Site Context

• The 18.5 acre site is the location of the former Northwestern Barrel Superfund Site

• Site was deeded to the City of South Milwaukee in 2011 and final clean-up of site completed in 2012

• Opportunities to connect to other featureso South Milwaukee Arboretum (2

blocks west)o South Milwaukee Yacht Club (1/3

mile north along shoreline)o Grant Park (1/2 mile north along

shoreline)

• Settlement agreement requires that the City must provide public access

Site Features

• Gradual slope up from shoreline is unique in this area which is dominated by significant steep bluffs

• Coastal wetland at confluence of ravine and lake

• Severe ravine erosion results in large sediment contribution to Lake Michigan, negative impacts to the coastal wetland and a public safety hazard

• Currently, there is no defined public access

Summary of Project Objectives

Create a document that will guide subsequent design and construction

• Reduce impacts of non-point pollution• Develop approach to stabilize ravine• Provide public access to passive area and shoreline• Protect and preserve the City’s natural heritage and environmental corridors• Increase opportunities for public interaction with Lake Michigan
