Design Guidelines HOLE CONSIDERA TIONSThe edges of hardened holes should be deburred. SAE 30302/30304 pins are not recommended for hardened o es. ast or s ntere meta oes s ou e prov e with a slight lead-in radius. Excessive burrs from drilling or stampn g oes s ou e avo e . SHAFT DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS e o e n a s a t s ou not excee 1 3 o t e s at diameter. For mild steel and nonferrous shafts, we re co mmen st an ar ut y p ns. e ex tr a stre ng t of a heavy duty pin is only beneficial if the hole is 1 4 t e ameter o t e s a t or ess or t e sa t s hardened. TEMPERATURE CONSIDERATIONS Application temperatures for carbon and alloy steel pins should be -50° F (-45° C) to 300° F (150° C). t a n ess stee per or ms satisfactorily in temperatures up to 500° F (260° an as ow as - - . Stainless steel SAE 51420 pins are excellent forapp ca t on s up to an as ow as -50° F (-45° C). PLATING CORROSION CONSIDERATIONS nc p at ng re uces atmosp er c an ga van c corrosion. Phosphate coating, in addition to offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance, is an excellent base for paint. SAE 30302/30304 has an excellent range ofcorro s on res stance n ot oxygenatng an nonoxygenating agents. as a g oo rang e o corros on res stan ce in oxygenating agents. HINGES, PIVOTS AND AXLE DESIGN Coiled pins have found wide application as hinges, p vots an ax es. nce te part o t e p n not e n he tight hole tends to recover i ts expanded diameter, new es gn concep ts nee to e cons ere . f a free hinge, pivot or axle is the objective, determine he maximum tight hole, insert a pin and measure he exposed diameter of the pin. Add a clearance factor, usually .001" or 0.025 mm. This establishes he minimum free hole. The free fit is preferred in the center component. a rct on t s t e o ect ve, a t e holes have to be the same and the hole toler ance has o e re uce to avo excess ve r ct on or a oose t. mpirically developed data is available on request.
