I completed a Master's in the Interdisciplinary Telecommunication Program from the Univ of Colorado School of Engineering in 1979 and completed an MS degree in Philosophy from the same institute in 1986 If money were no object, you would... What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? No twenty year old that I know has a vision of life at 60! Harrington, professor of philosophy and religious studies, had a seminal impact on my abiding interest in philosophy and he helped make it 'okay' to embrace the Romantics and especially Nietzsche What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? The physical campus has always reminded me of the 'ideal' location for a liberal arts college. Of course, I think we all carry many personal memories from the experiences in college that are deeply treasured. If you have visited the campus since graduating, what has been the most surprising change? When I visited the campus in 1986 I could not get over how the Howard Hall dorm room I had occupied fifteen years earlier was no larger than a broom closet! Yet in those earlier days the space was infused with a much larger significance.

Do you have children? What are their names and ages? One daughter--Katie. Age 23 Do you volunteer or support non-profit organizations in your community? Why is this important to you? Mostly support groups through financial contributions. Was on a local Ducks Unlimited committee for about 12 years; participate in American Cancer Society Relay for Life, assisted with several committees of Montana Chapter of American Fisheries Society. Volunteering lets you help out and practice your humility--be grateful for some of the opportunities you were given and pass it on. What is the professional or personal achievement of which you are the most proud? Personally, surviving cancer for more than 15 years has been quite gratifying. That and my family make it all worthwhile. From a professional standpoint, being able to spend a significant portion of my working life doing a job that I had dreamed about is really a treat. I'm officially the first "National Park Service" fisheries biologist hired in Yellowstone National Park. There are lots of activities which were extremely special--not necessarily achievements, but noteworthy to me. For example, I was able to go to the headwaters of the Snake River, where it seeps out of the ground and is approximately 4 inches wide. That and collecting water samples from Old Faithful geyser made me feel quite lucky. Where have you lived and traveled? What are your favorite places in the world? After L&C--Eugene for 3 years, then off to Colorado for a year and a half. Since 1977, I have been living in Wyoming and Bozeman, Montana. Traveled to Mexico, Scotland, and British Columbia. Also spent a winter (January-April) in the Bering Sea on a Japanese factory/ fishing boat. Favorite places: Cannon Beach, Yellowstone Lake, my house in Bozeman, and all of the places that I haven't yet been to on the bucket list. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I'm not complaining about "my backyard" right now. Mostly I'd like a place with trees, an ocean, good hunting, and neighbors that belonged to the political party of "How can I help You and forget about my minor problems" Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? Yes,--managed not to go over to Vietnam and went to U of O in Eugene (Go Ducks!) There I continued with my aquatics/ fisheries interests and graduated with an M.S. in Biology in 1975. For those that are interested, my specific topic of study was looking at why all the salmon die during a spawning run, but only some of the steelhead succumb. If money were no object, you would... Get some horse, fix up all of our vehicles, take about 1000 kids per year fishing, spend lots of time in "less developed " countries and see what we could learn from each other about protecting water resources, make sure that our political elections were actually representative of what most people want done. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now? I'm not sure I looked that far ahead, because my parents weren’t even this old when I was @L&C. Mostly, I just looked forward to an interesting job, a family, and a healthy life.

