NEWS FROM LONDON

BY JACK NIBLETT

The Circus Hassani (The circus without ani-mals) after its short ill-starred winter seasonhas been revived for a summer tour, help com-ing from an unexpected source. The Hassani family reportedly sank all of theirsavings into the show and lost over $40,000 inthe process, but have now been bailed out bythe RSPCA the animal protection society, astem opponent of performing animals for manyyean, they have been quoted as coming for-ward with an offer of $10,000 for the Hassanispresumably in an effort to sustain their opin-ion that a circus without trained animals couldstilt draw the public and be a financial success.Circus Hassani's bill has been strengthened byartists from the defunct Gerry Cottle Circusin the shape of the large Santus Julian family(cyclists, jugglers, comedy tumblers) and theclown Matto; and opened its summer seasonat Nottingham on June 9th. The circus is atpresent playing the London suburbs and Isaw the show at Clapham Common, a venuefor many big circuses in the past. The four pole tent was neat and colorful, at-tendants uniformed, correctly garbed ringma-ster, music by organ and drums, and the wholeshow being presented on a raised circularstagewhich filled the customary ring space. The program, which lasted two hours, includ-ing and interval ran as follows:Hassani Clown Charivari; Los Kansas, jugglers;Miss Gina, corde lisse; Clowns Matto and Paul, strong man gag; Danyarhi and Co., illusions; aGorilla comedy on sway pole; Tan-Tan, Arabtumblers; Sisters Mack, western act; SantusJulian, cyclists; Clown photographer; DebbieSue, swinging ladder; Clown and Hair Grow-ing gag; Two Beraras, foot jugglers; Billy Tem-

pest, escapologist; The Loonies, comedy acro-bats; Sasha Coco, son of the late famous Cocothe clown, and brother-in-law to Mr. Hassani, and who was due to appear in his father's cir-cus costumes and make-up as Coco II was un-able to appear at the performance which I sawowing to illness.I have to confess that despite initial prejudiceI enjoyed the show. The pace, variety of acts, performance and excellent wardrobe were allso good I felt that I failed, at the time, to no-tice the complete absence of animal acts, tcame away feeling that I had seen a goodshow - but not quite a circus!David Smart's Super Circus also opened inJune, at Battersea Park, quite close to CentralLondon, for a long summer season. This is un-questionably, the most sumptious tented cir-cus which England has seen for a long time, and must easily have cost the money that Mr.Smart claims was spent on the show.

The elaborate box office, front doors, band-stand, lighting effects and the colossal fourpole tent with its rows of seats, of which morethan half are individual chairs, are all quitebreath-taking with their style. With a programto match the rich surroundings David Smart, with real courage in this uncertain year, hasdone everything to encourage the customers, and to revive a flagging interest in the circus. The program opens with "Supersomic" circusband playing a specially written overture, "TheFamily of Circus" and a welcome from the"World's Most Glamorous Ringmistress", Yas-mine Smart. Then follows: The ConstantiniGroup on the giant trampoline; The Paulsons, aerial cradle; Yasmine Smart with Arabian Li-berty horses; The Koziaks, Russian bar act;Mimo di Lello, comedy car; Dany Cesar, Manon the Moon equilibrist; Roberts Bros, ele-phants; Interval; The Koziaks, perch pole; LosCastrns, high wire; Yasmine Smart and Dany

in theBEROSINI PLEADS GUILTY

(The following information is from an articleby Don Quinn, which appeared in the Imper-ial Valley Press (Ca/ifJ on July 10, 1980).

