The highs are seldom so high and the lows are seldom so low that visitors to Cleveland County can’t experience the outdoor life every day of the year. Right in the heart of Shelby on Sumter Street is Shelby City Park with a children’s playground, nine-hole golf course, tennis court, 1,600-seat gymnasium, an Olympic pool that hosts swim meets, and athletic fields that draw baseball and softball tournaments. The park is also popular for its 1952 Rotary Special Miniature Train and one of the few year-round carrousels (circa 1919) still found in its traditional city park location. The 29-horse carrousel is the centerpiece of the Foothills Merry Go Round Festival every April.Visitors interested in hiking and history can take a walking tour of the Central Shelby Historic District that passes homes and businesses built from the 1850s forward and Sunset Cemetery, established in 1841, the same year Cleveland County was carved from

the already existing Lincoln and Rutherford counties. A printed guide for the tour is available at the Cleveland County Chamber.Anyone eager for a longer stretch of the legs can investigate the Carolina Thread Trail, a network of greenways and trails that

reaches 15 counties. The Kings Mountain Gateway Trails (807 South Battleground Avenue, Kings Mountain) constitute 5.5 miles of scenic trails for hiking and biking and provide restrooms, a picnic area and a shelter. The Broad River Greenway portion of the Carolina Thread Trail (Highway 150 South, Boiling Springs) has 15 miles of multi-use trail and 1,900 linear feet of trail accessible for handicapped individuals. The Greenway has a picnic shelter and areas for swimming, boating, tubing and horseback

Belwood Heritage Museum can be found in the northern part of our county. Learn about the history and culture of the agricultural base that built this region of North Carolina. Kings Mountain Historical Museum - features local historical items such as an antique weaving loom, coal stove, mineral display, film of local history, map, pictures, a replica of the historic Herndon House and more. Shop in the museum store and find books on the local Revolutionary Battle of Kings Mountain and other history information plus post cards, local art prints, cards, jewelry, honey, soap, and crafts. From 1899 to 1943, this structure served as the stop between Lawndale and Shelby for the narrow gauge railroad that connected Cleveland Mills to the major railways. In the station’s later years, it was serviced with Texaco gasoline to supply gas for the automobiles that were becoming more popular. Take a farm tour, visit the gift shop and make sure you try the homemade ice cream.Harvest Works, about two miles north of Cleveland Community College on North Post Road, covers 20-plus acres with two greenhouses, a barn, fields of crops, walking trails, a mining flume and various farm animals. Visit the petting zoo, the restaurant and the gift shop with handcrafted items, gem stones and other novelties.Cleveland County is home to two vineyards, located between the Catawba and Broad rivers. Both wineries offer tours and wine tasting. Baker Buffalo Creek Vineyard and Winery is at 3521 Fallston-Waco Road, Lawndale; Owl’s Eye Vineyard and Winery is at 1414 Metcalf Road, Shelby.The roar of the race cars, the smell of gasoline and smoke and the enthusiasm of the crowd keep three raceways running in Cleveland County. The historic Cleveland County Fairgrounds Speedway hosts dirt track racing at its finest on a 0.25-mile track on Friday nights. Cleveland County Speedway and Motorsports Complex in Lawndale has a 0.25-mile clay oval track where Young Guns, Street Stock 4, Front Wheel Drive, Pure Stocks, Renegades, Limited Sportsman and Crate Late Model classes compete. Shadyside Dragway off Honey Haven Farm Road in Shelby is a smooth, concrete 0.125-mile, high-speed drag strip that is the home of the King of the South Outlaw 10.5 Shootout.

The festivals are listed here in chronological order and you can most certainly find something that strikes your fancy.Foothills Merry Go Round Festival, Shelby City Park, April: The star attraction is, of course, the restored 1919 Herschell-Spillman 32-horse carrousel, but there are also carnival rides, live entertainment, fireworks and food. Purchased in 1951, the carrousel underwent restoration from the late 1980s to 1998, when the carrousel moved into its new home in the Anne Dover Bailey Pavilion.Arts on the Square, Court Square, Shelby, April: Between 40 and 50 vendors occupy the Court Square with pottery, woodwork, jewelry and more during this all-day festival dedicated to promoting fine arts and crafts by Southern artists.Crossroads Festival, South Main Street, Boiling Springs, May: Vendors and exhibitors from all over the region converge at the “crossroads of opportunity” for this 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. festival. Foods range from classic fried fare to trendy cuisine and attendees shop for crafts, clothing, beauty supplies and more as regional musicians entertain.Beach Blast, Patriots Park, Kings Mountain, July: From 10 am to 10 pm, partygoers feel like they’re on the Grand Strand as they listen to beach music by some of the best beach show bands in the South, compete in a bikini contest and beach volleyball tournament, and shop the craft and food vendors.Real to Reel International Film Festival, Joy Performance Center, Kings Mountain, July: This forum for independent film, video and multi-media artists from around the world serves as a showcase for their talents and exposes our region to their work. Attendees get a chance to talk with many of the filmmakers and partake of concession goodies during the movies.7th Inning Stretch Festival, Court Square, Shelby, August: With a name like 7th Inning Stretch, you would think this festival has to do with baseball – and you would be right! one-day festival, but it is a product of Cleveland County ALWS Baseball Inc., the nonprofit agency responsible for the American Legion World Series

