Dear Readers,As I was considering what I was going to share with you this month I read the following article by Rubel Shelley and felt it was worth sharing.

‘The headline stories of the past month have been child abuse, col-lege athletics, and murder in a theater complex. During the same period but relegated to the bottom of the front page have been the Syrian civil war, the American presidential race, and the ongoing global financial crisis.

Now the lead stories are from London. The Queen of England does a cameo role with cinema’s James Bond, and Paul McCartney sings rock’s quintessential nah, nah, nah, nahs of “Hey Jude.” Some 10,500 athletes are competing in the official events. Favorites fail; unknowns triumph. Heart-warming stories emerge — like that of a legally blind South Korean archer winning the gold medal and set-ting a world record in the process, or an American cancer survivor. So which is it? Murder or games? Syrian shelling or spectacular fireworks? Royalty and superstars or executioners and monsters? Should you and I fall on our faces in tears or stand up to cheer? Do the contrasts confuse you? This is life! Reality follows no script. There is — and always will be — a random mix of good and evil, fine fortune and unwarranted grief. We could wish for happy end-ings to every story, but life just doesn’t work that way. Maybe the worst thing of all is that some people think that there is a script and that people are either getting what they deserve or living out the will of God.

The truth of the matter is very, very different. Most of what happens in this world is not the will of God, but our goal must be to react to everything in a way that honours his will for humanity. People aren’t always getting what they deserve, or we can’t make sense of Joseph in an Egyptian prison or Jesus on a Roman cross. History is replete with pious martyrs in graves and evil tyrants on thrones. [cont. pg 3]

Dear Readers cont...It must be this way. Life now is a probationary and testing time; heaven comes at the end and as the reward for faith. If everything worked right for those who are Christians, we’d all be Christians just to avoid the hassle and stress. If suffering were always and only one’s just desserts, why should we feel sympathy or show kindness rather than kicking her while she’s already down?

If you’re into the Olympic Games or long walks or family dinners, enjoy. Be grateful, and share the delight. If you are walking through a dark valley of illness or bankruptcy or loneliness, mourn. Be hum-ble, and ask God for strength.

Life is a mysterious mix that refuses to yield to bumper-sticker solu-tions. Your situation today neither tells God’s opinion of you nor re-veals your worth as a man or woman in his image. It is simply what it is. How you choose to deal with it translates your faith into deeds and defines your relationship with God.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him (James 1:12 NIV).

LettersGreetings from Brigadier Tina Carby, former Corps Officer at Southsea (otherwise known as Russell Rook’s Grandma!)

Dear John, thank you so much for regularly sending to me the “Citadel

Scene”. I get many blessings as I read it and I always look forward to the next issue.

It is very encouraging to know the good work that is being done and how God is using it to His Glory. I particularly like to see the good work being done for the young people and with what good results.

I also think that “Citadel Scene” is very well edited and presented - I offer my congratulations to all who are responsible for its compilation.

Greetings to you all and may God continue to bless you and use you.

With Christian love,

Tina

NB: I would like to add my thanks and congratulate Darren for his quality creative skills, focus and fine temperament which enables us to get Citadel Scene out in good time each month. Ed.

Report to SalvationistPete Plowman, Southsea Corps Caretaker and member of a local Baptist Church, was one of a group of five street pastors who under-took a 14 day charity cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End raising funds for their individual charities.

Pete personally raised over £2000 for ‘Smile4Wessex’ a charity based in the hospital where he was treated for a major illness in 2010. Pete found the cycling experience a spirit-filled adventure, bringing him close to God and relying on the Lord’s strength to sustain him .

The group of riders were blessed and moved by the generosity and fullness of support received from all Church stop-overs where they received shelter and food every evening, including four Salvation Army centres.

The first stop-over was at Wick Corps (picture, Pete on far right) with the final stop-over at Liskeard Corps.

Welcome stop-overs were also made at Carlisle Corps and DHQ Exeter. T.M.

CommunityCafé Menus

You may have noticed that our menus include a story / message which is changed from time to time.

If you have any suitable material which could be used, then please pass to Captain Lynne.

The late Mr Ronald Edward Chadwick

Mr & Mrs Chadwick were regular visitors to our Community Café for a number of years. They travelled in from Waterloov-

ille and enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and volunteers and the quality of the meals served.