Jungle cat owner-trainer Otto Berosini plead-ed guilty to a misdemeanor violation of stateregulations prohibiting the possession of wildanimals without a permit. The guilty plea in El Centro Municipal Courtcame during the second day of a jury trial andended a series of plea bargaining negotiationsbetween defense counsel Eduardo Rivera andthe district attorney's office. In return for the guilty plea, Deputy DistrictAttorney Cheryl Bueno dismissed four addi-tional charges related to possession and stateregulations governing the proper care of wildanimals.Municipal Court Judge William Lehnhardt sen-tenced Berosini to one year summary probation and a representative for the state Dept. ofFish and Game issued a temporary permit forBerosini to move his animals out of Californiawithin a 48 hour period, effective July 14th.Later, Berosini, said, "I am being deportedfrom the state of California." He seemed dis-satisfied with the decision to plead guilty andremarked that he had no other choice.Representatives of the Wildlife Waystation inSan Fernando were given a check for $4,251to cover care, feeding and veterinary expen-ses for Berosini's animals following their seiz-ure by Fish and Game Warden Robert Flynton May 10th.The check was signed by Mrs. Sylvia L. Cole, wife of a former county conciliator, who be-came a firm supporter of Berosini shortly af-ter his troubles were made public. Berosinisaid he will repay Mrs. Cole's donation.A spokesman for the animal refuge said thecost of keeping Berosini's animals was basedon a figure of $6.42 per day for each of theanimals (1 lion, 3 tigers) and S3.66 per dayfor each of the two leopards. Water, addition-al care and cleaning cages for all six animalscame to an additional S9 per day. There werealso more than $1,000 in veterinary expenses. The trail had been expected to continue andDeputy District Attorney Ken Chinn had ex-pected to call one more witness in the prosce-cution of Berosini.

Berosini was named in separate criminal char-ges alleging possession of a prohibited specieswithout a permit and housing animals in sub-standard cages.Berosini said he was committed to fightingthe case in court despite an earlier settlementoffer. Berosini said if he won, the state mustgive his animals back.

Berosini hit the headlines earlier this yearwhen one of his "love trained" lions was re-ported loose in the Calexico area and theState Fish and Game people investigated.According to testimony by Fish and GameWarden Robert Flynt, two tigers, a lion, andthree leopards were located at a ranch in Ca-lexico.Flynt said some of the animals were on leash-es attached to a van while others were in cagesthat did not conform to state standards. The Fish and Game official said a man identi-fied as Jerry Douglas Smith said he was car-ing for the animals for Berosini. Smith repor-tedly said he did not have permits for thecats, but that Berosini did. Smith, however, was not sure of Berosini's whereabouts.Flynt told the jury, "I verified some permitshad been issued by the state to a Berosini forapes but not to Otto Berosini."When questioned about the size of the cages,Flynt said the Bengal tiger, for example, wasin a cage about 4 ft. x 8 ft. x 4 ft. But incross examination Flynt admitted that hedid not take actual measurements of anycage found at the ranch location.Flynt seized the animals on the order of Ca-lexico Municipal Court Judge Robert Foxand although Berosini reportedly calledFlynt and said he was enroute to Calexicowith the permits, "Mr. Berosini never arrivedand the cats were sent to the Wildlife Way-station shelter in San Fernando Valley,"Flynt said.Deputy Chinn, who prosecuted with co-worker Bueno, then questioned Flynt about anagreement Berosini signed on May 6th, whichallowed Berosini to take his animals back toLas Vegas.Flynt said the agreement was a culminationof several meetings between stete represent-atives and Berosini and, in some cases, Baro-sini's then defense counsel, Walter Cress.

The routes in Circus Report listed The TentTroupe as being in Greenfield, Ind., July 12thand since I was going to be enroute from theBaraboo parade to the Peru Circus Festival itwas right on my way. On the mid-way was a smalt novelty stand and souvenirtent and a concession trailer. In the backyard was a 30x60 pad room anda 20x40 cook tent. I found the group to beextremely friendly and was invited to jointhem for lunch. The matinee was a production for childrenentitled "Treasured Island Tales." All nine-teen of the cast members take part, tellingin story and song of life on different islandsof the world. The evening show was "Inheritthe Wind", a play in 5 scenes and 3 acts. CARSON & BARNES CIRCUS

BY KAREN CART

Carson & Barnes has been the scene of a lotof activity recently. It started June 26th whenGen. Supt., Geary Byrd celebrated his birthdaywith a copkout for the entire show. The 175guests enjoyed charcoaled bratwursts, bakedbeans, potato salad, etc, as well as the tradi-tional cake and ice cream. On July 4th, Owner and President D. R. Mil-ler, Isla Miller, their grand-daughter, TraciByrd and Publicity and Public Relations Dir-ector Ted Bowman left for Baraboo, Wise.,to see the circus parade sponsored by theCircus World Museum and to participate inthe associated activities. D. R. was guest spea-ker at the National Circus Historical SocietyConvention banquet on Sunday evening. Theyreturned to the show on July 7th. BarbaraByrd and daughter, Kristin, went to Baraboofor the day on the 5th to see the parade. Allreported the trip was well worthwhile as theyreally enjoyed the parade, all the events andseeing old friends.

