Window cleaningOHS work skills matrix and major hazard management modules

Evaluate itThe control measures should be evaluated both during and afterimplementation. Possible questions are:

Has the fix it recommendations eliminated or reduced the risksassociated with window cleaning?

Has the fix it recommendations created a new hazard?

Is there a need for information, instruction and training for peopleat the time of implementing the control measure?

Fix it1. In the first circumstance, consider other options for working at heights

ie, scaffolding, scissor lifts and elevating work platform vehicles. Fall arrestharnesses would be used in conjunction with these alternative devices.

    2. Use equipment with telescopic handles.3. Inspect ladder before use. Remove and report any faulty equipment.4. Take care handling ladders whilst being raised, lowered or carried.5. Place the ladder on a firm and level footing.

    6. Avoid placing over or near any door openings.7. Secure ladders by using hooks, chain or similar means.

    8. Avoid using the top three steps of the ladder.9. One person on the ladder at any one time.10. Avoid any excessive reaching or leaning from the side of the ladder.

    11. Determine whether glass cleaner is commercially prepared and read thelabel or the material safety data sheet and follow the instructions provided.

    12. Provide appropriate warning signs advising the public of the work in progress.

Review itA review of the entire hazard management process should beperformed at regular intervals during the term of the contract.

This can be part of a regular inspection, when the workenvironment changes or when work practices change,to ensure that no new hazards have been introduced.

It could also be part of a system audit.

This review process completes the continuous improvement cycle.
