INTRODUCTION TO DSL

What is DSL?

DSL (digital subscriber line) allows high-speed data access over a standard phone line, also known as a POTS (plain old telephone system) line or a twisted copper pair. Since it works over existing telephone lines, DSL high-speed Internet access is very affordable, and its speed is ideal for home office applications and multi-player gaming.

How does DSL work?

DSL modems use digital coding, allowing as much as 99% more capacity on a normal phone line, without affecting your normal telephone service. This increase in capacity allows you to surf the Internet and talk on the telephone or send a fax - at the same time - without a separate telephone line.

Will DSL affect my normal phone service?

It is recommended that you have a phone filter on every phone device connected to your phone line, except your DSL modem, to minimize the possibility of static on your phone line.

Nauticom provides phone filters at no additional charge.

Phone devices include: Standard phones Wall phones Dial-up modems Fax machines Answering machines Caller ID boxes Any other equipment attached to the phone line

If you have a home security system or phone system, contact Nauticom for direction. Specific precautionary measures must be taken to ensure that your home security system is not affected by the DSL signal, and that it will not interfere with the DSL signal. Security system services require that systems be tested any time a change is made to your phone line. Your system should be tested with the assistance of the security service following the DSL installation.

What if I have multi-line phones in my home?

In houses that have jacks wired for multiple phone lines, DSL must be installed on the first line of a multiple line phone jack. In-line filters will not function properly on the second or third lines of multi-line jacks.

We recommend you contact your local telephone company to discuss DSL networking solutions if you currently have multi-line phones in your house or are considering purchasing multi-line phones.

What are the advantages of DSL?

No second phone line required - simultaneous Internet and voice/fax capabilities over a single telephone line

Uninterrupted, high-speed Internet access which is always on-line Cost-effective solution for residential customers, small businesses, and home offices Data security that exceeds similar technologies Reliability of telephone service connectivity Stability of pricing structure Static global Internet address Nauticom provides professional, home-town Internet access In-house Technical Support, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week

RESIDENTIAL DSL RESTRICTIONS

Nauticom Residential DSL Subscribers agree not to host any server in conjunction with DSL connectivity. In the event that a subscriber attempts to host a server on the Nauticom network, without consent from Nauticom Systems Administration and/or in the absence of a signed Nauticom Business contract, Nauticom may suspend/terminate DSL services and/or increase fees associated with the user's DSL agreement without notice. Exceptions to this policy may be granted assuming that the subscriber makes his request in writing, listing the following details:

Software to be installed and run on server. Purpose of server (testing, educational, telecommuting to office, etc.). Statement that any server connected to said DSL line will not be used:

To run any business or gain any profit With the intent to allow open mail relay With the intent to distribute unsolicited mass email (spam) To run an open proxy server In a manner which consumes an excessive amount of bandwidth on

Nauticom's network and/or systems as determined by Nauticom at its sole discretion.

The subscriber agrees that Nauticom may request at its discretion, at any time during the length of service, the removal of any server or system connected to the DSL line. This request may be made verbally or in writing.

If said request is not responded to within the requested time period or if Nauticom is unable to contact the subscriber to make said request, Nauticom may, at its discretion, suspend DSL access immediately. If service is suspended, reactivation of service may take up to 2 weeks. Nauticom is not liable for any monetary loss resulting from suspension of service. All requests may be sent via email to [email protected].

PROTECT YOUR PC

Install and regularly update [check for updates daily] antivirus software. Scan your hard drive [weekly at minimum].

Antivirus software helps to keep your computer free of infection from viruses, worms, and Trojans. Further, most anti-virus sites provide the option for email notifications for medium and high risk viruses.

We recommend one of the following vendors for up-to-date software and virus information:

http://www.symantec.nethttp://www.mcafee.comhttp://www.cert.orghttp://trendmicro.com

Install firewall software on each computer in your home

Personal Firewall Software acts as a barrier between your computer and the Internet, helping to block out viruses, worms, Trojans, and unauthorized access to your computer and files. The software runs on your computer like any other software package. Its function is to inspect every packet of data leaving or entering your system and to deny or allow this traffic. The absence of firewall software on your computer may allow your computer to be vulnerable to infection or invasion.

It is best that you research and give consideration to the security required for your computers. There are many packages available on the Internet for a minimal fee.

Software firewalls are available from several vendors, including: http://www.symantec.net http://www.mcafee.com http://www.zonelabs.com http://blackice.iss.net

Zone Labs offers a free version of Zone Alarm personal firewall software at: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Corporate Firewall Solutions

If you are on a network running several computers, you may want to consider a hardware firewall to eliminate the cost of multiple software licenses. Many routers have built-in firewall capability, configurable by your company's Network Administration. If your company does not have a Network Administrator -or- if you are a Network Administrator seeking firewall options, feel free to contact the Nauticom Sales Staff at 724-933-9800 for router and router installation pricing.

29

Page 30: Click OK . Click Close . Close Network and Dial-up Connections'.

Windows Updates

Check for updates for your Windows operating system and for Microsoft Office weekly at minimum! Microsoft frequently releases patches to security holes and vulnerabilities that are found in its software. If you don't obtain and install these updates to an affected computer, your computer is vulnerable to attack and/or infection.

Add the following Microsoft web sites to your Favorites: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.comhttp://office.microsoft.com

Microsoft update sites will scan your computer for uninstalled updates and will let you know which are critical for installation. Be sure to install all critical updates. You may have to restart your computer following each update to fully install the updates or patches.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

1. All cords and connections are snug and plugged in to the proper places.

2. There is nothing between the phone jack and the DSL modem [no splitters or phone filters between the wall jack and modem]

3. Reboot the machine[s] using the DSL connection.

4. Check TCP/IP settings for the network card that the DSL connection is using.

5. No LINE light? Check all of your phone line connections. Unplug the power supply to the modem, leaving it unplugged for a full five (5) minutes. Plug the power in after five (5) minutes has elapsed. If the LINE light does not come on within two (2) minutes, please contact Nauticom Technical Support.

Filters should NOT be placed between the DSL modem and the wall jack. Do not run the telephone line into a surge protector or use any type of line splitter, as these will affect the DSL connection.

6. No Ethernet Light? Check the Ethernet cable to ensure that it is plugged in. If this does not correct the problem, contact the manufacturer of your computer or network card for instructions on reinstalling your network card drivers. Be sure to inform the service representative that you have a DSL connection.

7. Alarm Light on? Please contact Nauticom Technical Support. An alarm light may indicate that your DSL modem needs to be replaced.
