Climate is not weather !
• Climate- the average pattern of weather in a place.
• Weather- is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time measured in terms of such things as wind, temperature, humidity, cloudiness, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure.
How the oceans influence climate
Heat re-distribution (keeps Europe warm)
Monsoons, Cyclones,El Nino
Upwelling can create coastal deserts on land
Great thermal buffer (high heat capacity)
Oceans absorb ~1/3 of anthropogenic CO2
Warm ocean temperature
Counter current of pacific ocean
Spanish word El-Nino means “little boy”
It happens at 3-7 year interval
Lasts for 9 months to 2 years
ENSO Impacts Droughts (e.g. Australia, Africa,
Brazil, Indonesia)
Floods (e.g. Peru, southern
USA)
La -Nino
Anti-El-Nino
cold ocean temperature
Cold current of pacific ocean
Spanish word El-Nino means “little girl”
It happens after El-Nino
Lasts for 2-3 months
• Higher biological productivity
• Cooler than normal seawater
• Stronger upwelling
• Stronger trade winds
• Shallower thermocline
Impacts
Lets see Monsoon
Monsoon is derived form the Arabic word
“Mausim” meaning “season”.
It was first used by Arabic navigators
To describe the seasonal winds of the Arabian sea.
• Monsoon is a seasonal wind
• Comes from both Northeast & Southwest region of the world
• This seasonal wind affects the Indian ocean gyre
• Indian ocean is the
only one ocean of the world which gyre is affected by monsoon Northern Hemisphere Summer
