Her Excellency PAULA-MAE WEEKES, O.R.T.T.President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobagoand Chancellor, UTT

Congratulations UTT Class of 2021! As always, I am thrilled to extend well wishes to graduating classes as they brim with excitement, promise and potential, ready to be unleashed upon the world!

Having devoted precious time and energy and made costly sacrifices in the pursuit of academic excellence, you the Graduating Class of 2021 can now, with a great sense of accomplishment, call yourselves alumni of our country’s indigenous university. As recipients of a quality, all-round and modern education, you are well-positioned and prepared to put your newfound skills into practice and make your mark on the local and international stage, following in the footsteps of the many distinguished citizens whose contributions have shaped and directed Trinidad and Tobago’s trajectory.

In this time of crisis and uncertainty, a cohort of talented, willing and productive persons dedicated to advancing the national cause is acutely needed. Having successfully navigated shutdowns, lockdowns, curfews, online schooling and other challenges occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, you have proven yourselves to be more than capable of prevailing in the midst of adversity. Putting your best foot forward, you did not allow the frightening spectre of the pandemic to deter or separate you from your goals. Now that you have arrived at this seminal juncture, your family, friends and the nation are justifiably proud.

As you embark on the journey ahead, keep in mind the constructive lessons gleaned during your time at UTT; the highs and lows of your academic journey instilled in you valuable ideals such as discipline, focus, teamwork and time management. Whether you have chosen to further your studies, enter the world of work or venture into the unknown, I urge you to keep these salutary principles close to heart and build upon them, as they will serve you well in the years to come.

I once again congratulate you on your accomplishment brought about by your hard work and perseverance. As you continue to set lofty goals, work diligently towards them and achieve dizzying new heights, be assured that the entire nation is cheering you on. I wish you immense and lasting success in your future endeavours.

Professor CLÉMENT A.C. IMBERTChairman, Board of Governors, UTT

Congratulations to our graduands, to each and every one of you who has stayed the course on this significant journey in your lives. For some, this achievement should signify the beginning of an illustrious career, for others, it’s another accolade added to the mantle. Regardless of your stage in life, as a new graduate, you have improved your own station in life and look towards better things for yourself and your family, but one notion remains true: you must work in service of others. UTT has done its part in preparing you for this noble ideal.

As students of the National University, you should be inspired to give back to a country that has endowed you with an education that is world-class. Many of you pursued a programme with a service-learning component, others enlisted with the University’s Student Social Responsibility and Volunteerism Centre, both of which entities are proof of UTT’s testament to instilling a sense of societal responsibility in its student population.

As Nelson Mandela, an ardent supporter of life-long learning, proclaimed, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Undoubtedly, the amalgamation of skills and knowledge gained at UTT puts you at the point where you are now ready to make a significant contribution to the society in which you live. Education is more than academics; it is more than certification; it is holistic development; ideally, it will equip us with all the tools required for a meaningful life, and if the past year and a half has taught us anything, it is that we require each other’s support, more than ever, to achieve this.

This is the University’s 18th year and its 16th graduation ceremony, years within which it has fulfilled its duty to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. UTT was created with the intention of filling gaps in the local tertiary education landscape, and it was mandated to serve the country. It continues to do so via pertinent research and development, innovative programme delivery, and you, scholars of the highest calibre.

All that you have achieved so far has been to your own benefit but here you are now, on the cusp of achieving something greater, with the ability to give back to your country. You join an esteemed cohort which has benefitted from high-quality education which is still considered to be a privilege on a global scale. As graduates, I encourage you to be your brother’s keeper and strive to be part of a generation which propagates selfless support of community and country.

Again, I applaud you all on this august achievement, and may your successes continue.

Professor PRAKASH PERSADPresident, UTT

I offer sincere congratulations to the graduating class of 2021! We are happy to be able to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, albeit in a relatively new format.

You have all persevered in a time of extreme uncertainty, an era which will be defined as one which reshaped the modern world, in which traditional norms were challenged and redefined. The world has been fundamentally transformed, and yet you have remained resolute, making your mark in history.

From its inception, UTT has always taken pride in equipping its students with a skillset suited to take on the world. Its programmes are rendered from a global standpoint, with world class faculty, and delivered with consideration made for a multiplicity of learning styles. At the onset of the pandemic, the University made a smooth transition to online/remote teaching, limiting the impact to its student body. Our feedback is that we have been successful in this regard and you, the students, played a critical role in this happening.

We have recognised the need for greater mentoring and support for our students in this challenging time, and therefore have put several measures in place to facilitate the learning process. These included providing online counselling support and staff providing, as far as possible, student learning support services.

I exhort you, the newest cohort of UTT graduates, to raise the benchmark and innovate in your areas of expertise for the advancement of your profession and the nation. Your success, in this most challenging of times, should give you the confidence and competencies to be able to overcome whatever challenges that may crop up in your private and professional lives and I am confident that you will so do.

