What was once just a dream has now become a reality: today, the City of Joy is home to seven different organizations and two community programs. Together, they provide better opportunities of life for more than 25,000 needy people.

Our project continuest grown, not only through the number and size of the buildings, but also, and perhaps even more importantly, through the increasing range of group synergies and professional support which the Foundation facilitates, included this combination of services that makes the City of Joy model a unique and innovative contribution in the fi eld of social development.

In 2007, six years after we began work, and although the sun is still shining on the City of Joy, the Board of Governors initiated a strategic review and evaluated the achievements to date, a process which resulted in a new mission and vision for the Foundation which will light the path of our future growth.

On behalf of all of the Board, I wish to express our sincere thanks to all our supporters, volunteers and donors. I hope you share with us the great joy and deep sense of satisfaction that comes with being associated with this project and I invite you to continue working with us, contributing your energy and commitment so, that day after day we can continue to build a better Quintana Roo for everyone.

The City of Joy is a practical example of how the whole can be more than the sum of its parts. “Synergies” are those programs, spaces or activities which are based on team work and so allow us to optimize the service models and ensure the best possible use of available resources.

Community Medical Service 3,286 consultation for 2,114 beneficiaries Ongoing support and advice for Homes Coordination of the “Integral wellbeing” project in the Home for the Elderly, financed by INDESOL Increase in the number of health professionals or companies who lend support

Community Legal Service 163 people received legal support Coordination of the Legal support and education project financed by INMUJERES 56 prisoners (first time offenders who are family breadwinners) were freed from prisons in Cancun and Playa de Carmen

In addition, the shared spaces (Multipurpose Center, Training Center and sports area) were used by a number of organizations for diverse education and training purposes, as well as for cultural and recreational events.

As well as accompanying the organizations in the City of Joy in a process of capacity building, the Foundation has a key role to play as a community leader, generating up-to-date information about social needs. We also strive to catalyze development efforts by being an intermediary and making it easy for individuals, families, businesses and organizations to achieve their philanthropic goals.

Additional support for Homes

Community Leadership

In spite of the level of general concern about the social challenges facing Cancun, little statistical information is available on the subject.

The “Study on At Risk Children in Cancun” was a local, joint initiative, carried out by Marketing Consultants, REDES Turismo and the City of Joy Foundation in order to contribute reliable information about the situation and needs of children at risk in our community.

The study has been shared with numerous social actors and will directly infl uence the design of the Foundation’s future projects.

VolunteersDuring 2007, we provided orientation to over 50 volunteers who went on to participate in the Homes in a wide range of activities, including, but not limited, to direct beneficiary care, education and training, kitchen help, office support and much more. In addition, we coordinated several large groups of volunteers whose work benefitted all the Homes.

BusinessesThe personalized service that we offer our donors means we are able to help businesses achieve their social responsibility goals in many ways, be it through monetary donations or sponsorships, in-kind donations or volunteer work. For example, in our health network alone there are now over fourteen businesses and professionals who regularly donate their services.

StudentsOur work with students, coordinated by their respective schools and universities, has continued to grow in 2007. We worked with 10 student interns and 37 student nurses carried out their work placement for two months at the end of the year. We also hosted class visits from over 10 different schools, the aim of which is to raise the pupils’ awareness about the different types of problems that other people face and how they can be addressed.

We wish to thank all those associations, groups and volunteers who contributed to the City of Joy during 2007, including:

In order to ensure that the Foundation remains worthy of the respect and confidence of its donors and the general public, we offer clear information about our results in accordance with our transparency policy.

During 2007 we spent just over US$1,359,074 on construction, maintenance, general services and support for the Homes, benefitting six organizations who in turn helped over 25,000 needy people.

This was possible thanks to the funds donated by hundreds of different donors. In addition, thanks to our operational structure and commitment of our staff, we kept our administration costs well below the permitted 5%.

In the following section, we have published the Audited Financial Results in relation to the fiscal year 2006. The 2007 results will be made public shortly.