26

What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? Find something new to be inspired about every day, keep the stress down, and for God's sake--laugh a bunch each day. Being in government, I know for a fact that 99% of the crises we face each day are self-imposed and not worth the associated health deterioration that comes with "success". I'm happy to go fishing every day, stroke the mane of a horse, open the door for someone at the grocery store, or tell the latest anti-wolf person why they don't have enough information about what is really happening with their elk herds. It's not really a desire for the mythical "whirled peas", but was our country so divided over Nam as we are now fighting over retirement benefits and health care?? What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world? Dr. Darrow, Dr. Stauffer, and Dr. Stallcup were my primary instructors and laid the foundation for what I do today. There are many others that influenced me so deeply that I don't even remember their name--only what they looked like. International affairs for all freshman, with the distinguished internationally recognized (except by me) gentleman with the white beard; the political science cynic who was always waving his arms (how prophetic he was in his "Military Policy" class!), and the quiet and patient artist who tried to guide an uncoordinated oaf like me through the basics of calligraphy. As the Peter, Paul, and Mary song goes--"I'll never forget old what's-her-name", I can only describe these teachers, but I can't tell you their names. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? It was the right place for me--a bigger school wouldn't have put me on the same path. From the beginning: hazing and hiding the L&C log in our dorm room, broken umbrellas, campus protests trying to get rid of John Howard, sunsets @ the beach, international dinners, sleeping in the library while trying to cram for a final exam, working in the kitchen for Saga, swinging on the flagpole in the Rose Gardens, the view of Mt. Hood from the Manor, watching the push pins in the bulletin board rust within a couple of weeks after we moved into the new dorm, non-religious lectures in the chapel--never quite got used to that,- our wonderful off campus trip throughout Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii,- the numerous friends and classmates that I spent time with, most of whom I only remember fondly, clear cutting of the trees by the reflection pool (little did I know that this would be practice for later events in my life), anti-Vietnam moratorium, Booby Kennedy killed, Martin Luther King, Jr. killed, Zombies playing at our class reunion, drinking beer on top of the cafeteria and on top of the water tower at the nunnery. Lots of great times in Portland--listening to Dr. Corn and Puddle City downtown and the great music that was brought to campus--Byrds and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Lots of time at the girls' dorms, but most important of all,--I could always go talk to every one of my professors about their class and they helped me. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? On campus, out in the woods or on the grass between the Manor and the student Union. When spring finally arrived, it was nice by the pool. Off campus, the beach, downtown, or Mt. Hood What would you have done differently at L&C if you could do it all over again? Not much--the school was nearly a perfect fit for me at that time. Realistically, it would have made things easier if I had a better appreciation of the long-term picture and what was needed to pursue desired careers. I still find it hard to believe that there were no requirements for a statistics class (at that time) to obtain a B.S. Degree--that was the one educational deficit that plagued me for quite a few years.

What was your favorite class? Upper level Biology classes -- ecology with Stallcup (because I was able to do very minor research with fish) or invertebrate Zoo with Darrow (because he forced us to pay attention). If you have visited the campus since graduating, what has been the most surprising change? Went to the 15th reunion--didn't recognize my classmates and wasn't sure what to expect, but it was fun. Took a "look- see" trip with my daughter 5 years ago to check out the school as a potential college. So many new buildings--thus many of the stories I told her about my time there were only memories. It is a different campus now. How have undergrad students changed since you graduated? Instant technology--it's all cell phones, Facebook, etc. There is a consequent much higher and shorter expectation of "success"--hiring and securing positions in one's field. The one bright spot I did see during my visit was that it appeared that the new biology professors are guiding their students more strictly down the approved path of publishing manuscripts, which didn't happen when I was there. What did you do the first year after graduation? My main concern was avoiding the Vietnam draft, so I spent a lot of time doing nonsensical things, but I was successful @ that goal for a while. Immediately after graduation, I was able to secure an entry level job at a local tool factory because my roommate's father -in-law was a personnel director there. So I spent 6 months making screwdrivers and chisels and reflecting on the value of my Lewis and Clark education. However, I was accepted to graduate school at the University of Oregon and University of California at Santa Barbara. It was a tough decision, but since the tuition0 differential was about 10 to 1, it was easy to go to Eugene. If you are not able to attend the reunion, what would you like to say to your classmates as they gather on campus to celebrate? A lot of people will say "I wanted to come, but something came up". In my case, it's true--some medical treatments have precluded me from participating in this milestone event. After I looked through the participant list, I realized that many of you do not know more (or care to?), but we are all part of a special class. That's why I have taken the time to put some of my thoughts down for you. We were probably together in some of the general classes, or maybe I knew someone on your floor or your roommate was hanging out with my best friends. It doesn't matter--you probably enjoyed Cannon Beach, shopping at Dirty Fred's, and the Rose Parade, regardless of your major. We all were trying to figure out a lot of important things at that time. Without knowing it, you may have contributed to my education-hopefully I did the same with yours. If you have taken the time to read this far, then I will extend you an invitation to "catch up". The only real perk I can promise is a lot of information and a free tour of Yellowstone if you are so inclined (but you might have to bring some seafood to make things fair!). Lewis and Clark truly is a school that helped us to places that we never thought would happen!!

