Answeranyone Questiononly. The 9yestioncarries50 marksQuestion 1: A reinforced cement concrete building was proposed to be constructed on a marshyarea. The site being inaccessible machineries cannot be deployed. The designer initially proposed tohave isolated footings as the foundation assuming the soil bearing capacity of 150KN/m2, howeveron physical observation and test at the site, the soil bearing capacity was found to be much less thanthe assumedvalue. Therefore, the contractor proposed to relocate the building to a more stable place; however thisproposal was turned down and the contractor was asked to make all the necessary changes requiredand to construct the building on the proposed area only.

    a) You as the soil engineer, how you would carry out the investigation and recommend theremedial measures, describe briefly.(15 marks)

8 b) You as the designer, what changes would you make. Describe briefly and if necessary givesome sketches o substantiate your justifications.
