Open Studies • CTN 0037 – STRIDE (Stimulant Reduction

Intervention using Dosed Exercise) Enrolled 302 (N=300). Enrollment completed – in follow up phase.

• CTN 0047 – SMART-ED (Screening, Motivational Assessment, Referral, and Treatment in Emergency Departments) Enrolled 1,285 (N=1,285). Enrollment completed – in follow up phase.

• CTN 0048 – CURB (Cocaine Use Reduction with Buprenorphine). Enrolled 302 (N=300). Enrollment completed – in follow up phase.

• CTN 0049 – Project HOPE (Hospital Visit as Opportunity for Prevention and Engagement for HIV-Infected Drug Users). Enrolled 271 (N=800).

• CTN 0050 – Long Term Follow-up to the CTN 0027 (START) Study. Enrolled 758 (N=1,267).

• CTN 0052 – BRAC (Buspirone for Relapse-Prevention in Adults with Cocaine Dependence). Enrolled 49 (N=60). Total Enrolled All Studies: 15,633

CTN Scientific Poster Session

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) members pride themselves on sharing results, experiences, techniques, and observations from their scientific trials. Numerous CTN posters have been presented at national meetings over the past year. The CTN applauds the

efforts of its members and encourages the sharing and transferring of information. In order to maximize the impact of these valuable lessons, members who have presented posters since January 2012 are encouraged to consider displaying them at the March 2013 Steering Committee (SC) Meeting. CTNers who are interested in displaying a poster should contact Asmaa Ahmed at [email protected] with the poster title, author(s), and meeting that the poster was presented at by February 22, 2013. Nearly a dozen posters have already been submitted. A listing of the approved poster titles and authors will be included in the next Bulletin.

part of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services.

NIDA National Drug Facts Week NIDA’s National Drug Facts Week (NDFW) is a weeklong event for teens to get answers on drugs and drug abuse from scientific experts. There are numerous

community based events and activities on the web, television, and through contests. This year’s NDFW began on January 28th with more than 500 events registered from around the country, breaking records from previous years. For the first time, events are being held in all 50 states. March SC Meeting Symposiums The Minority Interest Group and Gender Interest Group are planning exciting presentations to discuss CTN study results addressing minorities, health disparities, and

gender differences at the upcoming March Steering Committee meetings. An International Grant Writing workshop and symposium will be presented as well on March 14, 2013. See the attached flyers for all three symposiums. International Collaborators at SC Meeting

This year, many international collaborators and guests will attend the March Steering Committee Meeting. Visitors from several countries will participate in the grant writing

workshop, followed by a symposium on March 14, 2013.

To support travel of junior investigators from Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research is providing travel awards for trainees (post-doctoral fellows), new investigators, and knowledge users to attend this meeting. Election Results! RDC Update The votes are in – congratulations to the following elected members of the CTN Research Development Committee! Pacific Region Node News The Pacific Region Node’s Regional Dissemination

Conference will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the California Endowment Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles. The conference is sponsored by the CTN’s Pacific Region Node, Pacific Southwest Addiction

Technology Transfer Center, and UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs. The conference will include researchers who will present in the areas of HIV, HCV, Dual Diagnosis, Pain and Addiction, Opioid Dependence, and Criminal Justice. Spots are limited, but registration is open to all interested individuals. Southern Consortium (SC) Node News Over the past year, the Southern Consortium Node has had the privilege of hosting Effat Merghati-khoei, Ph.D., a recipient of a 2010 NIDA INVEST Research Fellowship. During her time

at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Merghati-khoei has successfully focused on expanding her knowledge in addiction research and treatment. Her work has enabled her to return to her home in Tehran, Iran, to pursue her own research on sexual risk behaviors in women with substance use disorders. The SC Node is looking forward to continuing a collaborative relationship with Dr. Merghati-khoei to help her achieve her research goals and to bring the experimental and clinical techniques learned at MUSC to bear on her ongoing work with women in Iran. The SC Node wishes her all the best in her future research. Sad News – Greater New York Node

The Greater New York Node sadly announces the passing of Ira J. Marion from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Ira dedicated his life for over 40 years to help expand medication assisted treatment for a generation

of individuals with substance use disorders. He helped to build and grow the Division of Substance Abuse, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he served for 30 years as the Assistant Executive Director and then the Executive Director. He was the first and most recent Board President of the New York State Association of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers (ASAP), and was a strong supporter of the CTN. All who knew Ira saw his passion and dedication to the field, and colleagues, friends, and all those whose lives he touched will miss him.

2012 CTN Dissemination Library by the Numbers In 2012, visitors to the CTN Dissemination Library and the use of information resources like the “What’s New” blog and Facebook page increased. A YouTube channel was added in June to house videos from CCC (Clinical Coordinating Center at EMMES) webinars – making those recordings easy to watch right on the Library’s web site! Coming in early 2013 is a new CEU package titled “Accelerating Knowledge Exchange in Substance Abuse Treatment.” This package, featuring videos from the April 2012 “Mini-Blending” conference in Atlanta, Georgia,

and a short quiz, will be available in February 2013 to counselors and others. The CTN Dissemination Library is maintained by the Pacific Northwest Node of the Clinical Trials Network. CTN Research Utilization Committee The CTN Research Utilization Committee (RUC) meets monthly to discuss the adoption of CTN-tested and successful interventions within the CTN, development of dissemination projects,

tracking of dissemination activities within the CTN, and promotion of dissemination research using CTN as a platform. On their January call, the RUC discussed several upcoming regional dissemination conferences and training opportunities including: • Pacific Northwest Node – Co-Occurring Disorders

on February 8, 2013, in Spokane, Washington. • Mid-Atlantic Node – The Use of Technology within

the Research Field on March 8, 2013. • Ohio Valley Node – Medication Assisted Treatment

in North Dakota on April 26-27, 2013. • Texas Node – Regional Dissemination Conference

on April 26, 2013. The RUC also met with representatives from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital. CAMH representatives discussed research and dissemination and adoption of evidence-based practices in Canada. Follow-up conversations are planned to explore the possibility of future collaboration.
