As Christmas approaches, a range of agencies in County Durham including the Police, Public Health and local councils are launch-ing a new campaign to raise awareness about domestic abuse. The ‘Sorry’s not enough – there is no excuse for abuse’ campaign has been launched as Christmas ap-proaches, as in the past there have been increases in reports of abuse at this time of year. The campaign was devel-oped as part of ongoing multi-agency work and the Police and Crime Commis-sioner Ron Hogg’s Regional violence against women and girls strategy. As part of the campaign a dedicated website has been set up and posters will be appearing at key locations across the force area. The posters will depict images of differ-ent victims in the hope of showing that this abuse

really can affect anyone. Promotional items like pens and notepads have also been produced with the campaign branding. Ron Hogg, Police and Crime Commissioner said, “As well as raising awareness, the aim of the campaign is to encourage victims to get the help they need and to warn abusers that domestic abuse will not be tolerated. “I can’t stress enough that tackling domestic abuse is everyone’s business. There were 14,500 domestic abuse calls made to us last year, which is about 40 calls every day. Domestic abuse accounts for 8% of all crime in County Durham and Darlington and 40% of violent crime reported to us was domestic abuse. “This is staggering, and although Durham was only one of a few forces that received a positive inspec-tion from HMIC around how we work with a range of

agencies to investigate domestic abuse, we are determined to continue to work hard together to eradicate domestic abuse across Durham and Darling-ton.”Lucy Hovvels, Cabinet Member chairs the Multia-gency Group who tackle domestic abuse in County Durham and holds the Portfolio for Healthy, Safer Communities said, “Whether it’s happening to you, a friend, a col-league or a member of your family we want you to take action. This campaign is ultimately a call for action to ask everyone to play their part in tackling this crime by ensuring they are aware of it. As a society we should not tolerate this type of criminality and be committed to working together to tackle it.”More information about the campaign can be found on www.sorrysnotenough.co.uk.

Shildon Police are appeal-ing for information regard-ing a series of incidents which have taken place in Bouch Street, where people have been kicking at back gates and banging on lower windows, result-ing in one being smashed.

The incidents have been occurring between 6pm and 10pm, with the damage being caused on the evening of 27th November. If you know who is respon-sible then call the non-emergency number, 101.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a window was broken to the down-stairs front room of a house in Dent Street, Shildon, at around 8.40pm on Sunday 7th December.

A male wearing a woolly hat was seen running away from the scene. Any information can be passed to PC 2218 Surtees at Bishop Auckland Police Station.

Twenty three of Shildon’s youth descended on the Metro Centre on Saturday 6th December with one mission in mind. Winding their way through the crowds of Christmas shoppers they were there not for themselves but for others. Each was armed with a £5 note and a plan, they were to buy a gift for someone who may not get any presents, along with a

Company’s staff donate holiday pay to Shildon Foodbank

Photo (left to right): Derick Dunn, Salvation Army Shildon; Margaret Dunn, Salvation Army; Beverley Reece, Identity Consult; Peter Maclellan, Durham Foodbank; Andrea Kerry, Salvation Army; Linda Watson, Salvation Army.

Staff at the Shildon Depot of Durham Foodbank were delighted to learn that they were to be the beneficiar-ies of a staff fundraising event at Sunderland-based company, Identity Consult.Staff at the quantity sur-veying firm were able to buy an extra day’s holiday over the Christmas period with all the funds raised going to the Shildon charity, operated from the town’s Salvation Army. Shildon – home town of Identity Consult’s Managing Director, David Dent – is one of 25 distri-bution centres operated on behalf of Durham Foodbank. The project is run by the Durham Chris-tian Partnership and which has grown from a single centre in Durham city into a county-wide project feeding over 15,000 people this year, up from 10,000 last year.

Each member of the Identity Consult staff paid £25 for their extra day’s holiday while company directors paid double. In all, the firm raised a total of £775 which was handed over to Peter Maclel-lan, Director of Durham Foodbank, and Derick Dunn of the Shildon branch of the Salvation Army by Identity Consult’s Finan-cial Controller, Beverley Reece. “All of the staff were very keen to help this worthy cause,” said Ms Reece. “We are in the fortunate position where we can afford to buy an extra day’s holiday but there are so many people in our communities who are not so lucky. The company already sponsors Shildon Football Club and the Shildon AFC Development Centre so it was natural to choose the Shildon Depot

of Durham Foodbank for our support.”Identity Consult Managing Director, David Dent said, “I grew up in Shildon and have retained an involve-ment with the town. Our support with this initia-tive is just another way of putting something back into a frontline service where hopefully some less fortunate than ourselves will not have to make the decision between heating or food; maybe now they can have both.”For anyone wishing to help Durham Foodbank by making a cash or food donation or by volunteer-ing; or to find out more about distribution and col-lection centres, its Christ-mas appeal and other ways to help, further informa-tion is available at the Durham Foodbank website at durhamfoodbank.org.uk.

