The Inspiration

Page 3: Climate-Induced Art: Communicating Climate Change Science Through Artistic Media Amanda Ziegler OCN 750 Project

Goals

1. Teaching– Future faculty?– Other employment

options– Educate the next

generation of scientists

2. Science communication– Make climate change

science accessible– Present science in

creative ways– Inspire!

3. Outreach– Involve community– Expand impact of science

and related research

Step 1: The Plan

• Develop climate change themed art projects for

children grades 4-8

• Create basic climate change science materials to

accompany art projects

• Communicate my own research through Antarctic

photography book and photos I work with

Page 5: Climate-Induced Art: Communicating Climate Change Science Through Artistic Media Amanda Ziegler OCN 750 Project

Step 2: Attend Outreach Event

• STEM event at Leilehua High School for families

• Climate change mosaic, wind turbine pinwheels

• Information and art at booth

Page 6: Climate-Induced Art: Communicating Climate Change Science Through Artistic Media Amanda Ziegler OCN 750 Project

Step 3: Evaluate and Improve

• Format difficult to maintain attention

• Students knew very little about climate change

• Excited about Antarctic photos and learning what the animals were

• Practice!

Manoa Experience

Future?

• Incorporate what I learned into my teaching and outreach

• Broader impacts ideas

• Improved science communication skills and gained outreach experience

• Keeping employment options open
