• UCS Domain • A UCS Manager instance based on a pair of UCS Fabric Interconnects and all servers attached

to it including any B-Series chassis, M-Series chassis, C-Series servers connected directly or through a Nexus 2232.

• UCS Manager • Management interface to UCS in XML-API

• UCS Manager GUI – Application used to configure UCS

• UCS Manager CLI – CLI functionality of UCS Manager

• Policy • A rule that consistenly configures the server, LAN, and SAN abstracting it from the server type,

• Pool • A group of identities that can be used once per UCS domain

• Service Profile • A management definition that is used to apply all configuration options including Policies, Pools,

vNIC templates, vHBA templates, Storage templates to a specific server.

• Templates: • A template consistently configures service profiles for similar workloads

• vHBA Template – A template that can be used to consistently deploy an HBA on a server

• vNIC Template – A template that can be used to consistently deploy an NIC on a server

• Service Profile Template - A template that can be used to consistently deploy service profiles. Can contain vHBA and vNIC templates.

• Server related pools • Server Pool – Used to quickly assign multiple servers quickly. Avoid except for large similar envionrments.

• UUID Pool - Used to assign UUID to the servers and is migrated when a service profile is migrated. Generally used for software licensing.

• LAN related pools • IP Pool Ext-mgmt – Used to assign hardware management addresses to the servers

• IP Pool iscsi-initiator-pool – Used to assign iSCSI addresses for iSCSI boot

• MAC Pool - Used to assign MAC address to vNIC interfaces. Each MAC for each vNIC for each Service Profile should be configured to use addresses from MAC Pools.

• SAN related pools • WWNN Pool – World Wide Node Name: Each server with a VIC and an HBA gets a WWNN.

• WWPN Pool – World Wide Port Name: Each vHBA gets a WWPN for each HBA being presented to the OS.

• IQN Pool – Used for iSCSI boot

• LAN related pools • UUID Pool - Used to assign UUID to the servers and is migrated when a service profile is migrated. Generally used

for software licensing.

• Insure you are implementing a supported solution • Most current OS and hardware is supported but check versions and caveats.

• B-Series Interoperability – Includes most B-Series and C-Series UCS Manager integrated UCS hardware, adapters, and OS support.

• C-Series Interoperability – Includes standalone rack server hardware, adapters, and OS support.

• Storage Interoperability – Includes the support for attachment to storage including storage devices and SAN switches.

• Some hardware not on the Cisco Interoperability Matrix’s may be supported by those vendors with UCS. Check with your hardware vendor.

• Cisco may approve unique environments via RPQ process

• Review the site planning guide for physical requirements • Most equipment comes with rails designed for 4 post racks. 3rd party for 2 post racks.

• Insure you have the power whips in place or get them installed. Identify and label them.

• Insure you have racks or order Cisco racks.

• Insure you have PDUs or order Cisco PDUs. Order the right power cords for the devices!

• Management arms are ordered as options for the rack servers and are usually not configured.

• If your rack has square holes you will need a square hold adapter kit: N20-CRMK2-RHA=)

• Rack mounting screws are only included with the racks. Cisco sells them separately.

• RACK-FASTEN-001= Mounting screws (qty 100), M6 and RACK-FASTEN-002= Cage nuts (qty 50), M6

• Insure the site infrastructure team is available during the install • Physically connects the new hardware and PDUs to the infrastructure

• Run any physical wires (ideally this is done in advance)

• LAN connectivity planning • Identify the ports and port speeds for connecting the UCS.

• Identify the specific media you will use for the connections (SFP’s Etc).

• Identify the specific cables required based on the media and distance.

• Make sure all of the above is available and/or ordered in advance of installation.

• LAN addressing planning • 3 addresses for Fabric Interconnects and cluster.

• 1 address for each server considering growth – 1 address for each SP if remote booting.

• Insure the LAN infrastructure team is available during the install • Connect UCS to the infrastructure.

• Configuring northbound switches, port channels, vPC’s, Jumbo frames, and appropriate vLANs.

• Allocating storage for boot and/or storage luns (including iSCSI and NFS connections).

• Zoning service profiles/vHBA’s to storage. Directly connected FC storage can “auto-zone”

• Advantages to a test environment • Impact of changes – Better enables you to determine and plan for change impacts.

• Test new solutions – Testing is best done in non-production environments.

• Flexibility – Test systems can be borrowed to grow production while orders in process.

• Training – Staff has real hardware available for education and training.

• Use pools for all addressing • Local addressing is possible but is strongly discouraged.

• Sequential pools are non-default option but often desirable.

• Make them big enough for a bunch of servers. They are free! 256 or 512 is best.

• Each UCS domain should have a set of unique pools defined • This is especially important if they may end up on the same network as one another.

• For most environments use a minimal set of pools like the default pools (WWPN’s are exception).

• For larger and more complex environments customers might find value using multiple pools to help identify workload types and interfaces via assigned addresses.

• Be cautious with Server Pools • It’s best to avoid using pools except for larger for dynamic environments.

• Should avoid changing policies if used in production especially bios policies. Create new policy that incorporates old settings and new settings. Change the policy used in the Service Profile Templates. This allows fast and reliable rollback of previously good settings.
