• Prisons are state run institutions• Jails are county run institutions • Jail inmates usually awaiting sentencing, or have

sentences less than 365 days• Prison Inmates have already been sentenced, and

have sentences longer than 364 days

• Prisons: Long term secure confinement facilities• Inmates are already convicted and serving time as

punishment• Jails: Short term confinement facilities• Inmates are being held following arrest, pending trial• Inmates with short sentences, or convicted of minor crimes

• Jails are local and relatively close to inmate families• Prisons could be very far from the inmate families• There are only approximately 100 federal prisons,

correctional facilities, and detention centers in the United States, the rest of the prisons and county jails are run by the individual states.

• A lot of prisons and jails are treacherous places to live or work• There is a great deal of overcrowding in both prisons and jails• New prisons and jails are very costly to construct• There are many prisons and jails that need to be updated• The importance of safety measures leaves only modest room for

successful treatment programs
