Avoid a tragedy: Tryand live for yourselfDo not live for others, live for yourself.

What is it to live an authentic life?Most readers, will, perhaps, accuse me

of using big words. I am not. It means agenuine life. Still, if that does not workour for you, try sincere life.

If you still can’t figure it out, I don’tknow what will. Maybe a life that youwere meant to live.

If you do not have an idea now, youwill do so with time.

You will do so when you like to dowhat you like to do. Not what willimpress others. You don’t live your lifefor others. You live it for yourself. Butmost people live for others.

I know why it is that. It starts fromhome, when you live for your parents.Parents beware; don’t make your childrenlive for you. You will make them dom(stupid). They won’t know what theywant in life.

They will look up to you, even whenyou are not there. And it will be atragedy. I know of a case that is atragedy. A last born was told he is a lastborn.

You know what that means. Yoursiblings will look after you. And the lastborn in his adulthood is still a last born.He still can’t look after himself.

He is still that last born in his forma-tive years.

This is a tragedy. I don’t know whetheryou have experienced that, or not.

Some guys expect their siblings to dothings for them even when they are old.They can’t do things for themselves,thanks to their parents.

Their parents spoilt them. Theypumped wrong information into theirheads. Hey, what you pump into some-one’s head is important. You can’t tellthem others will look after them. Theyshould not look after themselves.

That is why most people are notmaking it in life. They are not livingauthentic lives. They are living lives thatthey have been told to live. What lifehave you been told to live? Are youhappy with it?

If you are not why don’t you leave it?Don’t tell me it is too late.

It is never too late. It is too late whenyou tell yourself it is. But as long as youdon’t, you can start afresh. You canfollow your bliss.

What is your bliss, do you know? It isdifficult to know when you are focusedon things of the world. When you want tobe a leader when you are not meant to beone, because you want to be rich.

We all have to know why we are here.As long as you don’t know that, I canguarantee you, you won’t be happy.

Neither will wealth make you happy. Ithas to do with being true to yourself.

An open letter to allKhayelitshansThis year, the Khayelitsha Develop-ment Forum (KDF) is turning twenty.

Should it not give me a great senseof embarrassment that exactly whenthe story of great sacrifices is to betold, my ignorance drives me toembark on a drunken campaign thatleads me to be part of a campaign forthe destruction of Khayelitsha’s O.RTambo sports complex.

It was never built by the City ofCape Town. This monument came as aresult of a disciplined struggle by thepeople through the KDF.

It was then touted to be one of thehost venues for the 2004 OlympicGames bid that was eventually orga-nized in Athens, Greece.

The story of O.R Tambo SportsComplex is a story of the people of theworld. Now your foolish acts has evendeprived you an opportunity to tellyour great- grandchildren a goodstory.

In 2002 the Khayelitsha DevelopmentSummit declared: “Ngezakhono ZethuSinako Ukuphucula Ubomi BethuNezizukulwana Ezizayo” (With ourOwn Skills We can Improve ourOwn lives and that the Generationsto Come).

The people who burned down thehall were part of that struggle, whichled to the construction of an Olympicsvenue.

O.R Tambo Sports Complex wasthere for you; covered you under herwings when fires guttered your homesin December 2012. She became youronly home for four months, yet, youryearning for foolishness overwhelmedyou to the extent that you did noteven remember that is was still underher wing that the mayor of Cape TownPatricia De Lille told the great lie!

It is your foolish deed that seeks towipe from our minds the memory thatthe shacks that today surround thisgreat place pride were, according tothis same mayor, to stay there for nolonger than Ninety (90) days.

Dear residents of Khayelitsha, thecriteria for any just struggle is that itshould only be sanctioned by alegitimate authority and that there bea demonstrable prospect for wining it!

Would you accept that your foolishdeed has now cast a cloud on agenuine and legitimate people’sstruggle for relocation to a serviceablesite? Would you accept that yourburning of this monument has trans-formed a legitimate struggle to that ofenemy of progress; an enemy of thevery people you use to cover yourcriminal intent! Your act has grantedDe Lille, our real enemy, a smokescreen to further renege on herconstitutional obligation to develop thepeople of BM Section. The mayor ofCape Town has demonstrated her hate

for the people of Khayelitsha, especial-ly the people of BM Section, bymaking it her personal project toremove its development from the listof priority projects by establishing herown Mayoral Urban RegenerationProgramme.

Your foolish deeds, has set thepeople of BM Section Ten stepsbackward through your uncontrollabledesire to loot and steal.

