Welcome to the 2019 Fall Edition of the OHJA InGate!

That’s a wrap on another action packed summer of Ontario Gold Horse Shows and featured OHJA programs. Thank you to Angelstone, CEP, Ten Sixty and Wesley Clover for their generous support of the OHJA. I hope that everyone had the opportunity to participate in one or more of the great programs offered this season. Now that the regular seasonshows are complete the OHJA is gearing up for the Awards Banquet on Saturday Nov. 30th. We are very excited about the new venue at Woodbine Raceway and hope to see you there. Go to our website early to buy your tickets. It’s going to be a fun night out!

I want to take this opportunity to address the challenges we had with membership processing and reporting this past season. We got a lot of feedback from our members and have made some changes to help make it more user friendly and efficient. Look for some tips in this issue of the InGate to get a head start for 2020. We will also be adding some joining/renewal how to’s on our website. Remember you need to have all your memberships in place prior to competing to collect points towards the OHJA year-end awards so make sure you renew all your memberships on time!

This is the time of the year it’s really busy at the OHJA. All our committees are currently evaluating programs running in 2019 and planning for next year. If you want to volunteer to be on a Committee or have a great idea let us know. We also have two Board Member spots open that will be voted on at the AGM on Saturday Nov. 30th at the Banquet. If you are interested in contributing an idea or joining a Committee or the Board contact us at [email protected].

Good luck to all our OHJA members that will be competing at the RAWF, travelling down south this winter or staying home to practice for next year. Be safe, enjoy your horses and most of all have fun!

In 2019, the OHJA introduced a new Top Score Hunter Awards Program at the Autumn Classic held at the Caledon Equestrian Park.

The awards were presented to top scoring horses in the 3’0, 3’3 and 3’6 divisions and were calculated based on the highest total of scores in each of the classic, handy and derby classes.

The OHJA was proud to present each winner with an OHJA embroidered cooler.

Behind the Scenes with Jackie Tattersall – Head of OHJA Prizes and Awards

Some of the fantastic OHJA Prizes. Photo courtesy of RingSide Media.

Every year at the Annual OHJA Banquet we walk into the facility to see a beautiful display of trophies, ribbons and chairs. Did you know that this awards table is organized and assembled every year by Jackie Tattersall? Jackie operates a very busy A Circuit barn called Absolute Equestrian Centre. Somehow Jackie always finds the time to order prizes, collect trophies and put together the display set up for the members to receive their awards. This organization of the setup is very important to how efficiently the awards are given out and an essential part of a smooth prize giving ceremony.

Jackie has been able to take some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for this

edition of the InGate.1. How long have you been involved with the OHJA Banquet Awards? You also belong to the Hunter Committee and source prizes for the Pony Power series. I have been involved with the banquet awards for over 20 years. I started when there were other members who organized so I learned from them and took over after they were no longer involved. The Pony Power program was initiated 6 years ago and I have been arranging the prizes every year.

2. Why did you initially decide to get involved and why have you continued with these OHJA initiatives? To begin with I really enjoy sourcing and putting together the prizes. I also feel a strong sense of stewardship for our trophies. They are a very important part of the OHJA’s history. Sometimes I feel like they are “Jackie’s” trophies. I keep track of them and manage upkeep as required and I make sure that they are there at the banquet for the new recipient.

3. Speaking of the banquet, what’s the biggest challenge with putting everything together? The biggest challenge for the trophies is the short deadline to collect the trophies before the banquet.

4. Who are some of the vendors that you work with to arrange for the prizes? For the banquet Dominion Regalia for the ribbons and Melgor for the trophies. For Pony Power many of the items come from Saucy Piaffe and Chrome Equestrian Wear/Letter Perfect Embroidery. I like to support our local small businesses wherever I can.

5. What are some of the most fun prizes you have sourced over the years? For me they were the custom cookies, water bottles, bags and this year the pillows. What I enjoy most is seeing past prizes still being used at the horse shows- some Junior Hunter riders are still carrying bags won in Pony Power classes. The InGate would love photos of riders using/wearing the prizes!

6. Do you have any ideas for any new or different prizes for 2020? There are certainly challenges with having variety with the prizes, along with making them age appropriate for the different divisions. I try whenever possible not to have repetition. I am always open to suggestions!

