Primary Library Practices

• two library periods allotted• one period exclusively for reading children’s magazines. (For this, multiple copies of magazines shall be procured from the main library)

Primary Library Practices• The class teacher may conduct activities such

as • story telling, • read aloud, • book talks/discussions, • competitions

– (book review writing, – reading, – story telling, – news reading, – book jacket/bookmark/poster designing, – developing a story, etc),

Primary Library Practices• assembly programmes

–( book reviews, stage conversations based on book themes, dramatizations, puppets),

–awards (best reader of the class), –exhibitions/displays, preparation of wall magazines, scrap books, etc

Develop Language Skills• Introduce the book.

• Tell about the book, but don’t give away the ending!

• Tell about your favourite part of the book or make a

connection.

• Give a recommendation (e.g., If you like..., you will

love this book or I recommend this book to anyone

who likes...).

–for primary students to make them aware of library, books and reading.

• The librarian’s Role:–support the class teachers –to set up class libraries and organize related activities/events.

It is the place where students can go to look at or read books.

Importance of Class Library• Facilitates regular reading• Helps developing reading habit• Accelerate growth in reading skill• Improves literacy & comprehension• Provide opportunity for reluctant readers

Problems & Possible Solutions

• Quality of children’s books available is not as per standards

• Number of books not adequate• Same books for same class for the

whole year• Teachers not getting enough time• No storage space