Steal from a monument! You are acursed!

Let me share with you, though, thatthe people of Khayelitsha have onceagain recommitted themselves that:“With our Own Skills We WillRebuild the OR Tambo Sports Com-plex”.

On March 21, they will converge atthe hall and celebrate human rightsday.

Your likes are welcome at thisaugust gathering as there will be afestival of ideas for you too, to benefitfrom. Social entrepreneurs are notcontent just to give a fish or teachhow to fish. They will not rest untilthey have revolutionized the fishingindustry itself. Your ignorance hasalso visited our young minds inschools.

This kind of foolishness communi-cates secret messages to most youngpeople today that the society will runitself quite nicely until theytake overthe reigns. Yet the fact is that thesociety is not running itself nicely...because the rest of us need all theenergy, brains, imagination and talentthat young people can bring to beardown on our difficulties.

For society to attempt to solve itsdesperate problems without the fullparticipation of young people isimbecilic. Things are never as compli-cated as they seem.

It is only our arrogance thatprompts us to find unnecessarilycomplications to our problems.

Gays and lesbians angeredFor 25-year-old, Aphiwe Mikana from Gu-gulethu, raising awareness about what itmeans to be lesbian is more than brightlycoloured floats or a day of dancing throughcity streets. “I don’t always feel safe walkingin the street. The guys who sit on the cornershave told me they are going to rape me orthey grab me while I’m walking. I can’t walkhand-in-hand with a girlfriend in the town-ship,” a teary-eyed Mikana said. Mikana andabout 50 other people danced to drum beats,chanted and held up posters at a busy inter-section in Green Point on Saturday, just be-fore the main Pride march took place near-by. The protest action was organised by agroup of gay and lesbian activists who haveaccused Cape Town Pride of being “racist”and exclusionary.

The on-going disputes around the CapeTown Pride festival led the group to launchan “Alternative Inclusive Pride” last week.They hosted several events which were heldat the same time as those organised by thetwelfth annual Cape Town Pride festival thisyear.

Three of the group’s events, which includ-ed seminars, parties, a movie night andtalks, were held in Khayelitsha and Gugulet-

hu.However, in a statement released ahead of

the protest on Saturday, the group said theywould not be boycotting the Pride march,but instead called for a community-drivenmovement to be involved in the planning offuture gay festivals. “Kwanele! Enough withthe privileged, white, gay, male images pre-sented to us by Cape Town Pride in its cur-rent form. Kwanele with single-struggle pol-itics and lack of intersectional understand-ing of oppressions,” it read.During theprotest, Makana who also works for the lob-by group Free Gender, said the festival wasnot a true reflection of the gay communityin poor areas. “I came out in high school. Tothis day my parents still think I’m goingthrough a phase and I’ll get over it one day.That is not going to happen. We rather wantthem to have events that recognise that hatecrimes are still happening in the townships.“I cant say that people from Constantia don’thave issues as well, but we need to talk aboutit in order to put an end to hate crimes,” shesaid. Free Gender chairperson Funeka Sold-aat, said the protest ahead of the Pridemarch was a step towards unifying the gayand lesbian community in the province.

Drink and drive life drama to be airedSPINDOG MOTSAMAI

A radio drama series that recently hit theairwaves is causing a stir, driving over athousand people to declare that they will notdrink and drive in future.

The Aziwe Ke radio drama was launchedby leading local alcohol beverage company,Brandhouse in its aim to raise awarenessof the perils of drinking and driving.Aziwe Ke aims to tap into consumers’ am-

bitions by highlighting how a promising fu-ture can be stripped and dreams crushed inan instant, just by choosing to drink anddrive.

Within two weeks of being on air, the dra-ma, which airs on Umhlobo Wenene, has en-couraged people to visit the campaign web-site, where they can pledge to either drink

and not drive; or drive and not drink.The drama follows the lives of university

friends Tumelo, Chippa and Richard whoregularly go out drinking over weekendsand drive home while under the influenceof alcohol.

When caught by police, they bribe theirway out. The highlife goes on until onenight, they knock down an elderly commu-nity member.

They try to hide their involvement in theincident, but the truth becomes too hard toconceal.

“It might as well be that people are ableto avoid arrest and prosecution throughbribes and corruption.

But your behaviour will one day impacton your community and family, there willbe no paying your way out of trouble.

Tumelo, Chippa and Richard realise thisthe hard way after killing an old man intheir community while driving drunk.

