What is it?

• Electronic Mail

• You can access your email from anywhere as long as you can connect to the internet

Page 3: Click your mouse or use the space bar to proceed through ...db.apl.org/comp/gmail_ALL-Instructions.pdf · (if you have a Gmail account) – If your account is fluffy-puppies@gmail.com

How does it work?• You have your own space on a company’s

computer (depending on through whom you open your email account)

– Gmail (Google owns Gmail; this is what we’re using)

– Hotmail /

– Yahoo!

– SBC Global, etc…

Page 4: Click your mouse or use the space bar to proceed through ...db.apl.org/comp/gmail_ALL-Instructions.pdf · (if you have a Gmail account) – If your account is fluffy-puppies@gmail.com

Why do I log in?• Logging in is what lets you get to your

“space” on one of the huge computers at Google (if you have a Gmail account)

– If your account is [email protected] no one else can use that name/address

– When people send mail to your email address, the message goes into your space on Google’s gmail computer (where you can then find it and read it)

This screen is what you see when you login to Gmail.

You are looking at the Inbox --- where emails that were sent to you are listed.

Create a “Distribution List” so you can send a message to a standard group of people (you’ll select the list rather than have to

choose each person’s address one by one. Your email account remembers who the members are).

Works like a Christmas mailing list that automatically addresses all your envelopes with the people on your Christmas list.

I’ve added two more contacts…

To: type the email addresses of the person/people to whom you are sending a message (it’s like writing the address on an envelope)

Cc: Carbon Copy -- sends a copy of the email message to another person who has interest in the email (for example, Cc your supervisor so she’s up-to-date on a project meeting that is being planned, even though the message is to your project partners). These addresses will show up to everyone who gets the email.

Bcc: Blind Carbon Copy -- hides the email addresses to whom the message is sent. If you like to send group emails, always put the email addresses in Bcc so you’re not giving out your friends’ and family’s email address.

•You can see the attachment listed above.

•The message shows up when I click on “Sent Mail.” That is because this is a message that I sent to someone (myself), and sent messages are kept in Sent Mail.

• Since I sent the message to my own email address, it also shows up in my Inbox --- where all emails sent to me will be listed.

• Now I’ll open the email that I sent to myself, and we’ll see the message and where to open the attachment.

• I open it by clicking on the title of the email (Composing a new email)

Mark as unread – make it look like you haven’t read the message

Add Star – visual reminder that you want to do something with that message

Filter messages like these – have certain messages that fit a certain criteria treated a certain way

(Mute – messages on a certain topic that you don’t care about bypass the Inbox)

Apply Label / New Label – label a message as being about something so you can find it later. (You can use more than one: for example, label a message both Funny and Family if a family member sent you a funny story that you want to save.)