(ALWS). The festival takes place the Saturday before the week the ALWS begins and it is a thank you to the community for its support of the annual national tournament. The first event of the day is a 5K in early morning; the children’s events, the food and the music begin mid-afternoon and continue into the evening. The festival usually has at least three bands performing in free concerts; artists are local and regional groups, plus nationally known stars. Clear Mountain View Music Festival, Elliott Family Farms, Polkville, August: This three-day music event begins Thursday evening and runs until midnight Saturday. Various stages are set up over 50 rolling acres south of the South Mountains, hence the festival’s name. Multiple music groups perform bluegrass, folk, rock ‘n’ roll, etc. Campers are welcome and attendees can bring small dogs as long as they are on leashes. There is parking for handicapped attendees and trained medical personnel are on site. Shelby Hamfest, Cleveland County Fairgrounds, Shelby, Labor Day Weekend: The Shelby Amateur Radio Club Inc. has sponsored this two-day gathering since 1957. Ham radio aficionados gather between 6,000 and 12,000 strong for the oldest and one of the largest gatherings of amateur radio operators in the United States. Art of Sound, Uptown Shelby, September: This three-day music festival from Thursday through Saturday is by and for lovers of the arts. It has been around long enough to attract headliner acts from the national scene. Venues include the Cleveland County Arts Center and the Don Gibson Theatre, plus several Uptown restaurants. Bluegrass, jazz, country rock, big band – you can hear it all and more at The Art of Sound. Visitors often find themselves enjoying a spontaneous jam session by the artists.

Heritage Day, Elliott Family Farms, Polkville, October: Elliott Family Farms hosts this annual all-day tribute to local history on a turn-of-the-century farm. Activities include a horse pull, making molasses and apple butter the old-fashioned way, basket weaving, spinning and corn grinding. Displays of antique tractors and engines, restored cabins, a general store and a dress shop draw adults while children enjoy bounce houses, cornhole and a hay maze. Vendors supply food and cold drinks. Primitive campsites are available.The Gateway Festival, Downtown Kings Mountain, October: Celebrated all across town, the festival covers the gazebo in Patriots Park, the Kings Mountain Historical Museum, Mauney Library and the Southern Arts Depot. A trolley carries visitors to all the locations continuously throughout the day. A

classic car show, a Cute Critters competition and a variety of music entertain. Re-enactors depict life during the American

Revolutionary War years and share history through demonstrations, an encampment and a battle re-enactment. Mush, Music and Mutts: Shelby’s Fall Liver Mush Festival, Court Square, Shelby, October: This traditional food festival is the Official State of North Carolina Fall Liver Mush Festival. It includes, of course, many liver mush offerings on the festival site plus liver mush specials at most of the uptown restaurants. Children’s activities, a Pet Festival and regional music groups performing on two stages are highlights of the day. Any month is a good month for visitors who have a fondness for museums, like the Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South, Kings Mountain Historical Museum and the Presidential Culinary Museum. In addition, performance centers such as the Don Gibson Theatre, Gardner-Webb University’s Blanton Auditorium and Dover Theatre, and the Joy Performance Center offer a variety of live artists and stage plays year-round.Here’s a brief guide to some of each month’s activities, the average temperature during the month and suggested clothing for comfort, depending on your personal thermostat.

JANUARY & FEBRUARY: Average temperature of 45˚F can dip to 12˚ or zip to 77˚. Bring a jacket with a hood, gloves and thick socks plus a light long-sleeved shirt in case the 70s make an appearance in Cleveland County’s two

coldest months. You may see some snow, but the average annual snowfall is only 4 inches. February is noted for the “Treasures of the Earth” Pottery Show and Sale.

MARCH: Average temperature of 53˚F, but can plunge into the teens or escalate to the mid-80s. Plan to dress in layers so you can add or peel. If you are planning a wedding The Cleveland County Bridal Fair is held the first Saturday and Sunday

in March .APRIL: Average temperature of 61˚F with some lows in the 20s and highs hitting 90˚. April is another month for layered clothing. You can enjoy Easter egg hunts, Civil War period re-enactors, Arts on the Square and the Foothills Merry Go Round Festival.MAY: Average temperature of 67˚F with lows touching 40˚ and highs reaching 90˚. Tuck a lightweight jacket in with your shorts and T-shirts. Whether you compete or cheer from the sidelines, take in the Over the Mountain Triathlon, one of only six National Championship Qualifiers.

JUNE: Average temperature of 76˚F with lows around 50˚ and highs touching 100˚. Shorts and T-shirts rule but a lightweight jacket will feel good at 50˚. Join cowboys and cowgirls for the Polkville IPRA Rodeo, a tradition since 2000.

Fourth of July celebrations abound, plus the Real to Reel International Film Festival and the Kings Mountain Beach Blast.AUGUST: Average temperature of 79˚, the highest monthly average of the year. Minimum temperatures may touch the mid-60s and the maximums may reach 102˚. Wear your coolest gear! The county’s only annual national sports event, the six-day American Legion World Series, is held at Keeter Stadium.

SEPTEMBER: Average temperature of 72˚F with the lows heading into the mid-40s and the highs in the mid-90s. Most days call for T-shirts and shorts but you might carry a lightweight jacket to the Cleveland County Fair, the state’s largest

county fair, which runs for 11 days.OCTOBER: Average temperature of 60˚F with minimum temps down to 30˚ and maximums up to 90˚. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts usually suffice but a medium-weight jacket feels good from the middle of the month when Mush, Music and Mutts (the Official N.C. Fall Liver Mush Festival) comes to Shelby’s historic Court Square. The Art of Sound and certain haunted events come ‘round later in the month.NOVEMBER: Average temperature of 51˚F with the possibility of high teens for lows and low 80s for highs. Layered clothing is recommended with a medium-to-heavy jacket on hand. Barbecue fiends gather for the Hog Happnin’ Kansas City BBQ Competition and those ready for the holidays visit the Enchanted Forest at the Broad River Greenway.

DECEMBER: Average temperature of 45˚F but Christmas could see the high teens or the high 70s. The county’s highest monthly rainfall is recorded in December, so have some headwear handy, along with some thermal underwear and several top
