Clayton County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, in-cluding a full-time chairman who oversees more than 20 departments and thousands of employees. Each com-missioner has a constitu-ents aide, or an executive assistant in the chairman’s case, to helps them address residents’ concerns.

The county’s website, www.claytoncountyga.gov, has won several Sunny Awards for government transparency from the Sunshine Review. In addition to information about Board of Commissioners meetings, the website features informa-tion and links concerning the county’s cities, Humane

Society, restaurant scores, property record and tax searches, prison inmate searches, bids and propos-als and traffic fine payments.

The county commission-ers are:

Page 4 Wednesday, July 29, 2015 Henry/Clayton Community Profile • ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of the most well-known racing tracks in the country. Residents will be impressed by the afford-ability of the events — children 5 and under are admitted free of charge for many events.

At one time, AMS hosted its annual NASCAR race on Labor Day weekend, but that race was moved to late Feburary. Jimmie Johnson won the Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500 in the latest go-round in 2015.

The Saturday night before its marquee race, AMS plays host to the NASCAR XFINITY Series Hisense 250, which Kevin Harvick was won this past year. That same day, AMS also holds the Camping World Truck Series Hyundai Construction Equipment 200, won by Matt Crafton earlier this year.

When the race at AMS was held over the Labor Day week-end, it was one of the last races of the years and played an important part in determining the 16-driver field for the Chase for the NAS-CAR Sprint Cup.

Now, instead of jockeying for position, the early season race at AMS is an opporunity for drivers to begin the season on the right track.

Although AMS is best known for that annual NASCAR spec-tacle, it hosts events year-round.

In April, the track hosts the Summit Racing Equipment

Atlanta Motorama, an automotive show open to classic cars, mo-torcycles and more. Last year, 12 BIGFOOT monster trucks were displayed and two of the fleet’s trucks put on a car-crushing exhibition.

Over the summer, the track hosts its popular grassroots racing series, Thursday Thunder. From June to late July, the 10-week racing series takes place on the 1/4-mile Thunder Ring, a flat rac-ing surface located on the track’s frontstretch.

AMS also hosts a Bandolero National Qualifier race during the season.

The Bandolero Nationals has featured some of racing’s young-est rising stars over the years. NASCAR standouts such as David Ragan, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Ty Dillon all raced Bandolero cars early in their rac-ing careers at AMS.

Another AMS event is the 18-week Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine event. Since 2006,

the event has allowed competitors to drag race in a wide range of vehicles on the pit lane drag strip. Competitors in past years have raced trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and more.

From December to April, AMS opens its track to Legends and Bandolero cars for the six-race Winter Flurry series.

The track also hosts numerous shows, events, NASCAR racing experiences and driving schools.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is located at 1500 Tara Place in Hampton. Refer to www.atlanta-motorspeedway.com or call 770-946-4211 for an updated event schedule and ticket prices.

The Speedway’s schedule includes:

• O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine Championship — Aug. 28

• Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Weekend — Date TBA

• Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama — April 16-17, 2016
