Veteran Peer-to-Peer Mentoring ProgramSARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Board of Su-pervisors is proud to announce a new program aimed at Vet-erans who are interested in having a mentoring relationship with another Veteran. This program aims to match Veterans with other Veterans who have similar interests, goals, or life experiences. If you are someone who is attempting to get re-acclimated to civilian life, and looking for some extra help with the transition we would love to talk to you! Our mission is to design, implement and evaluate a Saratoga County based peer-to-peer support program for veterans who are experienc-ing post-traumatic stress symptoms. We do this by providing: outreach, education, access to local resources, peer to peer re-lationships, a sense of hope, help with building resiliency, tools for family and community connectedness, and access to suicide prevention/intervention measures. Please call 518-884-4999 to get connected. This is a FREE program, and ALL Veterans are welcome. If you are someone who is interested in mentoring another Veteran and you think you have time and experience to offer, please call 518-884-4999 as well, and we will be happy to speak with you. Training is free and appropriate reimbursement is available. (P)

History Of The Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. Al-though St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, many people assume the role of being Irish for the day and participate in the revelry of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these revelers cel-ebrate without fully under-standing the man behind the holiday.

Despite having such strong links to Ireland, St. Patrick did not begin his life on the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in Britain in the fourth century. His given name was Maewyn. His father was a Christian deacon, but there is no evidence that theirs was a particularly religious family. It is surmised that the role of deacon was more for tax benefits rather than a holy calling. Some history suggests that Patrick considered himself a pagan in the early years of his life. At age 16, after being taken to Ireland as a prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate, Patrick began rethinking his religious beliefs.

While working alone as a shepherd, he turned to religion for solace and adopted the name Patrick. He began dreaming of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captiv-ity. According to his historical writings, he heard a voice in a dream, which he believed to be God. God told him it was time to leave Ireland.

Patrick escaped his captivity after six years by walking 200 miles to the Irish coast. He boarded a ship and fled back to Brit-ain. Patrick had another holy revelation that he was to return to Ireland as a missionary. To prepare, he began to study at a

monastery under the authority of St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years. He was ordained a minister and traveled back to Ireland with the purpose of assisting Christians already living in Ireland and to converting the Irish to Christianity.

Patrick had an intimate knowledge of Irish culture due to his captivity. He was also familiar with traditional rituals. Therefore, instead of trying to remove all that was customary to the Irish people, he began working some of their rituals into his Christian teachings so they would seem more natural to the Irish. He managed to convert many pagans, and he and his disciples preached and converted many more. Patrick helped to build churches all over Ireland.

By the end of Patrick’s life, the majority of Ireland embraced Christianity. He lived the life of a wanderer and endured much suffering and poverty. Patrick died March 17, 461.

What Is Corned Beef? At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part.

Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times

Because the Irish descended from a long line of storytell-ers who had a rich tradition of oral legend and myth, there are many tales of Patrick that abound, many of which are untrue. He did not scare ac-tual snakes out of Ireland nor did he take part in many of the embellished tales. He did succeed in making a big his-torical impact, which is why he entered into sainthood and had the date of March 17 es-tablished in his honor.

when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.

Corned beef brines today con-tain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

Engineering Field Sees Low Unemployment, Higher Pay (NewsUSA) - When faced with an intimidating job market and sizeable student loans, stu-dents must give serious thought to which college degrees will help ensure a job with a substantial salary.

While the phrases "guarantee a job" and "substantial salary" are nearing extinction, job reports and salary trends indicate a few reliable, profitable and in-demand careers. Most notably, engi-neering.

Engineering is consistently listed in CNN's "Best Jobs in America," and it's a top-paying field that reports high worker satisfaction. What's even more promising? Data from 2012 show that engineering salaries are rising.

"Engineering continues to be one of the most robust professions," says Thomas G. Loughlin, executive director of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). "It's one that offers immense gratification along with concrete economic benefits. The unemployment rate among engineers is currently about half the national average."