The number of County Durham residents signed-up to the extended garden waste collection scheme has already topped the 15,000 mark.Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, Cllr Brian Stephens said, “These are early days but the initial feedback is hugely support-ive. There is still plenty of time for others to subscribe and it is really good that we are able to offer the service to even more households.” By signing up for a £20 annual fee, residents receive 16 fortnightly col-lections between spring

and autumn. Anyone opting to take up a three year subscription will get a dis-counted rate of £50.Rotters will continue to work in partnership with Durham County Council in Teesdale in 2015 and the same annual fee applies.Residents are reminded they need to subscribe by February 1st to get all garden waste collections in 2015.To find out if a property is eligible for garden waste collections and to sign up to the service, go to www.durham.gov.uk/garden-waste or call 03000 261 000.

Jackie Layfield is the new John Hay Memorial Domino Handicap champion after beating last year’s winner Lee “Chesney” Gardiner in the final at Dean Street clubhouse at the begin-ning of the month. The Domino tournament was inaugurated last year by Sue Charlton to celebrate the memory of her partner, John Hay, a Director of Shildon Football Club who passed away in 2012 while watching his team play. The tournament also acts as a fundraiser for charities close to John

and Sue’s hearts: the Artificial Limb Centre at the James Cook Memorial Hospital; Diabetes UK and Shildon AFC.The tournament was well supported again this year and raised £59 towards the causes. While Lee blamed his pre-tournament prepa-ration, having failed to eat a steak before the competition, Jackie ex-pressed her delight at winning: “I can’t believe it,” she said, “and it was good to beat last year’s champion, especially as he knocked my son out of the competition in the

quarter finals.”The annual tourna-ment takes place on the Saturday closest to John’s 30th November birthday.Sue added, “I would like to thank everyone who attended and sup-ported the event, and also those who sponsored the previous weekend’s sky dive. It seems the luck is with Jackie at the moment as she also won a signed Shildon top on the day of the sky dive.”The Crier will bring more news of the sky dive when the final total of the funds raised has been calculated.

In the run up to Christmas police are asking shopkeep-ers and staff to be extra vigilant, as shoplifters are often active at this time of year. They would also en-courage anybody to report suspicious behaviour that they might observe whilst

out shopping. “Please also make sure when going out to keep your blinds and curtains closed at home and leave a light on, as ever we would advise you to ensure your windows and doors remain locked at all times.”

Shildon AFC Juniors Under 8’s opponents in their most recent game were 21st All Stars. The match got under way with the All Stars scoring the first goal. Shildon played well and Noah Fawcett scored for

Shildon to bring the score level to 1-1 at half time. All Stars went on to score another two goals to bring the final score to All Stars 3 – Shildon 1. This was the team’s first league defeat of the season.

Shildon U14s play at their best despite crippling injuries

For the 2nd time in a week Shildon AFC’s away game against Shaw Lane Aqua-force from Barnsley in the F.A. Vase was cancelled because of pitch problems. The Railwaymen were due to play the Yorkshire side on Saturday 6th December, then on Tuesday 9th December, but both games were called off. The match has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday 16th December with a 7.45pm kick off. If the game is called off again it will be played the follow-ing day on Wednesday 17th December at Dean Street. These cancellations are causing Shildon problems in their league fixtures as the Railwaymen are falling behind in games played. They have now only played 17 games in the league,

whilst top of the table West Auckland Town have played 24. If Shildon beat Shaw Lane they have been drawn away to Walsall Wood FC from the West Midlands in the 4th Round of the competition. The game will be played on Saturday 17th January. There is a scheduled league game taking place on Saturday 13th December when Shildon travel to Morpeth Town.

First defeat of the season

Shildon Under 14 Juniors put in arguably their best performance of the season when they came away with all 3 points after Sunday's game away at North Ormesby. Due to crippling injuries, Shildon only had 10 fit players available to start the match. Tom Andelin was named Captain in place of the injured Cain Smith. Many of the youngsters were played in strange po-sitions out of necessity but despite the changes, gave a fantastic performance. Shildon fell behind after 10 minutes when a weak clearance was thundered home via a deflection to put Shildon 1 behind.

The ten men battled on bravely and, 5 minutes before the break, Adam Campbell rode a desper-ate challenge and powered home a left foot drive into the bottom left corner for the equaliser. After the break Shildon, to their great credit, started to dominate proceedings and added 3 more goals. Ben Oliver dribbled past a couple of the home side defenders before lashing the ball in then, starting as centre forward for the first time, Steven Dawson claimed two goals. The first came after his initial shot rebounded off a post and he cracked it home but his 2nd goal was of

the highest order. Adam Campbell turned the home side’s left back inside out then crossed the ball towards the centre of the goal. Dawson leapt into the air and scored with a perfectly executed bicycle kick which tore into the top left hand corner, for what must be one of the goals of the season. A soft penalty was awarded and scored by the home side but the brave 10 men of Shildon were not to be denied. A spokesperson com-mented, “Fantastic result, what character shown by the boys.”Final score 4-2 to Shildon Juniors. MOM Steven Dawson.