Although Drive Dry speaks to all SouthAfricans who have access to a car and whodrink alcohol socially, it targets mainly 18to 25 year olds who tend to be more blaséabout drinking and driving.

The five-minute radio drama will be airedonce a week for 13 weeks

TheGugulethu businessman has splurgedmore thanR250,000 towards helping nine de-serving students from disadvantaged fami-lies with their eduactional needs.

The moment saw tears of joy runningdown the cheeks of those present at thehandover ceremony held at the Luyolo Com-munity Centre in Gugulethu on Saturday.Debbie Schafer, Western Cape MEC for

Education and other distinguished from thecommunity, showered Nogaga with praisefor such benevolence.Nogaga is the owner of two petrol stations

in Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.Schafer said it heartening to see that peo-

ple like Nogaga contributed to the uplift-ment in their communities.“This is by no means a small contribution

and we must thank and acknowledge peoplewho do wonderful things like give childrenan opportunity to study,” said Schafer.She urged the students to grab the oppor-

tunity and make it count.Councillor Mzwakhe Qavashe said while

there was “generally a loss of hope in thestreets” people like Nogaga set up good ex-maple of nation building.“When I heard about his bursary scheme

I threw my weight behind it because I be-lieve in education. Nogaga is an examplethat Gugulethu business people must fol-low,” he said.Professor John Cartwright described No-

Former prosecuter and nowmotivationalspeaker Nomonde Scott told the studentsabout her “fall from grace and how shebounced back.”Scottmade history by being the first black

female prosecutor, who was later convictedas a drugmule. She served Seven of a 12 yearsentence for her indiscretions.Scott has written a book called Look Be-

fore youLeapabouther pastexperiences, andtrials and tribulations..On Saturday, she urged the learners to fo-

cus on their future life.“If you mix with amagintsa you are invit-

ing misery and doom,” she said.This is the fifth year running that Nogaga

has paid tuition fees for deserving studentsfrom his own pocket.At the end of January, Nogaga hosted a

benefit concert to help raise funds for hisbursary scheme and has vowed to continuehelping deserving learners.Past recipient Sindiswa Sawambi who is

pursuinganLLBdegree thanked Nogaga forhis selfless love.

“I come from a household where educa-tion is not a priority, but I am a student to-day because of Mr Nogaga,” she said.

One of the current recipients who will bestudying to wards a commerce degree atUCT, Oventle Ntlangu (16) wasoverhwhelmed by emotions as tears rolled

down her cheeks.“I’msohappy... know Iwillmake it. Iwant

to make everyone proud. I want to make thebest out of it,” she said.

Swedes add to the cultural mixMBONGISENI MASEKO

It was a beautiful day when schools fromKhayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain, includingone from Sweden collaborated for a culturalevent on Tuesday.The cultural exchange event, which was

attended by learners and teachers from JoeSlovo Secondary School, Injongo PrimarySchool and Lulea Gymnasieby Larkan fromSweden, was held at Cedar High School, inMitchell’ Plain.This was one of a series of events the

schools have organised since they formedtheir partnership in 2004.Their relationship has since seen five

learners from all three local schools flyingout to Sweden to spend dayswith their peersabroad several times and vice versa.The theme for this event was CulturalMu-

sic.MandlaKala, teacher from InjongoPrima-

ry School, said the partnership has seenmuch growth over the years and that it isbenefiting learners as they learn about eachother’s cultures.“I am very happy for the partnership, be-

cause learners interact and learn about eachother’s cultures.

We want to thank the Swedish partnersfor what they doing for us. They funded allour tours to Sweden. They also take ourlearners to stay with them in their houseswhenwevisit there. It is a great project,”Ka-la said.Monica Aslund, music teacher from Swe-

den, said there were 14 trips made by theschools between the two countries eversince the project started.“We have been singing a lot of South Afri-

can songs, especially songs that promotedfreedom. We were always behind the idea ofdemocracy in this country.(Nelson)Mandela visited Sweden soon aft-

catchy. It makes youwant you to dance. Itwas a life changing mo-ment for me.I would definitely like

learner from Sweden,said she was over-whelmed to see thelearners singing.“It was breathtaking and amazing. Chil-

dren are so talented here and it seems theydo not even know that.

the youth developments within thecommunities. However, he carried hiswork to the young people in thecountry and was truly loved national-ly.It was a great sadness to hear a

week ago that our hero passed on, butbecause of the good work he has done,we are left to reminisce about his goodwork.He established his own music

groups, Jabulani, Amankentshane andFour by Four Cultural group.

