MELTING GLACIERS

The glaciers are like natural dams. They store the snow in the wet season and they melt in the dry season and bring water flow to the rivers.

Melting could have serious repercussions for drinking water supply, crop irrigation, hydroelectric production and tourism.

A short-term problem is Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (Glof), the result of shrinking glaciers and melting ice that causes lakes to grow and breach loose moraine walls, sending huge floods of water, mud and boulders downstream.
