Latitude is the distance north or south of the equator.

As latitude increases, the intensity of solar energy decreases.

The region, between about 23.5°N (Tropic of Cancer) to about 23.5°S (Tropic of Capricorn), is called the tropics or the tropical zone.

Temperatures in the tropical zone are generally warm year-round.

In the temperate zones, between about 23.5° and 66.5° north and south of the equator, the sun’s energy strikes Earth at a smaller angle than near the equator.