After his passing, we expected thatthe SABC would transmit a livebroadcast to the nation.It even saddens us people who loved

the legend to hear the president rejecta request for a state funeral.The question we need to ask our-

selves and the SABC is how was SabaMbixane different from the other iconsthat have passed on?Even his memorial service was not

broadcast.Where have we gone wrong. The

SABC needs to give us answers.Mbixane deserved more honour than

just a radion broadcast.If our state and SABC will not be

able to treat all our icons the same,they should rather not broadcast anyfuneral at all.We talk of democracy, but it seems

discover that Five people were shot andkilled just outside of one of the threemost notorious shebeens in Mau Mau.Tragic as this incident is, for those of

us who live here, we knew that it wasjust a matter of time before it became areality.This incident was not the first of its

kind. Most disappointing and frustratingis that police knew about this illegalshebeen, which operates 24 hours and didabsolutely nothing about it.Why are Nyanga police not proactive

regarding crime fighting.

Why must they always wait until livesare lost before they act decisively.In the street where the murders took

Ballet on offer in RosebankThe Cape Town City Ballet’s (CTCB) popularannual open day will be celebrating its 21stbirthday on Saturday 14 March at the UCTSchool of Dance in Rosebank.

Starting at 10:00 the day provides enter-tainment for the entire family and offers arare “behind the scenes” glimpse into thedaily life of a professional dancer.

This year’s event, organised by CTCB’sKeith Mackintosh for the 21st time, promi-ses to be a bumper edition, showcasing thework of the CTCB, the UCT School of Dance,the Cape Junior Ballet (CJB) and ZAMADance School.

Visitors can begin their day by watchingthe professionals in Company Class taughtby Tracy Li, or visit CJB dancers in a pre-professional classical ballet class which in-cludes repertoire and coaching, conductedby Daniela Di Lorenzo. The latter is suitablefor all budding ballerinas to observe.

Company rehearsal will see Prof Eliza-beth Triegaardt taking CTCB dancersthrough their paces for the forthcoming pro-duction of Carmen.

Young visitors can participate in severalactivities, including face painting, stagemake-up or experiencing a tactile moment

with costumes and headdresses fromCTCB’s wardrobe department. An Introduc-tion to Ballet class, open to all aged 9 to 90,will be conducted by Robin van Wyk. Pa-trons can partake, dressed as they are, in thefun of a beginners’ ballet class.

The big highlight of the day will be the 21stFundraising Performances presented byKeith Mackintosh, when dancers fromCTCB, CJB and ZAMA perform a variety ofspectacular short ballets and pas de deux.

Visitors are invited to come along andmeet their favourite dancers, and maybeeven have a photo taken with them.

Refreshments will be available for pur-chase throughout the day along with dancetogs, ballet DVDs and CDs.V Entrance cost R40 for adults andR20 for children under 13, payableat the venue on the day. This priceincludes all the activities on the dayexcept the fundraisingperformancesat 12:30 or 13:30. Tickets for theseshows will be available from theFriends of the Ballet table at R50. Allproceeds from the open day are inaid of Cape Town City Ballet’s outre-ach programme.

Zama Batyi, a Xhosa praise poet and actorclaims that followinga “calling” fromhis an-cestors to be what he is today, was not mis-placed.Batyi, 41, from Crossroads also has a col-

ourful scope when it comes to art.He says, though that becoming a praise po-

et was by default.“I discovered my talent soon after I came

back from initiation school, in 1996.I had this urge to shower my mother, No-

phumzile Batyi, with praises for all she haddone for me.This also includedmybrother, Thula,who

inspired me,”.Batyi said the two inspired him a great

deal and were always there to put him inline whenever he strayed as a child.“Growing up, I started to pen some poems.

I realised this was my calling. My ancestorsalways speak to me when I am asleep,”.Batyi thenmet with Daluxolo Hoho, a per-

formance artist to whom he looked up to.He soonmade a collection of all his poems,

which he compiled into a book titled: “Int-ambane,”.The initial planwas to have the book form-

ing a syllabus in schools in the province, butthat did not happen.Batyi has since published another book

with titled Inqaka Yesihobe, in 2011.The book was followed by his latest offer-

ing titled Ingqabe, which was published lastyear.“I was given the name Ingqabe by my an-

cestors through my sleep. I did not evenknow its meaning for a long time. I then didmy research where I learnt that it meantSparrow, a family of small passerine birds.People love my poems,” he said.He writes his poems about love, political

leaders, death and many other things.He also wrote a praise poem about the late

Saba Mbixane, the radio presenter forUmhlobo Wenene FM, whose death shockedmany lovers of Mbaqanga music, recently.The poem titled Ngxatsho ke Zawa.

