SheobtainedaPhDbyop4mizingsolarcelldevices,andshecon4nuestoworkonhowtomakesolarcellsmoreefficientatharves4ngenergyfromthesun.

CarrEverbach,Professor Mymainresearchinterestisacous&cs,andinpar4culartheinterac4onofsoundwaveswithbiologicalsystems.Myresearchinvolveshowultrasounddrivesmicroscopicbubblestogrowandcollapseviolently,aprocesscalledacous&ccavita&on.Biomedicalapplica4onsofultrasoundfallintotwocategories:therapeu4canddiagnos4c.Intherapeu&cultrasound,theengineeringobjec4veisfortheacous4cwavestocausebeneficialchangesinhuman4ssue:removingcholesterolplaquefromarteries,healingwounds,breakingupkidneystones,orkillingbacteria.Indiagnos&cultrasoundapplica4ons,conversely,theengineeringobjec4veistouseultrasoundassonartoproducehigh-qualityimagesofhuman4ssueswithoutalteringthem:acous4calmammography,fetalultrasound,echo-cardiography.Aswithmanytechnologies,thesamebasictoolscanbeusedindifferentwaystoaccomplishdifferenttasks,andmystudentslearnaboutwavepropaga4on,transducers,amplifiers,signalprocessingtechniques,andabitofbiologytocarrytheresearchforward.IhavepublishedfiCeenresearchpaperswithstudentsinthepast10years,andmystudentsrou4nelyatendAcous4calSocietyofAmericamee4ngstopresenttheirresults. Mystrongsecondaryinterestisinenvironmentaltechnologiesthathelpsolveproblemsforthe“botombillion”ofhumanity.Ac4veintheEnvironmentalStudiesprogramatSwarthmoreandafoundingmemberoftheSustainabilityCommitee,Ibelievethatengineershaveamoraldutytousetheirtalentsandopportuni4estomaketheworldabeterplace.Globalclimatechange,pollu4onreduc4on,povertyallevia4on,andscienceeduca4onareallareastowhichengineersshouldcontribute,andinwhichIhaveac4veresearchprojects.IamalsothedirectoroftheMacalester-Pomona-Swarthmorestudy-abroadprogramattheUniversityofCapeTown(SouthAfrica)thattakesplaceJanuary-to-Juneforthird-yearstudents.
NelsonMacken,ProfessorProfessorMackenisamechanicalengineerandteachesintheareaofthermalenergyconversion.Thermalenergyisinvolvedinthedesignofenginesthataretheprimemoversofvehicles,theproduc4onofelectricity,hea4ngandcoolingofbuildingsandallotherprocessesthataddandremoveheatfromhuman-madeandnaturalsystems.Hisworkincludesthedesignofenergyconversionsystemsaswellasthedevelopmentofenergysourcesandtheirsustainability.Prof.Macken’scurrentresearchinterestsincludebiomassconversiontobiofuels,microfluidswithbiologicalapplica4ons,alterna4veenergy,includingfuelcellapplica4ons,andmul4phaseflowwithapplica4onstonuclearpowergenera4on.Hehasco-authoredeightpaperswithSwarthmorestudentsinthepastfiveyears.Recently,headvisedourpar4cipa4onintheShellEco-Marathon,aninterna4onalcontestforhighlyefficientvehicles.Ourfuelcellpoweredvehicleachievedover1200miles/gallon(gasolineequivalent)!Prof.Mackenalsoconductsanoutreachprograminvolvingcollegestudentsandmiddleschoolstudents.Prof.Mackenenjoysworkingwithstudentsofalllevelsinhisresearchandoutreachprojects.Pleasecontacthimformoreinforma4on.

founderofSwarthmore'sinterdisciplinaryPrograminEnvironmentalStudies,andhealsodirectsSwarthmore’sforeignstudyprograminCentralEurope(PolandandCzechRepublic).Hehasdevelopedandtaughtcoursesonenvironmentaltechnologyandmodelingincluding:Introduc4ontoEnvironmentalProtec4on,EnvironmentalSystemsEngineering,WaterQualityandPollu4onControl,andSolarEnergySystems.

Hisresearchinteresthasbeenincontrolofdynamicsystemspar4cularlytheroleofneuralnetworksandmul4variatemethods.Morerecently,hisworkisinsystembiology.Inpar4cular,Dr.Piovosohasmodeledtheinterac4onoftheHIVvirusandan4viraldrugsinthehumanbody.ThisworkhasledtonewapproachestothemethodusedtochangetherapyforindividualswhodeveloparesistantHIVvirus.Also,morerecentworkprovidesnewevidenceastothemechanismbywhichtheHIVpersistsdespitedrugtherapy.Overtheyears,Dr.Piovosohaspublishedover100researchpapers.
