• In order to include sound you should also know how to use layers in Flash

• A layer is best imagined as a transparent film on which you can draw or place things like pictures or sounds

• Layers are visible on the timeline – the default layer is automatically set up as Layer 1

• You can rename your layers by double clicking the title and typing in your own name

• You can then insert visuals or sounds in that layer

• To insert a new layer, go to the Insert menu choice and choose the Layer option

• Then rename your layer to reflect its contents

• Layers can be made invisible by clicking on the dot underneath the eye.

• The advantage of doing this is that you can work on the layer underneath without having the stuff on the first layer visible

• You can also lock a layer after you have finished working on it so that you don’t inadvertently change something you had set up correctly

• To insert sound it is customary to set it up in its own layer

• Go to the File menu and the Import choice

• When you get the dialogue box, make sure the file type on the bottom line reads “All sound formats”

• If it doesn’t drop the list of formats down and choose the “All sound formats” choice

• Now find the sound file you want.

• These sound formats can be sound you have taken off the web or recorded yourself

• .wav sounds and .mp3 are common formats handled by Flash

• Choose the sound you want and say OK

• The sound is inserted into the frame you were currently in but that means the sound will start playing when the movie gets to that frame and continue until the sound finishes

• If you insert another keyframe farther down the timeline you will see a sound wave in the sound layer you chose which represents the sound.

• Sounds in their own layer can start anywhere in the movie that you want

• also remember, they will end when they have finished playing and not necessarily when the movie ends.
