More electric trains from May!On 5 March, passengers made the first journeys on electric trains betweenLiverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport, following the completion ofwork by Network Rail.
The completely revitalised Northern trains havehad extensive work done with striking new lookexterior paintwork, as well as refreshed andmodernised interiors which include new paintworkand improved seating for a more comfortablejourney.
Newly-installed, on-board information technologymeans customers will be better informed abouttheir journey, with new digital screens andautomated announcements.
These trains are the first of a fleet of 20 trainswhich will be rolled out in the coming months. Theelectrification of the line means that passengers are able to travel on electric trains that arequieter, more reliable and have more space.
Network Rail recently completed the electrification of the lines between Newton-le-Willowsand Liverpool Lime Street and between Wigan and Huyton which link to the previouslyelectrified section between Manchester and Newton-le-Willows.
Stopping services between Liverpool and Manchester Victoria and between Liverpool andWigan will be the next to benefit from electric trains during the summer months.
This is the latest milestone in a major programme of work which will see around 200 railtrack miles electrified in the north west of England as part of a £1 billion plus investment inthe railway to provide passengers with a faster, more regular and reliable service.
