Climate Change

is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time. Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-

term average conditions .

Is climate change real?

Is climate change man

made or just a natural

occurence? These are

just few questions that

can be asked as we

talked about climate

change. 1

Climate change is one of the most current worldwide issues. Some experts say that it is true that Earth does go through a period of cooling and a period of warming. The increase of temperature that we are experiencing right now is caused by factors other than human activity. Another point of vie

w is that the increase of Earth’s temperature is brought about by human i

ntervention.

Page 5: Climate change

Whether the cause is man-made or not, cl

imate change is a change in the environm

ent. Global warming can bring about a ris

ing of sea level due to the melting of ice c

aps and glaciers. We may experience sev

ere weather disturbances such as much s

tronger typhoons and heavier rainfalls. S

ome parts of the world may experience El

Niño or La Niña. And most of all, it can ca

use extinction of some fauna and flora.

WHAT IS

GREENHOUSE

EFFECT ?

Page 7: Climate change

Greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.

Page 8: Climate change
Page 9: Climate change

Gases that contribute to

the greenhouse effect

include:

Page 10: Climate change

Water vapor. The most abundant greenhouse gas, but importantly, it acts as a feedback to the climate.

•Carbon dioxide (CO2). A minor but very important component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels.

Page 11: Climate change

•Methane. A hydrocarbon gas produced both through natural sources and human activities, including the decomposition of wastes in landfills, agriculture, and especially rice cultivation, as well as ruminant digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock.•Nitrous oxide. A powerful greenhouse gas produced by soil cultivation practices, especially the use of commercial and organic fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion, nitric acid production, and biomass burning.

Page 12: Climate change

•Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Synthetic compounds entirely of industrial origin used in a number of applications, but now largely regulated in production and release to the atmosphere by international agreement for their ability to contribute to destruction of the ozone layer.

Two Categories : Those are due to natural causes Those that are created by man.

Effects of Climate Change

Page 25: Climate change

•Sea level is rising•Arctic sea ice is melting•Glaciers and permafrost are melting•Sea surface temperatures are warming.

Page 26: Climate change

•Temperatures of large lakes are warming•Heavier rainfall cause flooding in many regions•Extreme drought is increasing•Crops are withering.

Page 27: Climate change

•Ecosystems are changing

•Hurricanes have changed in frequency and strength

Warmer temperatures affect human healthSeawater is becoming more acidic
