Dear Parishioners, I hope that you are all having a good summer, and getting some rest and relaxation. By the time you receive this the 4th of July may have already passed, but the 4th of July is an important holiday for our country, as it is the celebration of our Independence. We live in a country that offers us many wonderful freedoms that other countries don't have. One of those freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution is the Freedom of Religion. With that freedom we are able to worship and practice our faith in an open

and free way. Over the last decade, sadly, some of that freedom of religion has started to be taken away. As a result of that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) along with many lay leaders organized what was called a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21st until July 4th. For those of you who didn't know, a fortnight is 14 days. During that time people were asked to pray for religious freedom each day, and throughout the country each diocese had its own rally or special Mass to pray for religious freedom. While the Fortnight may be over, it is certainly never too late to pray for religious freedom and educate ourselves on the issues facing our country and the Church. The USCCB website (usccb.org) has many wonderful materials for your study and benefit. Please take advantage of that resource, especially when elections come up each year. Our Bridge to Greystone project is moving along, and I am still biting my nails that it will be completed by the time school starts. If for some reason it is not, we do have contingency plans. If you have not yet made a gift to the campaign, it is not too late, you can call the parish office, and we have pledge cards. It's exciting to see all the progress, and it will be even more exciting to have the dedication in the fall when we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of our current Church building. We have commissioned a commemorative Christmas ornament of our church, which will be available for sale later in the year. There are only 300, so when they become available we will let you know. Also, in celebration of the dedication of the Church and so that we can give back to someone else a portion of our blessings, we are going to do another HABITAT for HUMANITY build this fall. I hope that many of you can volunteer and will donate to help pay for it. I hope that over the summer many of you have taken the opportunity when you travel to visit churches in other towns, states or countries. It can be very educational and interesting to see how the Mass is celebrated in different places, and it also fulfills the Third Commandment. As we get ready for the fall, we have many things planned to help enrich our spirituality, especially when we begin the GATHER program again. Last spring over 400 of us participated in the program in more than 30 small groups. May God bless us all as we strive to build His kingdom.

Christ the King Catholic ChurchFirst Communion 2012

Christ the King's First Communion Class of 2012

Since intant baptism is customary in the Catholic Church, a child's First Communion is often their first sacramental memory. Going from approaching the altar with crossed arms for a blessing to receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord

Jesus Christ is a spiritual milestone. Let us pray that this Class of 2012 will grow ever stronger in their love of the Eucharist.

The following missionaries from Christ the King will travel to Piura, Peru, in July. We ask that you keep them and the people of Piura in your prayers

throughout their journey. May God continue to bless our missionaries and the people of Parroquia Santissimo Sacramento.

Words cannot capture the feeling of being on a mission trip in Peru. This trip was filled with so

much love, and it was very simple to find Christ in every face that we saw. From setting up a woman’s baby shower to delivering the Family-to-Family pack-ages of food, we got to truly experience their lives. One of my favorite activities was handing out

clothes to people along the side of the road. It was amazing to see the look on the peoples’ faces when the received a new hat or shirt that they weren’t expecting. It was also an incredible experience to go to Mass every single day. The Peru-vians put Christ at the forefront of their lives and arrange their schedules around Mass instead of the other way around. Being in the presence of such great faith helped me to explore my own. I would definitely take the opportunity to go again, and I would encourage anyone wavering on the idea to take the plunge, because it is an experience that I will never forget.

I was once again warmly welcomed by the people of Piura, Peru this May.

For the past eight years, I have traveled to Santisimo Sacramento to be greeted by the same smiling faces. Each time, I am awed by this remarkable group of people who have so little but maintain their steadfast faith and relentless optimism. So much has changed since my first trip. The most recent change is the new school. During my last visit, I was painting primer on the walls of a half-constructed building, and this time I found myself in front of a classroom attempting to teach English to eager first graders. Next door to the school is the hospice, which I also remember as a construction site just a few short years ago. It is now occupied by elderly patients who receive quality care that they would not have access to otherwise. These are just two examples of the many projects that Father Uhen and his team have worked diligently on to improve the lives of the people of Piura, projects made possible due to the generous donations of Christ the King parishioners and others around the country. I can’t wait to return and see what other changes are in store.