In closing, I again offer my congratulations to you all on this most noteworthy achievement, and I wish you continued success in your future academic, personal and professional journeys.

Called the “tree of life” by the Tamanac indigenous people, the Moriche Palm was first documented in 1595 by English navigator and poet Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) when he explored the coast of Trinidad. Later, Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus named the palm Mauritia flexuosa. This elegant and majestic tree can grow to a height of 35 metres, making it an easy focal point in its natural setting.

The Moriche Palm is integral to the natural setting of Tamana InTech Park, the site of UTT’s Signature Campus. The image of the Moriche Palm is prominently displayed on the exterior of all rebranded UTT campuses.

Mr. Ferdinand Ferreira is a former political advisor and political activist.

Born in Port-of-Spain in 1932, he is a foundation member of the People’s National Movement (PNM), and also worked as their Elections Officer, and Labour Relations Officer.

Despite having no formal education, Ferreira served thirty-five years in the public service, working on the Port-of-Spain dock, starting as a Messenger, becoming a National Officer, eventually, the General Manager (Ag.) and ultimately, the Commissioner of the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.

He was the political advisor to two Prime Ministers; having the ear of those who helped shape public policy was undoubtedly a reflection of the esteem in which he was held. His political acumen was honed at the University of Woodford Square, learning in the presence of Dr. Eric Williams, of whom “Ferdie” became a dedicated fan. Through this acquired knowledge, Mr. Ferreira was a self-taught political analyst, commentator and columnist, and is the recipient of the Eric Williams Memorial Award.

Mr. Ferreira has also penned his autobiography, “Political Encounters 1946-2016”. This contribution catalogues decades of political history from the viewpoint of someone outside the political arena, who has never sought political office.

His acute analytical ability fortified his contribution to the existing political sphere, which is only bolstered by countless accounts, pictures, interactions and insight into local political processes.

The summation of accomplishments by the self-proclaimed “Dean of Docksford” has contributed to the shaping of a richer and better-informed society, from the most unlikely of resources.

Despite his official retirement in 2016, Mr. Kalipersad continues to contribute to the media by hosting a weekly current affairs radio programme, anchoring weekend news television broadcasts and mentoring young aspiring journalists.

He Is also an “old boy” of the Arima Boys Roman Catholic School and was among the second batch of entrants to the then newly established Holy Cross College, also serving on its Board for several years. He was recognised for his role during the crisis and the Trinidad Express Newspaper honoured him as one of the country’s Individuals of the Year 1990.

Mr. Madeira has pioneered several initiatives that have blossomed into the type of regional coverage of events that are seen today via the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU). Mr. Madeira also served as Information Adviser to Caribbean Community Secretariat (CARICOM) and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC), Manager/Adviser of the Communication Unit of the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health, and Court Protocol and Information Manager of the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago. Graduation ceremonies are among the most anticipated events in the life of a student as they signify moving a step closer to achieving dreams and aspirations.

Indeed, succeeding in your academic pursuits during these trying times has been a remarkable feat since you have done so while adjusting to the new, normalised landscape of education. It has been a period of heightened hard work, dedication, and passion for all leaders, teachers, and parents, in dealing and coping with the chosen mode of learning to meet the most essential of educational requirements. Likewise, the unwavering motivation by supporters along the seemingly thorny road to success caused by the global health crisis, as well as the strict adherence to various health and safety protocols, have enormously impacted this moment of your life. Regardless of the situation, you adapted, you adjusted, you reformed your mindset, placed your shoulder to the wheel, dug your feet into sand and pushed till the end.

YOU MADE IT DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC!In the history books, the COVID-19 pandemic will be described as a challenging time. It is also a time during which UTT’s 2021 graduates endured, and we endured together. You have learnt to make the best use of an unsettling time. You will be the seeds sown for our community which will prove how good things can come out of times of darkness. Your graduation is truly a historical event and we all wait to see where you go next! Each student came to UTT with unique experiences, expectations, and backgrounds and now, you have a deeply shared experience grounded in intense dedication. You all leave UTT equipped with a distinct set of skills, and a commitment to improving Trinidad and Tobago while making a positive impact in the world. In the time spent at your UTT Campus, your community has grown significantly. As a new graduate, your participation in the UTT community has entered a new phase and will extend far beyond the years you have spent at the national University.

As graduating cohorts, you can do anything you set your minds to. Students that can work successfully through the impact of a pandemic can handle any adversity that comes their way. The perseverance required to survive this past year has brought an unprecedented level of confidence which will undoubtedly aid in your ability to manage adversity in the future.

My dear graduates, you have marked another significant milestone in your continued quest for excellence. Certainly, more challenges may come your way, however, I urge you to stay focused and remember that your dream is within reach when you are determined and committed. Let your experience at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) serve as inspiration as you continue to strive for overall excellence.