“He (Mbixane) inspired many people. Iwrote the poem to thank him for his goodwork. I only spoke to him telephonically andI listened to him since he first hit the air-waves years ago,” he said.Batyi wishes to get invites to gigs to per-

form his catchy poems.He has since acted inmany television pro-

grammes such as Generations , acted therole of Professor Bhengu, Scandal, pastorGola, RhythmCity, detectiveMqokeli, Intsi-ka, Zodwa, Amaza, 90 Plain Street andmanymore.Anyone who wishes to invite him to per-

group of gay and lesbian activists who haveaccused Cape Town Pride of being “racist”and exclusionary.The on-going disputes around the Cape

Town Pride festival led the group to launchan “Alternative Inclusive Pride” last week.They hosted several events which were heldat the same time as those organised by thetwelfth annual CapeTownPride festival thisyear.Three of the group’s events, which includ-

ed seminars, parties, a movie night andtalks, were held inKhayelitsha andGugulet-hu. However, in a statement released aheadof the protest on Saturday, the group saidthey would not be boycotting the Pridemarch, but instead called for a community-drivenmovement to be involved in the plan-ning of future gay festivals.

“Kwanele! Enough with the privileged,white, gay, male images presented to us byCapeTownPride in its current form.Kwane-lewith single-struggle politics and lack of in-tersectional understanding of oppressions,”it read. Alternative Inclusive Pride protest-ers. One of the placards reads, “Your white

works for the lobby group Free Gender, saidthe festival was not a true reflection of thegay community in poor areas.“I came out in high school. To this day my

parents still think I’m going through a phaseand I’ll get over it one day. That is not goingto happen.We rather want them to have events that

recognise that hate crimes are still happen-ing in the townships. “I cant say that peoplefrom Constantia don’t have issues as well,but we need to talk about it in order to putan end to hate crimes,” she said. Free Gen-der chairperson Funeka Soldaat, said theprotest ahead of the Pride march was a steptowards unifying the gay and lesbian com-munity in the province. “Protesting at theevent was the last resort for us, we’ve beenengagingwith the organisers for awhile, butthey chose not to listen,” she said. Soldaatwho is also a member of the Alternative In-clusive Pride group, said they received anoverwhelming response to their events.“The response over the past week has beenamazing.Homophobia has always been a bigissueandcultureplays abigpart in that. ‘Big Daddy’ pays academy visitMANDLA MAHASHE

It was a big day for aspiring pugilists fromLanga when the Big Daddy of boxing paida visit to their academy.Nika Kumalo Boxing Academy played

host toRiddick “BigDaddy”Bowewho cameto assess the kind of facilities that youngboxers from the townships are afforded.Bowe, a former two-time world heavy-

weight champion, visited the academyat theLove Life Centre.B owe said he was happy to see that some

youths were still attracted to boxing.“It’s not only in SouthAfrica but in the US

as well that young people are less interestedin sports nowadays.We need to show them that in sports there

areways for them to not only do great thingsbut most importantly get away from pover-ty,” he shared.Poverty is one thing that Bowe would

know very well as he was born and raisedin Brooklyn, one of the roughest neighbour-hoods in New York.Bowe went to the same high school with

another champion Mike Tyson and the tworemain friends.He has spent the past threeweeks in South

Africa. He said that he was impressed withthe set up but he said that there was a lot

of room to improve on the training.“A boxer’s lungs need air so these guys

need to do a lot of running so that they don’ttire easily.If you neglect running it would be hard for

you to be nippy in the ring and if you cantavoid punches in the ring then you are out,”he said.Academy founder and former national fly-

weight champion Nika Kumalo said that itwas an honour to have Bowe at their acade-my.“He is one of the sportspeople that man-

aged to come out of a difficult environmentand make a success out of their talents.These young boxers need to know of such

stories and know that it is possible for themas well,” said Kumalo.Kumalo said that he hopes that the visit

will inspire the youngsters with the knowl-edge that they can also visit other countriesbecause of boxing.“When I was younger i also did not think

that I could visit countries such asAustraliaand the US but through sport I did.We want them to look beyond the streets

of Langa and be motivated by the possibili-ties,” he added.Kumalo started the academy in 2014 and

offers after school programmes for youngpupils from the area.