Loughlin isn't understating when he says, "economic benefits." The Huffington Post rounded up the top 15 college majors with the highest pay, and eight of the 15 were engineering degrees.

The "2012 Engineering Income and Salary Survey" conducted by ASME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) revealed that nearly 72 percent of those surveyed received a salary increase. In 2012, engineers earned an average income of $103,497 -- a four percent rise from last year.

Whether in response to the promising salary or President Obama's push for more engineers in the American Jobs Act of 2011, some colleges are seeing more engineering degrees. A New Hampshire report on higher education said the greatest growth was seen in the field of engineer-ing in the past five years.

The recent surge can't come at a better time as public and private companies need more

engineering graduates from American schools. The U.S. still produces fewer engineers than other nations, roughly 70,000 American engineers compared to 600,000 and 350,000 from China and India, respectively. Since more education means higher pay, engineering colleges will likely stay on the upward trend.

To be frank, the field of engineering isn't going anywhere but up. Learn more at www.asme.org.

Things To Know About Motor Oil When it comes to taking care of their vehicles, many motorists prefer to be overly cautious. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when being too cautious can unnecessar-ily cost you money.

Motor oil, and when to change that oil, has long been a point of contention. Many drivers grew up being told that motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of today’s vehicles, which should come with suggested intervals between oil changes. According to Edmunds.com, in 2010 the average interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles. In addition to changing a car’s motor oil less

frequently, there are other things drivers should know about motor oil.

* Oil does not necessarily need to be changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it’s good to have your car examined before embarking, if the recommended oil change interval is not up, then you do not need to preemptively change your oil. Such a change is likely unnecessary and will not improve the performance of your vehicle during the trip.

* Black oil does not necessitate a change. Conventional wis-dom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then it needs to be changed. But nowadays automotive professionals are noting that black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oil’s color, which means the oil doesn’t need to be changed.

* You can use petroleum-based oil after using synthetic. Anoth-er longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleum-based oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional motor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switch-ing back and forth from one to the other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

* Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Labora-tories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines dur-ing their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recom-mend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive in their break-in oil and advises against changing their oil early. Consult your owner’s manual to determine if it’s best to change your oil after the initial 3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

Daytime Visibility Just As Important As Nighttime Visibility(MS) -- Visibility is something many motorists take for grant-ed, especially during the day, when sunlight tends to make driv-ers less cautious than they might be at night. But as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes, more traffic ac-cidents occur during daylight hours than at night, when head-lights make vehicles more visible to other motorists and more pedestrians are walking around.

Though many drivers feel more comfortable during daylight hours, pedestrians and oncoming traffic are not always easy to see, especially when weather and road conditions are unfavor-able. Fortunately, there are easy ways for drivers to improve their daytime visibility.

* Install LED daytime running lights. Being seen while driving in the daytime is just as essential for a driver’s safety as be-ing able to see when driving at night. Daytime running lights, or DRLs, are an effective way of improving visibility because

they make the vehicle more detectable during daylight hours and dusk, when a motorist’s visibility is reduced. Studies have shown that DRLs reduce multiple-vehicle daytime accidents by as much as 11 percent, effectively preventing daytime head-on and front-corner collisions by making it easier to see a vehicle, particularly as it approaches from far away.

Some cars have daytime running lights based off their head-lamps. These are not very bright and can ultimately cause the lamps to wear out prematurely. Philips LED DayLight DRLs are equipped with high-powered

LUXEON® LEDs that project a powerful, bright white light and a wide beam, making a vehicle more visible to fellow motorists as well as pedestrians. In addition, the Philips LED DRLs al-low drivers to switch from using their standard headlights to an LED light source during the daytime, extending the life of the headlights while drawing less power from the vehicle.

* Routinely check windshield washer fluid. Some vehicles have just one reservoir for windshield washer fluid, while oth-ers equipped with a rear wiper typically have two. Locate these reservoirs and make sure there is an adequate amount of fluid in each, especially during the winter and early spring months when snow and debris such as sand or salt from the roadways can accumulate on the windshield and make it difficult to see. If the reservoir is empty, but you are out of windshield washer fluid, do not use water as a replacement, as water can freeze and cause damage to the reservoir and hoses.

