A.V.I.DAdvancement Via Individual Determination

What A.V.I.D is: A.V.I.D is a college preparatory program designed to get students to the 4

year University.

A.V.I.D is a class students take every semester for 3 years.

A.V.I.D. support program to help students succeed in rigorous courses

What A.V.I.D is not: A.V.I.D is not a program to motivate students to go to college.

A.V.I.D is not an “easy” program, students are required to take Honors and AP courses.

A.V.I.DAdvancement Via Individual Determination

The A.V.I.D student profile:

A student who wants to attend a four year University.

A student who works hard in his courses, completing assignments and studying for tests.

A student who earns A’s, B’s and C’s in his classes.

A student who has good attendance and appropriate classroom behavior.

A student who has a GPA ranging from 2.0 to 3.5.

A student who has a “weak” spot, for example struggles in Math or Science.

Page 20: Class of 2017 High School Graduation Requirements o Ms. M. T. Frias A-K o Ms. P. Morales L o Ms. R. Alotis M-Z o Ms. L. HoweMagnet.

What do A.V.I.D students do in A.V.I.D classes?

In the 10th grade* - students are taught study skills, organizational skills, time management skills and participate in tutorials twice a week.

*10th grade AVID is zero period class, it starts at 7am

In the 11th grade – students begin to research colleges/Universities and match those colleges with the student’s personal preferences. The students are still required to participate in tutorials twice a week.

In the 12th grade – The entire A.V.I.D class applies to four year colleges, financial aid and scholarships. Students are required to visit the college office on a weekly basis. Students are also required to be tutors for the 10th and 11th graders.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) is a small learning community at Cleveland High School that provides students with a high quality education using a humanities curriculum that is interdisciplinary, thematic and writing based. We prepare our students for college by focusing on critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.

SUMMING UP

What if I am not a good writer? One does not have to be a good writer to join Interdisciplinary Studies. IS offers project based learning experiences that support writing skills. IS students also create and study art through sculpture, drawing, and animation. Interdisciplinary Studies prepares students for college and helps them make lasting friendships through their club, field trips and groups projects while providing positive learning experiences.