Unfortunately ‘Ron’ passed away on the 19th June 2012 and the funeral took place at Portchester Crematorium on the 11th July. It was the family’s wish that instead of flowers, donations were made to The Salvation Army for their work in the community in Southsea. I recently met with Mrs Chadwick who presented me with cheques amounting to £360.

We give thanks for the life of Ron and acknowledge the work of the staff and volunteers in the Café and the Charity Shop.

My Experience of Extra Time

I enjoy working with Faith & Football and supporting their work in the Schools. At the start of my first year I was nervous, but felt I

needed a new challenge.

Like the children, my confidence grew while helping them with their reading and learning about Jesus and how much He loves them. The children are a joy to teach.

My second year was just as rewarding, although far more challenging. Some children needed extra attention at times; quite difficult when we were short of reading mentors, but our prayers for God’s guidance helped us through. The children still read the Bible stories and enjoyed their group sessions, for we had made them aware that Jesus loves them no matter what.

I had no hesitation in accepting a third year challenge at St. George’s Beneficial School when Naomi asked me. I’m looking forward to meeting and helping the new children with their reading through the Bible Stories and group sessions. It’s very rewarding work. At the end of each year you can see Jesus’ love shine through the children.

Annual Appeal - The Big Collection

Every week we see sacks and re-cycling bins by the roadside ready for a big collection on scheduled days.

This year The Salvation Army has changed the name of the ANNUAL APPEAL to THE BIG COLLECTION. This signifies that we should really make a determined effort to achieve the best result with our monetary collection.

Door-to-door teams will be collecting with sealed boxes in various parts of the city. These teams will be the same as last year and we are always in need of more collectors to enable us to cover as much of the district as possible. I would stress that you do not need to belong to our Move-ment to collect and permits are issued. It has proved to be a rewarding experience as we make contact with the members of the public. I will be pleased to link you with a group near to where you live.

Hayling Island and Emsworth will be collected with envelopes. Major Les Green is in need of assistance in Emsworth with distribution and collec-tion. Please approach Les.

In order that we may keep account of our progress it is asked that (where possible) collecting is carried out during the first two weeks of September.

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to undertake door-to-door collect-ing then I would invite you to take a money box from the display table and place it in your home for an all year round collection!

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all who have collected on Standing Days.

All my work is for the Master, He is all my heart’s desire.

Sunbury Court & ICOFrom the desk of the Divisional Commander Lt Col Graham Owen

Following extensive discussion, investigation and consultation it has been decided that a major redevelopment of Sunbury Court,

near London, will be undertaken. This will secure the provision of a venue for all High Councils - the body that elects the General of The Salvation Army.

Subject to the necessary planning permission being granted, work will begin in January 2013. In addition, the International College for Officers (ICO) and Centre for Spiritual Life Development (CSLD) will move permanently to Sunbury Court from the current location at The Cedars in Sydenham Hill during the Summer of 2014.

Sunbury Court and the ICO/CSLD are important to the international Salvation Army and have a special place in the hearts and minds of Salvationists around the world. Redevelopment and relocation of these venues will enable:

• the substantial restoration and improvement of the Grade 2 listed mansion at Sunbury.

• the construction of sufficient accommodation for all members of future High Councils.

• a location with the appropriate space, facilities and ambience for the ICO/CSLD.

• the demolition of unused buildings and landscaping to enhance the environment of the whole site.

The project allows International Headquarters to maximise the use of these property assets as good stewards of God-given resources. In so doing, a site of such historical significance to The Salvation Army is protected and made fit for purpose in the 21st Century.

My daily bible reading and devotional time are often guided by some-thing akin to traffic lights!

Off I go with the “green light” that sets me reading at my normal pace. Then something in a verse (a yellow light) makes me slow down and reflect. Finally every now and then, a red light.; A verse in God’s word brings me to a halt. Often it means a long stop. A word that illuminates something in my daily walk, or something links up to a friend in need.

Here is just such a verse that brought me to a halt this week.It linked itself to my ‘Pause for thought’, for September, so I leave it with you to reflect upon.

Isaiah 30:18 “The Lord is waiting to be kind to you. He rises to have compassion on you. The Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for Him.” (GW translation)

F.B.Meyer has a five word com-mentary on this verse: “God’s delays are not denials”.

Let’s conclude with a prayer for the coming autumn season. Changing themetaphor of the traffic lights to that of a giant bird, with outstretched wings.

“O God our Father, how can we thank you for your Holy Word, and themany methods which You use to gain our confidence and love! Give usgrace to return to our rest beneath the shadow of Your wings.” Amen.