The Peru Mission Trip is something that words cannot describe. I went

expecting to help the people in the City of Piura, but in all reality I think they helped me more than I helped them. My faith has never been so strong be-fore. This has been an experience that I believe will affect my life forever. The people there have so little, yet so much. The overwhelming amount of faith and joy, given the conditions they have been put in, is inspiring. They were so thankful for everything we did, and it truly humbled me in a way noth-ing else probably ever could. Every night we had prayer and talked about our day, and I don't think there was ever a night where we didn't discuss how, despite the fact that they lived in houses the size of our living

rooms, didn't have working bathrooms, and didn't have the newest technology, they are happier than anyone in Ameri-ca. They have an incredible faith that is so pure and true, it was hard for any of us to understand. They put everything they have in God and in the Church, which unfortunately is something that we were all a little unfamiliar with. Going to their homes was the hard-est part of the trip. We would walk in, and while we were in shock of what we were seeing, they were so proud and wanted to show us everything. It was difficult to take everything in while we had the family of the home wanting to show us every part of their home, which to us was shoddy, but to them was all they had.

My favorite part was driving through the villages. When we drove, we usu-ally sat in the truck bed. And as we drove through the villages, everyone waved at us. I believe that they saw the church symbol on the truck and knew why we were there. I have never felt so welcome and so loved before. They made us feel like they really wanted to get to know each and every one of us. In school we are taught that Jesus is in everyone, but before this trip I nev-er truly believed it. No matter what we did or where we went during the week, we could see Jesus shining vibrantly through every person we came across. I definitely am looking forward to my next trip to Peru! I hope I will be able to return every year.Angelina is second from the left in the picture on this page

We all had such an amazing time down in Piura, Peru. It is the defi-

nition of a life-changing experience, es-pecially for someone like myself, who had never been out of the country prior to the mission trip. The most powerful experience throughout the trip was just meeting the people face-to-face and making their day by dropping off bags of rice and beans and giving the chil-dren suckers or other sweet candy. The girls at the orphanage were very sweet and took the time to make us bracelets. The people were so gra-cious and grateful for the slightest of things. It makes one prioritize their own

life, as they see these extremely poor people living the happiest of lives, be-cause they live through Christ. Perhaps the most underrated part of the trip is bonding with the other mis-sionaries and also the people at the residency with Father Joe. I became Facebook friends with Victor, an 18 year old altar boy and missionary, who is one of the happiest people on Earth and brought a smile to the faces of ev-eryone around him. This was a com-mon theme throughout the trip. I would encourage everyone read-ing this paragraph to become involved somehow, some way, in helping the

people in Piura, because the results are visible. I had the opportunity to visit the school, Cristo El Rey, which Christ the King sponsors. I got to see the bath-rooms, the playground equipment, and the classrooms, which the students' Pennies for Peru created. American money goes a long way down there. We are so fortunate to live in Ameri-ca that it is hard to understand the pov-erty in Piura. There is nothing like it in America. The memory of this mission trip will live with me forever, and I hope to return to Piura in the future.

It is extremely difficult for me to accurately describe my thoughts on the trip, other than it was one of the most

influential and inspirational experiences of my life. No in-trinsic happiness can compare. The relationships I devel-oped with the people, the missionaries, and the country are equal to that of a family. To actually be there and see the impact you make, to see the donations and hard work of the Church go into action, is indescribable. I constantly find myself missing Peru and looking forward to returning as soon as possible.

Four Pillars of the Catholic Faithcreed sacrament

It is truly amazing how quickly our congrega-tion has become comfortable with the new

translation of the Mass. Sure, there may be that one spot when you revert to the old trans-lation - usually at a point when the hymnal's not open..."and with your spirit," "it is right and just," "my soul shall be healed." But no one has flubbed a line that'll lose them next year's Tony award. The spirit is light, the smiles reas-suring, the glances sympathetic, and the eye-rolling amused. And contrary to detracting from reverence in the Mass, these moments help us to celebrate our humanity, our comradery, our presence at the Mass. Know that God is with us.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of

God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. ForoursakehewascrucifiedunderPontiusPilate,he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through theprophets. And one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Be on the lookout this fall for Coffee & Catholicism,

a brief time between Masses each week for adult formation and

conversation.

Four Pillars of the Catholic Faithprayermorality

The Ten Commandments are the foundation of Christian

morality. Morality...that word has become laden with connotations that have

led people to avoid it. We too often lean away from morals toward "non-judgmentality." At the other end of the spectrum is the all-too-common danger of equating sinner and sin, failing to approach with love those people in our lives who truly need guidance to help them amend their ways. How to strike the balance? Look to the Mass, look to the sacraments, look to our Faith for the answer. But most of all, look to Our Lord Jesus Christ, in scripture, in prayer and in the eyes and hearts of those around us.