* Inspect wipers and replace the blades if they are sacrificing visibility. Old or worn out wiper blades can also negatively im-pact visibility. Ford Motor Company recommends drivers in-spect their vehicle’s wiper blades at least once every six months or as soon as they fail to clear your windshield completely or leave streaks. Older vehicles with pitting on the windshield tend to be harder on wiper blades, so drivers who have cars with some extra years under their belt should inspect their blades more frequently.

* Clean interior glass and mirrors. Interior glass can suffer from film buildup that can reduce a driver’s vision, especially during daytime hours when such buildup can create a hazy reflection from the sun. This film can be especially thick in cars where drivers or their passengers routinely smoke.

In addition to cleaning the interior glass, keep the rearview and side mirrors clean and properly adjusted so your vision is not compromised while driving. Drivers should be able to see all of the views around the back of the car, especially the blind spots along both sides of the vehicle. When cleaning or adjusting the rearview mirror, remove any trinkets or other items hanging from the mirror. Such items might add some personality or aes-thetic appeal, but they can also prove a significant distraction and make it difficult for drivers to see the road.

Philips LED Daylight DRLs improve safety by increasing visibility to other drivers while adding style with the look of high performance.

Road Trip Tips For Spring DriversSpring is a season of rebirth for many people, who wel-come the warm weather with open arms, especially those who just endured a harsh win-ter. Spending time outdoors when the weather warms up is a popular pastime for many people each spring.

Road trips taken by college kids or high schoolers hit-ting the road for spring break or professionals and parents packing up the car for a week-end getaway have become synonymous with spring. A road trip is a great way to get outdoors and make the most of a warm day, but there are a few tricks of the trade driv-ers can employ to ensure their road trips are as enjoyable as possible.

* Give your car a good wash. Drivers who live in areas with heavy snowfall should give their vehicles a thorough cleaning before hitting the road for a spring road trip. Salt and sand can build up on a vehicle over the course of a snowy winter, so a power washing will help remove excess salt, sand or dirt and help the car run more smoothly.

* Get the vehicle a tune-up. A tune-up, including an oil change, should be part of your pre-trip planning. Make sure winter hasn’t caused any damage to the vehi-cle’s body and ask your mechanic to perform a thorough inspection of the vehicle’s suspension and brakes. If any problems arise, ad-dress them before embarking on your road trip.

* Subscribe to a roadside assis-tance program. Roadside assis-tance programs, whether it’s AAA or a program offered through your insurance company, provide

a measure of security to road-trippers. Many roadside assistance programs provide variety of emergency assistance for members, including:

- towing service if your vehicle cannot start or operate safely,

- battery service if your car’s battery needs a jump,

- flat tire service if you get a flat tire and don’t have a spare or cannot change the tire yourself,

- fuel delivery service if your car runs out of gas, and

- lockout service if you lock your keys in the car.

These services can act as a safety net should an issue arise when you’re on the road and far away from home or far away from a service station. Keep your membership card in your wallet and store their customer service number in your cellular phone should you accidentally lose your membership card or lock it inside your car.

* Bring cash as well as credit cards on the trip. When embarking on a road trip, don’t assume you will have ready access to an ATM on your trip or at your destination. This means you may reach a point when you have no cash on hand. While it’s a good idea to bring some cash along on the trip, bring a credit card or cards as well should you find yourself with no cash. A major credit card, such as a Mastercard, American Express or Visa, is likely to be accepted at most filling stations.

* Invest in a road navigation system. A road navigation system can be your best friend, helping you find your way in places with which you are unfamiliar. Road navigation systems can alert you to traffic conditions while providing directions and alternate routes. Some systems will even alert you to nearby filling stations, lodging or restaurants.

A road navigation system is a good investment for drivers about to embark on a road trip.
