Scott, born on 9th November 1880, was born into a tradition of architects and his choice of profession was to be no different. His father was George Gilbert Scott (1839-1897), who was less famous than his son, and his grandfather, the equally celebrated, Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878). Giles’ mother, Ellen, decided that her two sons should follow in their father’s footsteps and encouraged her children to visit Sussex’s ecclesiastical architecture, which she aptly named ‘steeplechasing’.

In 1899 Scott was articled to Temple Lushington Moore so he could learn the trade, although Moore had a fairly distant teaching style, conducting most of his work from his home in Hampstead. This enabled Scott to freely develop his ideas and on entering a design competition for a new Anglican cathedral in Liverpool 1902, he pipped Moore to the post as Scott’s designs were selected.

He made bold moves to design the Cathedral, and met great success. Scott was an exciting prospect; he became the youngest full academician at the Royal Academy since Turner in 1922, and was knighted in 1924. He became known as one of the most sophisticated and accomplished inter-war ecclesiastical designers in Britain, with many churches and chapels to his name. During the First World War he served as a Major in the

Royal Marines, supervising the construction of defences in the English Channel. Despite his classical training he became known for his clever combinations of traditional designs with modern technology and materials. As a result he was brought in as consultant architect to the Battersea Power Station in 1930, refining J. Theo Halliday’s designs. From the remodeling of the four corner chimneys to the ‘jazz modern’ fluting on the walls he managed to humanize the enormous structure without taking away from its industrial integrity; and in so doing moved industrial architecture away from the ‘usual corrugated iron’. Once built Scott’s power station became known as a ‘temple of power’. In 1933 Scott was made president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1944. Some of his most famous other works included the Bankside power station, now the Tate Modern, the classic red telephone box design and the Grand Midland Hotel, St Pancras. He was, however, a very simple and down-to-earth man who loved both his wife, Louise, and his golf, and many were shocked by the great architect’s ‘modest’ appearance.

He died in hospital aged 80 whilst working on the preliminary details for the Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King at Plymouth; testament to his passion for architecture.
