than 100 scholarships totaling over $90,000 in financial aid for Iowa youth. Scholarships range in value from $500 to $5000.

Only ONE application form is needed for all Iowa 4-H scholarships by using the Transmittal Form. Eligible Iowa 4-H youth may apply for more than one scholarship; however, only one scholarship per individual will be awarded per year. Apply at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/scholarships

Club Financial Recordkeeping

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Clinton County Extension will be collecting gently used jeans for the homeless and foster teens of Clinton County. All jeans will be given to the Victory Center Rescue Mission in Clinton. All sizes and gender styles are needed. Teens, and your newly found space in your dresser, will thank you!

All 4-H Clubs and chartered groups must have their financial accounts audited annually. Federal regulations governing the use of the 4-H Name and Emblem require financial accountability of all 4-H Clubs and Groups. Funds raised in the name of 4-H must be publically accountable and must be used for 4-H educational purposes. Failure to annually submit the financial report could result in the loss of the 4-H Charter and use of 4-H Name and Emblem.

All financial records (treasure books*, bank statements, ledgers, spreadsheets, receipts, etc.) are to be turned in to the Clinton County Extension Office by October, 2016. The 2016 Iowa 4-H Foundation scholarship applications are now available online and can be found at www.iowa4hfoundation.org/scholarships. There are four separate applications: Incoming Freshman, Current College Students, Hills Bank and Trust Company Leadership Grant, and Iowa 4-H Veterinary Medicine Scholarships.

All applications and supporting materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. February 1, 2016. Applicants will have the ability to save and return to the application as many times as needed. Supporting documents with instructions and helpful hints are posted as well. 4-H Bucket Bottle Workshop— February 22

All market beef project information has been entered in 4hOnline. Please log in and verify your Market Beef are entered in 4hOnline and all information is complete and correct by February 1, 2016. All market beef projects need to be verified in 4hOnline, including county-fair-only animals.

If your animal is registered, the tattoo and registration number must be entered in 4hOnline in order to be eligible to show in a breed class. Please contact Brianne Johnson at the Clinton County Extension Office at (563) 659-5125 with questions.

Training will take place at the Extension 4-H Youth building at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Be a part of the FUN and Learning! This FREE Retreat is designed as a train-the-trainer event, and participants are encouraged to use information from the sessions to teach 4-H members in their clubs and counties. The deadline to register is Friday, January 22. Friday evening's focus is on learning about new, hands on activities that your club could develop into service projects.

Saturday morning workshops meet at the Memorial Union and the afternoon sessions will be either at the Extension 4-H Youth Building or in labs across the ISU campus. The annual State Volunteer Retreat is planned and implemented by a committee of 4-H volunteers and sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H. 2016 4-H State Volunteer Retreat– February 5-6

Food Safety Quality Assurance Certification F.S.Q.A. stands for Food Safety Quality Assurance. This program helps 4-H producers understand their role in producing safe food, and helps them to make wise, ethical decisions related to food production. If you exhibit the following project(s) you are required to be FSQA certified: Beef, Bucket Bottle, Dairy, Goat, Swine, Sheep, Rabbit (if it is not a pet project) and Poultry. You MUST become FSQA certified to exhibit your animal at the County Fair or at the Iowa State Fair. Youth in 4th-6th grade must re-certify annually by attending a youth FSQA education program. Youth in 7th-12th grade may certify and recertify annually by attending a youth FSQA education program OR may test out at the appropriate age level for their age bracket. To test out, contact the Extension Office and set up a time to take

the test. Once certified by a test, the youth is not required to recertify until the next age bracket is reached. FSQA Training will be held: 1. The Clinton County 4-H Bucket Bottle Superintendent, Linda Wiese, is hosting a workshop at the Clinton County Extension Office on February 22 at 6:30pm. This workshop is directed

Citizenship Washington Focus Trip

Clinton County Fair Swine Building Renovation

The Clinton County Fair board and Fair Swine Committee are making progress to renovate the swine barn facilities and add an Agricultural Educational Learning Center to the Clinton County Fairgrounds in DeWitt, Iowa. As of December 2015, cash donations and pledges totaled nearly half of the anticipated expenses. This project will take some major fundraising to accomplish and we look to both businesses and private support to accomplish this goal.

The original barn was constructed in the 1940’s and is now outdated and deteriorated to a point that may soon be unsafe to use. Furthermore, it is not easily accessible and we have outgrown the facility as youth participation has increased dramatically. The number of youth exhibiting swine at the fair has continually increased over the past five years and we are optimistic about future involvement and continued growth. The Clinton County Fair is collecting donations for the building.

The Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a nine-day trip for 4-H youth in 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The 2016 trip will take place June 10– 18. The trip provides a setting to experience leadership and citizenship in a whole different way at the National 4-H Center. Some highlights of the trip are: Lincoln’s Springfield, Gettysburg Battlefield, Capitol Hill, Smithsonian Museums, Mount Vernon and Kennedy Center. Beside tours and workshops, there will be time for socializing and meeting new friends. Deadline to register is January 4, 2016. Trip cost is $1,570 which pays for all lodging, travel, tours and a majority of your meals. A $510 non-refundable deposit is due at time of registration. The remaining balance is two payments of $530 each and is due February 15 and April 1, 2016. The Clinton County 4-H Endowment offers significant financial assistance to participants. AgDiscovery is a two-week residential program for high school students ages 15-17. Admission to the program is highly competitive and open to youths from across the USA. Students learn about the interconnections among wildlife biology and conservation, laboratory technology and diagnostics, animal science, and veterinary medicine. Every student has hands-on experiences on the farm, in wildlife environments and in the

Iowa Lifts Bans of Poultry Exhibitions The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced on December 29 that the order canceling all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the Iowa State Fair, livestock auction markets, swap meets, exotic sales and other gatherings of birds due to avian influenza will be lifted on January 1, 2016. "This is very good news and another sign that we continue to recover from this devastating animal health emergency. We know the ban on exhibitions caused some real challenges for those anticipating showing or selling birds, but we appreciate everyone cooperating as we worked to stop the disease and then allow the industry to recover," said Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. The Department issued the order prohibiting poultry exhibitions on May 21 in the midst of the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The ban was put into place to minimize spread of HPAI and protect the state's domestic bird population. Lifting the poultry exhibition ban comes as a result of no new cases of HPAI in Iowa since June and the lifting of the final quarantine on December 1. Iowa is now considered free of HPAI.

Total of 77 premises and 31.5 million birds were affected with the disease in Iowa. Eastern Iowa 4-H Project Workshop—April 16, 2016

Each 4-H and Clover Kids Club is required to submit a yearly club program to 4-H Program Manager, Brianne Johnson by email at [email protected] or by sending to the Clinton County Extension office by January 1. Yearly Club Programs will be reviewed and authorized by Extension staff. If a club wishes to add an event/trip/workshop to their program, they must notify Extension staff before doing so to ensure that risks are being managed properly. Special activity insurance is available