Behind the Scenes with Mike, Sam and Shannon from Ten Sixty Horse Shows

1. Could you please tell us a little bit about why you decided to start running your horse shows? When we acquired the property which is the home of Ten Sixty Stables in early 2016, part of our business plan was to create a horse show grounds that could work in conjunction with our stable. Our thought was that it would provide us an easily accessible venue to cost effectively develop our own horses as well as provide a new show venue for others to compete and develop their horses and clients. We have been running Trillium horse shows for 5 years at another location so it was something within our wheelhouse that we could add to Ten Sixty Stables.

2. What are some of the things that you’re most proud to offer competitors?Everyone on our team is very focused on customer service. We truly want everyone that Spectators enjoying the show at Ten Sixty.

attends to have a good experience. In 2019, we were proud to offer significant prize money in our feature classes. At both of our shows we offered a10k for the Canadian Hunter Derby as well as 5k(welcome) and 15k(Grand Prix) for open Jumpers. In addition to these feature classes we tried to offer something special for everyone, a Classic or Derby for the hunters and ponies as well as Jumper Classics for all heights on the Sunday. We also believe that providing a venue for development is very important so we keep the rings open in the afternoon upon completion of competition so that trainers can school their clients and young horses.

3. What OHJA programs did you host this year?In 2019, we hosted the OHJA Jumper Medal and the OHJA/CET Mini Medal at both Show-Jump

for Heart and the Ten Sixty Stables Classic. In addition we hosted the OHJA 3’ Jr Am Derby at the Ten Sixty Stables Classic. We are very thankful to the OHJA for supporting these programs.

4. From your perspective, what makes a horse show run successfully in your mind and what did you do to ensure that your shows ran as smoothly as they did?For me, the real key is having people involved at the management level that can problem solve on the fly. There are always little things that come up during an event that need to be addressed quickly, calmly and correctly. We are lucky because Sam, Shannon (Langford) and I have a lot of experience from the perspective of managing and running horse shows. As well, we all have experience from the perspective of being riders and trainers. This helps when looking

at the full picture of how the show will run and wether it will work well for the riders. To ensure the shows ran smoothly we employed the best people that we could; our office staff, in-gates, announcers, crew and officials were all experienced and worked as a team.

5. What should competitors be excited for next year? Is there anything different that you’ll be doing compared to this year? For 2020 we plan to build on what we started this year. We look forward to improving and smoothing out some small issues we experienced in 2019. At this point we see our facility as a place to do a boutique type of horse show, we want to stick to two Gold show dates for next year. We will continue to offer our feature jumper classes at about the 1.30m level. We feel the group of competitors we had this year enjoyed being able to jump that height for significant prize money. These classes put on a great show for our VIP section with enough horses

in the jump off to create some tension. We hope to continue to have a very positive atmosphere at our shows and make it a place people look forward to coming to compete. We hope our horse show guests continue to enjoy the VIP Tent at the Show Jump for Heart Charity show. Basheer and Reem (Khan) do an amazing job planning and organizing that aspect, it takes a great deal of work and it adds a lot of ambiance to the horse show helping to make it a special event.

6. Is there anything else you’d like to add?We would like to thank all the trainers and competitors that attended in 2019, Not everyone is willing to go somewhere new for the first time and those that did seemed to give very positive feedback regarding how we managed the shows. We hope that our gold shows at Ten Sixty Stables will be well supported by the equestrian community and continue to grow in 2020.

Behind the Scenes with Penny McEachern – An Ingate Expert!

1. How many years have you been “ingating” and what would you say is your most memorable experience? I’ve been working ingate for 9 years. One of my fondest memories was when I was working at Tournament of Champions years ago when the new “harness” helmets were required. George Morris was showing and was not aware of the new helmet rule. I had to stop George in the chute and explain to him that he would be eliminated if he did not have the required helmet on! He borrowed one while in the chute! The next day I saw him walking with a new helmet box in hand!

2. What is your horse industry history prior to ingating?I previously owned Fieldstone Farm, a full service hunter/jumper stable - showing and sales. I judged, course designed and did horse sales.

3. Who are your favourite horses and riders? My favorite horse would be Hickstead, and Eric Lamaze and Beezie Madden are my favorite riders.

4. Running an ingate requires a lot of work. What are some of the things you do to prepare for a day of ingating at a horse show?I do all my sheets with class lists ahead of time to

be organized and I bring lots of easy to eat snacks & water. As leaving the booth is not an option!