Since college, I've lived in Eugene, Oregon, while attending law school, and since then in the Portland and Vancouver area. I've traveled in Europe (some but not as much as I hope to do in the future) and to many parts of the US (I've not been to the deep South -- that also may happen in the future). If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Western Oregon or Washington are the best. Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? I attended the University of Oregon School of Law for three years starting the fall after graduation from L&C. I was granted my law degree in June 1975. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now? I don't think I thought that far ahead. What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? Continuing my law practice into senior years (on a reduced time basis) and pursuing avocations. Perhaps also engaging in some non-profit service activities -- as yet undecided. What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world? Dr. Don Balmer for his very pragmatic view of government and politics. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? A time of growing personally by becoming an independent and educated adult. Great personal friendships and times together with friends. The beautiful campus. The challenges and joy of learning so much that was new and interesting. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? Lambda Lounge in Platt Hall. The main dining hall during meal time. What would you have done differently at L&C if you could do it all over again? Appreciated the beauty of the campus even more. Gone on an overseas off-campus study program. What was your favorite class? It was not my favorite at the time but, looking back on it, I think Western Civ. in freshman year was a very important class for helping understand the history of the world we live in now. If you have visited the campus since graduating, what has been the most surprising change? The buildings behind the library where once there was only forest in our days. How have undergrad students changed since you graduated? I can't say about L&C undergrads. But going by my sons (one is in college and the other a recent college grad), the greater knowledge and "sophistication" about the world from all the media information that is available to them and the ability to travel

Where have you lived and traveled? What are your favorite places in the world? I'm from Texas, originally and have lived in Oregon, California and New Jersey. In the last few years, I've taken two memorable trips. One was a trip to Iceland with my husband. What an incredible country! The other was a trip I took to India, Cambodia and Thailand with a 70 year old friend. As a

family, we traveled extensively in the Caribbean. I particularly enjoyed the Cayman Islands and Bonaire. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Really hard to decide this one! Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? After Lewis and Clark, I took classes at various community colleges and universities in pyschology, business and technology. In 1991, I completed a Masters degree in Cognitive Psychology at Rutgers University. In 1999, I completed a Master's certificate in Project Management at George Washington University's School of Business and Public Management and in 2003, I completed a Master of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University. Since then, I've taken continuing education credits through the State Library of New Jersey and various library consortia in New Jersey. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now? Surely you jest! I had thought I'd be more involved in politics and less cynical about my fellow man. I also had no idea that I'd work at Bell Labs and AT&T. I thought I'd be a nice therapist with a small practice in a small college town. If I hadn't spent so much time at KLC and learned so much about technology by participating in the radio station and helping to computerize the music library, the career I actually ended up with might never have been possible. What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? Right now, I'd like to get through the transition to retirement. I'd like to be able to let go of old goals, dreams and aspirations and to be able to embrace my current realities. In short, I'd like to live in the now a lot more than I ever have. What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world? This is really hard to decide. One of my professors in library school was the son of one of my professors when I was at LC, so indirectly, that prof had a real and surprising impact on me. When I think of LC professors who impacted my world view, I think of Susan Kirschner, Ron Kramer, and Nos Rassekh, John Crampton and James Karle. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? Naturally, a lot of these memories have to do with my friends but I remember that the faculty were very engaged with the students and seemed always to have time to discuss things with us. There was more interesting talk going on outside of classrooms - in the Trail Room and faculty offices and faculty homes - than I have ever encountered since. Because of the political and social changes of the times, we had plenty to discuss and the faculty all seemed ready to jump right in. I also think that the size of the college created an atmosphere of freedom and acceptance. If a student was active, creative and capable, that student could do almost anything. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? I think I spent most of my time in the Trail Room or KLC. In town, I remember going to Rose's for giant deli sandwiches and huge slices of cake. What was your favorite class?