The 10 Commandments

Thou shalt not have other gods besides Me

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain

Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day Honor thy father and thy mother

Thou shalt not murderThou shalt not commit adultery

Thou shalt not stealThou shalt not bear false witness

against thy neighbor Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods

By provocation By praise or flattery

We did it! We received full accredi-tation! This past year, Christ the

King Catholic School underwent an extensive accreditation review process for the Oklahoma Council of Catholic Schools Accrediting Association (OCC-SAA). This group is recognized by the State Department of Education. The process includes the review of an annual report that is written by our school and a team of educators who do a thorough in-house visit and vali-dation every seven years. It is signifi-cantly more involved than being state accredited and requires schools to do a detailed self-examination. A team of six members from the Tulsa Archdiocese visited the CK School for four days in early March. A copy of their report has just been approved by the Board of Di-rectors for OCCSAA. The report vali-dates every single area of review and includes suggestions, many of which are already being implemented, and commendations. Where do we go from here? Next year, the School Advisory Council and faculty will review the current strategic

plan and develop a new one for the next seven years. We will continually strive for excellence and to provide a quality, Catholic education at a reason-able cost for parents. We are grateful and humbled by the accreditation re-port. Special thanks go to Amy Feigh-ny, who served as the chairperson for the accreditation visit, and to Robert Crump, Jenny Richard, and Tanya Brown, who along with school princi-pal Karen Carter served as the steer-ing committee for accreditation. We are indebted as well to Jayne Clarke, who assisted with the compilation of the ex-tensive report. If you have any ques-tions about our accreditation or about the report, please feel free to contact the school office.

Jimmie Lucille McGuire was a long-time parishioner at Christ the King

until her death in 1993. Nineteen years after her death, her estate trust was dis-persed, and Christ the King received a bequest of $20,000 in early May of this year. The $10,000 "seed money" for our upcoming Habitat build also came to the parish through a bequest specifi-cally designated for that purpose. There are many ways that you can leave a legacy to sustain the mis-sion of Christ the King Church and to ensure the long-term financial stability of Christ the King School. Talk to your financial or tax advi-sor about gifts of stock or other assets, a beneficiary designation on a life in-surance policy, 401(k) plan or IRA, a bequest in your will, life income gifts, or charitable lead trusts. Planned gifts can offer many advantages to help you to meet your overall financial goals and to help the long-term sustainability of Christ the King. Thoughtful gift plan-ning can enhance both the value of your estate and your bequest to Christ the King.

Date Work to be Completed # Needed Type of Work

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the dedication of our church building on

September 16, 1952, Christ the King will build another home in cooperation with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. We need to raise a total of $80,000, but because of a generous bequest and other donations, we have $10,000 on hand. Work is slated to begin on September 15th, and we should be finished in time for the home to be dedicated on November 10th, the day before the dedication of our new junior high building. As you can see by the schedule below, the number of actual volunteers needed on any given day is not that large. Watch your bulletins for sign-up information. In the meantime we need to raise $70,000, and this is where we need

everyone's help. If every single family of Christ the King would contribute only $50, we would meet our goal! Of course we recognize that some families are facing medical issues, unemployment or other circumstances

that limit the amount of money they can contribute. But we hope that

all who are able will donate to this wonderful project in

thanksgiving for the many blessings bestowed upon our parish family over the years. To donate to the 2012

CK Habitat Build, please make checks payable to Christ the King and note "Habitat" on the memo line. You also may donate online at www.ckokc.org/habitat. We would love to have the money raised by the time we be-gin work. Want more information about the build? Louis Gasbarra is our Go-To Guy. You may reach him at 259-9120.

Students beginning their 2012-2014 preparation for the Sacrament

of Confirmation are in the process of choosing sponsors. Sponsors will be involved from the beginning of the pro-cess starting this year. The confirmation sponsor is someone who journeys with the candi-date during their sacramental prepara-tion. The Church recognizes that your sponsor is a partner in the your forma-tion and asks you to be conscious of their influence, trusting that they will act in your best interest and in Jesus’ name. The sponsor will be asked to for-mally present you to the Archbishop at the time of the Confirmation ritual.

What the Catholic Church says about sponsors…

The role of a sponsor is to "see that the confirmed person acts [as] a true witness to Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations connected with this sacrament."

What Christ the King asks of a sponsor…

During Knights in Service our kids...

This year at SKY VBS we learned that no matter who we are, no

matter where we are, and no matter what we feel, we can always TRUST GOD! Through the Bible study and the Bible plays put on for the children by our youth volunteers, particpants studied the stories of Lazarus, the Roman Centurion whose favored servant was ill, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the breakfast on the beach with Jesus and the Apostles after the Resurrection. Our children (161 of them!) played games, sang songs, and made crafts that all reinforced the love of God in our lives. At snack time the children enjoyed healthy treats while hearing about Catholic saints who show us how to trust God. And then they focused on Faith, Hope, Love, and Patience, as well as how to recognize these virtues in their own lives. Our children learned that throughout history God has always been there for us and will continue to care for us. We need only to trust in Him! Thank you to the many (90!) volunteers who made VBS such a success this year. Without you our programs would not be possible. Thank you to the parents who have entrusted their children's formal (and fun!) religious education to Christ the King. And thank you to our wonderful children whose growing faith inspires our ministry.