5. What do you wish people knew about someone who runs an ingate? The job of an ingate employee is a multi-tasking job with communication to competitors, judges, announcers, ring crew, trainers, medics, ribbon presenters, other ingate staff, stewards and office staff just to name a few! We endeavour to run an efficient ring to benefit the smooth running of the horse show. Communication is key.

6. Tell us about your winter and how the industry helped you out.Unfortunately, an accident in early January 2019 left me badly injured and in the hospital for 2 1/2 months following two surgeries. Self employed and unable to work, I was very scared about how I would get through this. The horse community, friends, coworkers, peers and competitors -the amazing “horse” people as we are called - donated to a Go Fund Me that was set up for me. I was overwhelmed to say the least of the tremendous support and caring shown to me. The support and financial help received helped me through this terrible time in my life. I can’t express enough how grateful I am to be a part of such a wonderful and supportive group of people - the horse community!

Catching up with Mackenzie Wray and Dannie Murphy

Members of Canada’s 2019 FEI North American Youth Championships Gold Medal Team

At the August 2019, FEI North American Youth Championships, Canada’s Young Riders team consisting of Dannie Murphy of Charlottetown, PEI, Sam Walker of Nobleton, ON, Samantha Starratt of Calgary, AB, and Mackenzie Wray of Loretto, ON earned the team Gold Medal.

Both Mackenzie and Dannie ride with Erynn Ballard at Looking Back farms and have been long time OHJA members who have participated in a number of OHJA programs over the years. We took some time to catch up with both girls and asked them to share what their experiences at FEINAYC were like.

Mackenzie WrayHaving the opportunity to compete at NAYC and win team Gold at Old Salem was an experience of a life time. One of my long-term goals was

going to young riders, and Jewel (my horse) and I had worked hard to get there. It was very neat to be able to see all the other teams and be able to wear all of the Canadian gear. The first day of the competition is a speed round and I went close to last in the order. After watching multiple riders lay down amazing trips, I definitely let the pressure get to me and was eliminated.

It’s a really defeating feeling to have your first trip go wrong especially when you’re part of a team, but just like any sport, not everyday is a good day, and that’s ok. When the second day came around, I was mentally in a better place. We had two team rounds that day and I was really determined to make them good ones. I have a really good partnership with my horse and knew that we were very capable to jump two good rounds. Our first

round was really good and we only had the last rail down. It was a quiet line and I pushed into the last jump. We jumped the exact same course for our second round and I knew what we needed to do and we finished with a clear round.

By the end of the class, Canada was sitting first by one rail. Sitting through the rest of the class knowing this was probably one of the most nerve-racking things I’ve ever done. In the end we finished Gold which was the best feeling. To be able to be on team with such talented riders, one of them being one of my closest friends, was for sure my favorite thing about the whole experience. Seeing as show jumping is mainly an individual sport, it was exciting to be able to count points, cheer and watch your team mates knowing that win

or lose we did it as a team. Overall, I met some incredible people, experienced highs and lows, and won a team medal. I could not be prouder of myself, Jewel, and our team.

Dannie MurphyCompeting at the 2019 North American Youth Championships was an experience I will never forget. To get to this level of my riding takes a lot, it’s a very time consuming sport and it is not always easy but it’s times like this that make it all worth it.

The horses that I have had in the past taught me to always keep going no matter what the circumstance is. If the perfect distance does not appear in front of the jump you have to figure out a way to make it work. I think at NAYC that really helped me.

My horse Isabeau De Laubry performed great the first day which gave me a boost of confidence for the rest of the competition. However, I knew going into the first round that I would have to try my best to go fast in order to get a good placing as it was a speed. Speed classes are always something I have struggled with, I prefer to go wide and a bit slower. I really felt like my horse gave it her all which allowed me to ride out of my comfort zone. My partnership with her is still relatively new but she was there for me every second of every round. In the few months I have had her she has taught me a lot and I believe it all came together at NAYC.

Being a part of the team was an incredible feeling.Everyone was so kind and encouraging, I had the pleasure of having very talented, kind teammates; Sam, Samantha & Mackenzie. I was lucky enough that one of my best friends, Mackenzie, was on the team which made things even more exciting as we have both moved up in the sport together and ride at the same barn. The experience of competing at a venue like Old Salem and riding for Canada taught me so many amazing things that I am forever grateful for!
