Spring Seminar

Climate Change

• Change of Climate across the globe

• Can be caused by man or natural swings in Ocean currents

• Affects the environment

Page 3: Climate Change in the Environment By Group 2 Of the Helena PEAK GT6-7 Spring Seminar.

Causes of Climate Change

• Man: greenhouse gases released into the environment cause the greenhouse effect

• Natural: melting ice dilutes ocean salt water stopping the currents. This cools off the northern hemisphere creating an ice age. Then the salt to water ratio is back in place the currents start again and the north warms up starting the cycle over.

Climate Change’s effects on the environment

• Glaciers

• Pine trees and forests

• Arctic and Antarctic habitats

• Rise in sea levels

• What can we do?

Glaciers

Advancement is when the amount of snowfall is greater than the amount of

melting and a glacier grows.

ADVANCEMENT

Glaciers

Recession is when the amount of snowfall is less than the amount of melting and the

glacier shrinks.

Climate Changes effects on Glaciers

Climate Change is causing glaciers to MELT, ablation.

Pine Beetles

Pine Beetles are now able to go higher up in elevation and go further north. This is causing an increase in diseased and dead trees. Winters are also not cold enough to kill almost all the beetles and stop the trees from dying.

Pine Beetles

The beetles are going to die if they keep eating those trees because then they will have nothing to eat.

Antarctic habitats

• If Climate Change continues valuable Antarctic habitats will be lost and the animals that live in them.

Arctic Habitats

• The arctic is not made on dry land, it’s just a floating ice sheet. If it were to melt polar bears would be forced on to dry land.

Page 21: Climate Change in the Environment By Group 2 Of the Helena PEAK GT6-7 Spring Seminar.

Rise in Sea Level

• Ice melting in Arctic areas and on mountains will cause a rise in sea level, flooding many coastal areas, such as Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and others.

Rise in Sea Level

• This can cause many deaths and land loss, resulting in even more overcrowding, and hurting the environment on land. Also, if animals do not get away from the water fast enough they could die also.
