Title victory a long time coming for Hurricane s Homer
Chris Homer could have been recognized as The Tribune's Coach of the Year any of the past three seasons.
A blocked field goal in 2010 would have done it. In 2009, it might have just taken a bit stiffer defense. In 2008? A stiff wind.
Instead, his Hurricane Tigers lost by a hair each year in the Class 3A state championship game, each year to Juan Diego. Sympathetic Figure of the Year? Absolutely. If it existed they would have long ago named the trophy after him. Top coach? Always someone else.
Until now. "I think everybody just
felt sorry for me, maybe," Homer said last week, two weeks after his Tigers finally broke their curse by topping Desert Hills 21-0 in a snow globe title game at Rice-Ec-cles Stadium.
Perhaps Homer's finest coaching trait is that he kept at it.
They say if you fail, try and try again. But a third try? A fourth?
At some point a man has no choice but to give up.
This year, Homer went
back to the basics. Each season before this one, on the eve of the title game, the Hurricane players got together and they got emotional. The seniors gave their parting words. They reminisced and they cried.
Then they lost. "We really approached
this year as a game," Homer said. "We're going to just play the game. We kind of kept our week the same, and we cut out a lot of these extra things that we did to make it special. I think it helped us."
Half a decade ago, a contingent of parents was fed up with the lack of success at Hurricane and circulated a petition that Homer and his staff be replaced.
"As a coaching staff, man, we've been through a lot," Homer said.
He wasn't even talking about the losses.
"Our philosophies are set in stone," he said, "and we like what we do and we've kind of earned our spurs, so to speak, over our 10 years together."
Just like he's earned this award over the past four.
Hurricane coach Chris Homer holds the championship trophy after his team defeated Desert Hills. The Tigers had reached the title game the three previous years, but dropped each contest.

Lone Peak's Hansen shined in spotlight all season Class 5A » How could anyone have missed Lone Peak quarterback Chase Hansen? He was the most electric player in high school football this fall. Here are the facts: He led Class 5A in total rushing yards (1,404) and was one of just two 5A QBs to pass for more than 3,000 yards. He led Lone Peak to wins over Bingham, Jordan and, in the championship game, last year's runner-up, Fremont.
Nelson's drive led to broken record, Logan state title Class 4A » Logan's D.J. Nelson was in the stands when his brother, BYU's Riley Nelson, lost a title game with the Grizzlies in 2005, then won in 2007. With a family history embedded in Logan football, Nelson's path was set to be an integral part of the program. Nelson's drive this season can be measured in his numbers: nearly 3,500 yards passing, more than 1,600 yards rushing and 73 total touchdowns.
Hurricane's Scott took direct route to victory Class 3A » Hurricane running back Brian Scott never had anything but a straightforward approach when it came to running the football.
The shortest path through an obstacle is through it. When the 6-foot-2, 220-pound fullback lined up, his opponents knew he was coming. Hard. And there wasn't much anyone could do about it.
Carter was Manti's emotional leader Class 2A » Throughout linebacker Landon Carter's career, whenever Manti coach Cole Meacham had a word of advice for his linebacker, there was never any back talk or defensiveness. Carter worked on his weaknesses, diligently and quietly, until the coaches had few to pick on. Carter being a role model to his teammates made him indispensable to the Templars in their championship season.
Fierceness set apart Duchesne's Despain Class 1A » It's over for Braid-en Despain. In two years as Duchesne's starting running back, the fiercest piece of an unbelievably talented smalltown school, he accumulated nearly 3,000 rushing yards, 30 touchdowns and two state titles. One of the state's toughest runners, he hopes he can catch on at Dixie State or Southern Utah. Otherwise, he'll hold on to his two years starring at a small school in the Uintah Basin, doing some things his brothers did, and others that they didn't.
