Everyone, it seems, loves Kylie. After an enforcedbreak through ill-health she talks health and love andtakes us through the recording process of new album‘Aphrodite’ with Executive Producer Stuart Price.

As household names go they don’t get much biggerthan Kylie Minogue. She’s been part of the culturalfurniture since the 80s. It’s quite a cv. There’s CharleneKylie from her days in ‘Neighbours’. Teenthrob Kyliewhen she hooked up with co-star Jason Donovan.Poptastic Kylie – essentially all her hits with Stock,Aitken and Waterman. Goth Kylie from her duet withfellow Australian Nick Cave. There was even an IndieKylie with her experimental ‘Deconstruction’ albumthat featured songs penned by members of the ManicStreet Preachers. And, of course, there’s Electro Kylieon ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ and a memorablepair of gold lamé hot pants. Gigantic arena-sized toursfollowed. Our desire to see Ms K in concert wasseemingly insatiable. Then illness hit. But now she’s back with a new album and perhapsnext year some opportunities to enjoy the Kylie concertexperience.

K: Kylie MinogueSP: Stuart Price

Q: Congratulations Kylie, this is studio albumnumber 11. How does that make you feel?K: It is kind of unbelievable. I thought the tenth album,‘X’, was a benchmark but this one has just beenamazing. I wouldn’t care what number you called it.It’s been the most amazing experience.

Q: What was the recording process like for you thistime?K: Well for me this was a first in that I had anExecutive Producer. It was just the best experience, and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesive albumI’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in thePWL days, which by its very nature made it cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working with different

producers and trying different stuff that has workedreally well for me in the past, but I definitely wantedsomeone to tie this together as Stuart (Price) has doneso beautifully.

Q: What was it about this album and this project thatmade you want to do it differently to before?K: The idea {to do it differently} was at the forefront ofmy mind on this album because I’d had a little nigglewith the previous two albums. But the added reasonthat all of this came around was because of our{Executive Producer Stuart Price} dear friend JakeShears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working inthis very studio, as I had started recording my album invarious studios around the world. He praised Stuarthighly and loves me dearly, and basically pestered meand said “You’ve got to do this, it’ll be so amazing!”. SoI’ve got much to thank Jake for.

Q: This is a much lighter album than some before. Isthat some sort of reaction to the darker times thatyou had been through?K: I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. I guess Iwas just feeling like expressing joy at this point, I’dwritten songs more about that period in my life eitheron or for the last album, so I didn’t feel like goingthrough those again; this was about this moment, thistime, and what a happy experience this has been forme.

Q: After speaking about a theme, what’s yourrelationship with love at the moment?K: Jeez! (Pauses) That’s a massive question! A lot ofpeople question why so many pop songs are aboutlove, why operas are so written, why paintings arepainted, why we cry during really silly commercials.Love in all its various forms challenges us all the timeand I guess you could say this was a little love affairwith this album. I loved coming to work and I loved

working with Stuart. I think that feeling comes throughon the album.SP: Love is always a great muse for writing songs, butbetter a muse for being up and down and not plainsailing and I think that gives you ideas, or you havethings that you learn over your life that start comingback out in lyrics. I think also you realise that if you’vefelt something then someone else has probably felt ittoo, and they may have felt it in a different way butthere’s a connection there. So it’s a great way ofexorcising demons but it’s also a really great way ofcelebrating stuff as well; more than anything all of thesongs on this record in their various guises of love areabout a celebration.

Q: What were the best moments when recording?SP: Well, what you probably can’t see is that by Kylie’sfeet and mine there’s a little six-foot square area thatwas designated the ‘dance zone’.K: You guys are right in it! You feel some kind ofmovement?SP: That was when you knew a song was right, andyou knew that it was saying what we wanted to sayK: We’d both be listening in our own world and there’dbe the point in the song when the hands would go up!Hands up meant good reaction. And, of course, therewas the ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’ which I’ve got totell you has travelled. I’ve been asked so much aboutthat. Shall we tell that little story?SP: You should yeah. That came from New York aswell.K: It did! The soon to be trademarked and copyrighted‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’ is a way of testing a song’sviability as a song without production. He’d (Stuart)get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing.SP: Well it wasn’t quite singing it was more of aperformance.K: True. SP: Kylie does the best Dolly Parton impersonationthere is on the planet ever! We figured out that if thatworked for any song, and we could see Dolly doing itthen on top of that we could sit down with a guitar anddo it like that as well – the song was probably destinedfor good things. It became, as you say, a sort of litmustest for each song on the record. And destined Kylie todo it at every dinner party she goes to from this pointonwards to the end of time.K: Then as a celebration when it was my last day towrap up a couple of things, I took it upon myself to gettwo of the cheapest, gnarliest, got-nothing-to-do-with-a-natural-fibre-at-all outfits – cowboy andcowgirl. One was couriered with a message – I can’tremember what I wrote – but just reading it you couldtell it was in ‘that accent y’all!’ (adopts Southern belleaccent).SP: It mentioned grits in it somewhere as well.K: It did mention grits. I did a quick change at theentrance and walked in to find my ‘cowboy’ with KennyRogers blasting out of the stereo. Then I came in andpunched out a good old rendition of ‘Yeeeeeha!’ on ‘AllThe Lowers’ (recent single) in ‘Dolly Parton LitmusTest’-style. SP: We got the baked beans on the fire for that one! K: That was one of our most fun moments.

Q: Is this one of the most fun albums you’ve evermade then?K: Yep. Without a doubt!

‘Aphrodite’ is out now.