Becoming

Nichols Hills is a great neighborhood to run or walk through, and on any

given day, especially at this time of year, you can see runners and walkers in small groups or on their own getting their workout in. A couple of parishio-ners have suggested that a runner's group be formed at Christ the King. If you are interested in forming or partici-pating in a parish running group, please contact Mariam Daly at 596-7086.

The adult choir at Christ the King is open to anyone 18 years of age

or older. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings, beginning Au-gust 22nd. The adult choir sings every week, usually at the 10am Mass but oc-casionally at one of the other weekend Masses. This choir also sings for ma-jor feast days, such as All Saints Day, Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. The handbell choir is open to any-one from the 8th grade through adults. In order to join this choir, you must be able to read music proficiently. This choir plays at different Masses through-out the year. Handbell choir rehearsals are held in the church from 6-6:45pm every Wednesday, beginning Septem-ber 5th. Anyone wishing to learn more about the adult choir or the handbell choir should contact music director Ed-win Day at 848-8397 or [email protected].

CKingSoles Christ the King youth are invited to a

Come Run With Us!

Christ the King is assessing the interest among our parishioners in

a Catholic Mother's Day Out program at Christ the King. For many years the parish office received frequent calls from people seeking a Catholic Mother's Day Out program, but until recently we were not in a position to institute one at CK. As you know over the past year we have been improving our nursery to meet the many needs of the parish and school. One of our more ambi-tious goals is to create a Mother's Day Out program. This idea was conceived early this year, and approval was made at the beginning of May. We are ex-tremely excited about this new program and look forward to making it a suc-cess. We are dedicated to creating a faith-based learning curriculum for our youth and a safe and fun place for both

babies and toddlers to enjoy! We have everything we need to start a Mother's Day Out program...everything, that is, but the children! If you are the mother of a young child, please take a moment to complete our Mother's Day Out on-line survey by visiting the parish web-site at www.ckokc.org and clicking on the survey link in the lefthand column of the home page. You may go directly to the survey at: http://www.surveymon-key.com/s/GV6Q6VN or by scanning the QR code below.

Beat the summer heat with a cool and healthy bowl of fresh

gazpacho. You can really crank up the "good-for-you" factor by using organic vegetables.

Gazpacho Andaluz(recipe by Joan Mary Putnam)

2 large tomatoes, peeled1 large cucumber, pared and halved1 medium onion, peeled and halved1 medium green pepper, quartered and seeded⅛ tsp. coarsely ground black pepper20 oz. can tomato juice1 pimento, drained⅓ C extra virgin olive oil⅓ C red wine vinegar¼ tsp. Tabasco1½ tsp. salt1 clove garlic, slit½ C packaged croutons¼ C chopped chives

In a blender, combine 1 tomato, half the cucumber, half the onion, a green pepper quarter, the pimento and ½ C of the tomato juice. Blend at high speed for 30 seconds or until the vegetables are pureed. In a large bowl, mix the pureed vegetables with remaining tomato juice, ¼ C of the olive oil, vinegar, Tabasco, salt and black pepper. Refrigerate mixture, covered, until well-chilled (about 2 hours). Chop separately the remaining tomato, cucumber, onion and green pepper. Place each of these and the croutons in separate bowls. Serve as accompaniments. Just before serving time, crush garlic. Add to chilled soup, mixing well. Sprinkle with chopped chives. Serve the gazpacho in chilled bowls. Everyone helps himself to the accompaniements.Makes 6 servings.

Look for your invitation in early August.

Early August is the time of year when we ask our parishioners to turn their

attention to Christ the King's local sister school, North Highland Elementary (NHE). Many of the students at NHE face special challenges in their family lives, challenges which affect their schoolwork, ability to concentrate, self-esteem, and more. For some of these children, their tutor may be the only stable or positive relationship that they have with an adult other than their classroom teacher, whose attention is divided among a couple dozen children. If you love children and would like to make a difference in the life of a young student who is struggling academically, please consider becoming at tutor at NHE. The time commitment is one hour a week when school is in session. There is a two-week period at the end of October when tutoring does not take

place. Tutors receive guidance from their student's teacher regarding which subjects need the most attention, and the teacher will keep your student's folder supplied with work for your tutoring sessions. If you want to provide additional or more challenging material for your student, you may contact the NHE media librarian, Christ the King's own Carol Lindsay. She is a great source of grade-level instructional material as well as encouragement. She also can tell you more about the students at NHE and their great need for positive, one-on-one guidance. For more detailed information about what is involved in tutoring at NHE, or if you know that you'd like to volunteer for the 2012-2013 school year, please contact Leo Morrison at 842-0012.