Page 41: CLASS OF 1972 PROFILE RESPONSES - Lewis & Clark College

No one fav. John Crampton's section in Western Civ was invigorating. All of the communications classes turned out to very useful. As a librarian who recruits and mentors future librarians, Susan Kirschner's women's lit. classes were a lifelong inspiration If you are not able to attend the reunion, what would you like to say to your classmates as they gather on campus to celebrate? I wish I could be there with you. We were all so important to each other then and helped form the people we are now. I hope I can make it to the 45th reunion. Colleges like Lewis and Clark are rare and deserve our continuing support, even if you can only give a little.

Sandy Osborne City: Bozeman State: MT Work Information Business: Montana State University Position: Associate Professor Do you have children? What are their names and ages? Yes - Dr. Balmer taught us to give back as we have been given so much. I also work part-time as a Chaplain at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. What is the professional or personal achievement of which you are the most proud? Bringing a faculty union to Montana State University. No land grant university in the USA had been organized into a union in 35 years. I am president of the tenure track union. It was a 5 year process and our first collective bargaining unit was ratified by the Board of Regents in November 2011. Where have you lived and traveled? What are your favorite places in the world? We have lived in Bozeman for 25 years. Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? Masters at Washington State University (Child and Family Studies) PhD at University of Tennessee (Human Ecology) MA at Seattle University (Theology and Ministry) If money were no object, you would... visit far away friends more, and return to all the places we visited on our Overseas Study Program in the British Isles. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now? I was not thinking that far ahead! What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards?

Returning to the island of Iona (almost all on the British Isles groups says so). We had a 40 year British Isles ''71reunion with Don and Betty Balmer and sons last summer in Portland. What a blessing to all! What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world? Professor Don Balmer and his wife Betty. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? Forest Hall, the Chapel, Templeton and meals, Fir Acres Theatre, and cobblestones and rhododendrons. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? Near the Manor House, Rose Gardens, the Chapel. What did you do the first year after graduation? Returned to Scotland and a host family for the Homestay Program when I went to the British Isles and worked for the Scottish Episcopal church for a year. If you are not able to attend the reunion, what would you like to say to your classmates as they gather on campus to celebrate? I believe we have much to be grateful for and Lewis and Clark College helped shape that awareness.

Jim Ouellet City: Playa del Rey State: CA Work Information Business: Self employed Position: M'Lord Do you have children? What are their names and ages? Professionally: I've published about 40 research papers on motorcycle accidents, injuries, helmets, etc. Some of them were pretty good. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Good surf and warm water: Hawaii, Costa Rica, Queensland Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? I went to grad school at Arizona State for a PhD in neuropsych but dropped out with a Master's degree. Returned to school off and on for another 10 years for more math and science classes. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now?

It never crossed my mind What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? Earl Butz got fired from his job as Secretary of Agriculture in 1976 for describing what turns out to be my goals. What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world? None, really. Maybe Kathy McLaughlin. I arrived at LC after 3 semesters of screwing up at other colleges and two years in the Army, so I had a head full of ideas and opinions already. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? Not so much specific memories, but LC was the place where I finally discovered that learning is not just interesting, it's huge fun. In that way, Lewis and Clark turned my life around and saved me, probably from myself. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? I spent most of my first year at LC sleeping in my girlfriend's bed at Akin Hall, the all-girl dorm. I was discreet and respectful but all the girls on her floor knew about it. Off campus at the Open Seas bar in Lake Oswego. What would you have done differently at L&C if you could do it all over again? No girlfriend. What was your favorite class? Bernie Hinshaw's art history classes, hands down. In Spring 1972 he taught a class with a professor from the music department called Music and Art in Modern Times. It was a real eye-opener to see the parallels between music and art at different times. If you have visited the campus since graduating, what has been the most surprising change? The one time I did, I felt like I was visiting an old lover who has since moved on. It was nice to see her, but it felt like I didn't belong there anymore; she belongs to the new kids who go there now. How have undergrad students changed since you graduated? They're so much smarter and wiser than I ever was. What did you do the first year after graduation? Nothing worth mentioning. It was a lost year between college and grad school.

