Q. What is the Cisco ® 7200VXR Series Port Adapter Jacket Card?

A. It is a carrier card that holds a single (selected) port or service adapter that f its into

the I/O controller slot of the Cisco 7204VXR and 7206VXR chassis (Figure 1). By

taking advantage of the dedicated PCI bus that connects the I/O controller slot to

the Cisco 7200VXR Series NPE-G1 and NPE-G2 Network Processing Engines, the

Cisco 7204VXR and 7206VXR chassis can increase their slot capacity by one.

Although the Port Adapter Jacket Card provides only one more slot, the addition of

600 bandwidth points increases the overall PCI bus capacity by 50 percent,providing up to 1800 bandwidth points for port adapters.

Q.What are the benefits of using the Port Adapter Jacket Card?

A. Using it provides a cost-eff icient way to transparently increase the port and slot

capacity of the existing Cisco 7204VXR and 7206VXR chassis with minimal operational

impact.The extra port adapter slot allows users to rearrange the chassis to the mostoptimal conf iguration that yields the highest number of usable port adapter slots

without "oversubscribing" the PCI bandwidth point limit of 600 points per side (the

odd-numbered slots and the even-numbered slots).

MSFC3

The MSFC3 is an integral part of the Supervisor Engine 720, providing high performance,

multilayer switching and routing intelligence. Equipped with a high performance processor,the MSFC runs layer 2 protocols on one CPU and layer 3 protocols on the second CPU.These

include routing protocol support, layer 2 protocols (Spanning Tree Protocol and VLAN

Trunking Protocol for example), and security services.

The MSFC builds the Cisco Express Forwarding information Base (FIB) table in software and

then downloads this table to the hardware Application-specif ic-integrated circuits (ASICs) on

the PFC3 and Distributed forwarding engine (if present) that make the forwarding decisions

for IP Unicast and multicast traff ic.

PFC3The Supervisor Engine 720 features the PFC3, which is equipped with a high-performance

ASIC complex supporting a range of hardware-based features.The PFC3 supports routing and

bridging, QoS, and multicast packet replication, and processes security policies such as
