Congrats to CIS students, Olivia Z, Dani S, Thomas S, Daniel G, and Erik B (not pictured) who entered the 2016 KPMG Brain Bowl Tourna- ment this week. They were up against other local schools and represented CIS well. Undefeated throughout the whole tournament, CIS students beat the Triple C team in the last round to emerge as winners, claiming the prizes of Amazon Echo stations, Fitbits and Beats headsets. The tournament is a knowledge quiz with questions geared toward many topics: mathematics, religion, spelling, history, Caribbean topics, geography and science. The schools compete in teams of four students in a series of rounds of 20 questions. The aim of the competition is to unite local schools and encourage pupils to stretch their academic abilities, work as a team and develop their critical thinking skills. CIS is very proud of these students and encourages them to continue to strive for excellence! A special thank you to Ms. Beth and all of the teachers who assisted with preparing the students for this event. Under 13 Girls make CIS Proud! We would like to congratulate all of our girls for a great team performance, leadership and character. What are your favorite books? Why? -My favorite books are Life of Pi, Great Gatsby, and Catcher in the Rye. It sounds like I don’t read any books outside of school, but these books just happened to have themes and concepts that I really liked and connected with. However, it could be that I noticed the themes and concepts more since I had to since we studied them in school.
What is the greatest crisis we face as a world? -A crisis that we face today is the promotion of ignorance and bigotry. Whether it be on a smaller scale such as in schools, or on a great scale such as in government and politics, somehow in our world it is tolerated when it shouldn’t be.
What is your favorite movie and why? -My favorite movie is Like Crazy. It’s directed by Drake Doremus, my favorite director. I love the way his movies are so realistic. He uses amazing upcoming actors and actresses, and two of his movies, including Like Crazy, have soundtracks done by Dustin O’Halloran, a composer who I also really like.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why? -If I could have any superpower, it would be teleportation so that I could go anywhere in the world whenever I wanted. The first places I would go would be to visit my friends that live in other places, and then I would go to all the places in the world that I’ve always wanted to visit.
If you could eat dinner with any 3 people (deceased or alive) who would they be? -Charles Bukowski, Kathe Kollwitz, and Sally Mann.
What are your plans after you graduate from CIS? -After I graduate from CIS I plan to go to art school, but I’m not sure yet what I’m planning on studying. I would like to study something that allows me to get a job that I actually enjoy, so that I don’t feel like it’s just a way for me to make money for eight hours a day. I want to feel like my job is actually a part of my life, not just a way to make money so I can enjoy the other parts of my life.
I was born in England, and on both my mom and dad’s side I’m British. I’ve lived in England and Cayman, and I’ve been living in Cayman for 13 years and only ever attended CIS. For the most part, I’m pretty easygoing, and try not to take life too seriously. If my friends are in a tough situa-tion, I always will try to help them de-stress. I love going out to the beach or for drives, but I can also enjoy staying in and watching movies. However, being laid back has its downsides, because I can tend to procrastinate a lot when it concerns things I’m not very passionate about.
CIS Mission Statement: Our students achieve academic and personal excellence and prepare for higher education within an international environment that inspires learning, character and service.