I volunteer for the Grant Park Newsletter and at the Northeast Community Center. It is important to put yourself into the community if you value a vibrant, healthy place to live and work. What is the professional or personal achievement of which you are the most proud? Professionally, earning my Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Oregon was a high point. Since then, I have received the highest honors the college I work for gives for both teaching and scholarship. Personally, I am most proud of being mother to a great son and wife to a wonderful husband. Where have you lived and traveled? What are your favorite places in the world? At the close of my overseas study program to Vienna, Austria in 1971, I received my B.A. from L & C and moved to Thessaloniki, Greece where I taught at an international school for two years. I have traveled throughout Europe and England. Most recently my husband and I have hiked the Inca trail in Peru (2008) and toured Spain (2010). We will be enjoying Italy during the L & C Reunion this year. We will be gone for three weeks, June 6 - 27. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I'm fine with Oregon, as long as I can travel to see other places. Did you continue (or are you continuing) your education after Lewis & Clark? What did you study? What is the last degree you earned? After working in Greece, I earned an M.A.T. in Applied Linguistics from the School for International Training (now called World Learning) in Brattleboro, VT. After working in the field of ESL/EFL for 15 years, I went back to school and received my Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Oregon. If money were no object, you would... Set up a foundation similar to what Bill and Melinda Gates have done and try to change the world for the better. When you were at Lewis & Clark where did you see yourself at the age you are now? I had absolutely no idea. What are the goals/dreams/aspirations you are working towards? I always want to continue learning. That is one reason why I like teaching at the college level. I must continue to challenge myself intellectually; I am a part of an institution that values educating the whole person. Learning takes on many forms. I aspire to be open to possibilities--to never close myself off from new ways of thinking or better ways of demonstrating my values. What Lewis & Clark professors made the biggest impact on the way you think about the world?

First term of my Freshman year for Western Civilization I had Dr. John Crampton , Following him, winter term, I had Dr. Karlin Kapper-Johnson, and in the spring Dr. John Brown. I cannot think of a more intimidating threesome of professors for my initiation into my college studies. All three had a tremendous impact on my growth simply due to the encounter I experienced with their respective intellects. Later, I enjoyed studying voice with Sally Benson and will always hold dear the instruction in music history which I received from Dr. Reinhard Pauly--also our group leader for the Austria Overseas Study program. What memories come to mind when you think about Lewis & Clark? -Walking across the reflection pond when it froze over in the winter. - Another student and I took our sleeping bags down to lower campus and slept out in the rose garden (and were caught by Security). - Performing in Evans at Music Hour and with various L & C music groups. -Choir tour during Spring Break and the "Glarum" sound. - The Overseas Study group to Austria, March - August, 1971. What were your favorite places to hang out as a student, on campus and off? I was a music major. When I was attending L & C, music majors did not "hang out." We took breaks between rehearsals, we sat in the music lounge (such as it was then) and did homework, and we practiced, practiced, practiced. What would you have done differently at L&C if you could do it all over again? I would have gone through my course of study at a slower pace. I took overloads each term and pushed myself to get through quickly and graduate early. These are precious years in a person's life. I would have enjoyed having a true "senior year." What was your favorite class? The courses we took for our area study on the Austria overseas study were wonderful. If you have visited the campus since graduating, what has been the most surprising change? The college infrastructure has "grown up." The new buildings are impressive. Also, I think the faculty hiring represents a more rigorous, competitive market for positions at t four-year college. There also seems to be much more collaboration between students and professors in regard to research work. How have undergrad students changed since you graduated? I attended Lewis and Clark from 1968 - 1971 (class of '72, but I graduated early). Those years were unlike any that the college had seen prior, or since. I think students now do not have the luxury of being political in the same way that we did. We were idealistic and in many ways very naive. Students now are more practical and more sophisticated. What did you do the first year after graduation? I taught Music, Speech & Drama and German at a small international school in Thessaloniki, Greece. If you are not able to attend the reunion, what would you like to say to your classmates as they gather on campus to celebrate? Happy Trails!
