He was a self-taught actor who learned the business as he went along. He set up his own production company in 1948 with Harold Hecht and James Hill to direct his career. 

Lancaster was nominated four times for Academy Awards and won once for his work in Elmer Gantry in 1960. Elmer Gantry is a 1960 drama film about a con man and a female evangelist selling religion to small town America. The stars are Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons.Lancaster won an Academy Award for his performance, as did co-star Shirley Jones. Lancaster played as Elmer Gantry in this movie.