The highlight of the recent activities was theraising of the new big top. It is another firstfor 0. R, Miller, It is probably the largest pushpole top in use in this country. It was manu-factured in Italy according to D. R.'s design

and specifications. It is a UU with 4 forties,1 fifty and 2 twenties. It will accommodatethe 5 rings, with the track as in the old tent.On July 9th, they made a trial run by spread-ing the tent and putting up two center poles.Despite the 100 plus temperature and short-ness of time, Barbara Byrd's birthday couldn'tbe overlooked. She and approximately 25guests enjoyed dinner at the local steak house. Then in the evening when it was cooler, allhad birthday cake and ice cream.July 10th, at Storm Lake, Iowa, was the bigday. The new tent went up and was used forthe first time. The inside is two-toned bluestripes with red, white and blue stars. Theoutside is orange and blue stripe; the sidewallis blue with a yellow stripe with the Carson &Barnes logo in orange going completely aroundit. There are matching ring mats for each of the5 rings and orange and blue flags for the 8 polesIt is beautiful and being water resistant andwith a minimum amount of rope and cable ispractical.Visitors during this time, in addition to yourstruly, and Mrs. Kelly Miller, were: Albert andAnita Vonderhied, their daughters, Mari andSusan, Dan and Rosalie Draper, Don Frances, and Jim Me Roberts. The Vonderheids joinedthe show for Geary's birthday, then went toBaraboo for the activities there, afterwardsreturning to the show for Barbara's borthday,to see the net tent go up, and to celebrateMaria's birthday on July 12th.

EH3MEHIBELT BREAK BLAMED IN FATAL FALL

BY HARRY GRAHAM

Jesus Segrera says it was a mechanic belf fail-ure that cost Ringling-Barnurn flyer Julio Fa-rias his life last month during a practice ses-sion in Tucson, Ariz.Julio's catcher-father Fidel was in the ringcoaching and his cousin Jorge Page was hand-ling the mechanic cables when the tragic acci-dent occured. Jorge formerly flew with theFarias, but was an apprentice catcher thisyear.

Segrera is catcher-boss of the Flying Segreras, who also work their act on the Ringling BlueUnit. His wife is Julio's mother's sister. On the fatal fall, Julio turned the three-and-a-half, then Page took up the slack in the me-chanic cables, as he was supposed to do. Butthere was a loop in one of the cables, whichkinked in one of the pulleys.Julio was thrown to one side, and Segrerasays the mechanic belt split. The flyer miss-

He fell on June 25,and died June 30th."It's the first time I ever heard of such an ac-cident happening," said Jesus in San Diegothe following week. "I just don't know of abelt ever breaking before."

Jesus said the death broke up the best two-team flying act the world has ever seen. Juliodid the three-and-a-half, and so did MiguelCaceras, Segrera's principal flyer. The Farias left the Ringting Blue Unit afterthe accident, Jesus said, He did not knowhow long it would be before they returned. The Flying Segreras are continuing their actwith the circus.Segrera said Julio apparently had a premoni-tion of death before the fall. The day beforethe accident, Julio was about to take leaveof his gir l fr iend, saying goodbye in Miami inpreparation to fly to Tucson to rejoin thecircus."Look at me for the last time/' Segrera saysJulio told the girl. "The next time you'll seeme in pieces."

CLOWN PLANS RETIREMENT

When the spotlight turns on the center ring ofthe Garden-Johnson Circus at Reno, Nevada, the weekend of Aug. 17th, it will mark thelast performance for Bob-0 the Clown, whoin real life is Robert E. Hitson. The grease paint, the shiny red nose, the bag-gy pants and the banjo shoes will come off, tobe hung up after 56 years of clowning for cir-cuses, fairs, carnivals and shopping centers. It's been a long journey for Bob-0 who wasborn in a small Tennessee town. He came toSacramento, Calif., at the age of 8 and wasinitiated into the theatrical world when he ap-peared in a Christmas scene in the window ofa Kimball-Upson Co. store. "I was the little

boy, dreaming in his bed when the fairy prin-cess arrived," he recalls.Hitson moved to Fresno during the Depres-sion, where he felt the urge to join the bigtop and so at 14 years of age he joined theBarnum & Bailey show, setting up seats andwatering animals. Later, after working as acandy butcher, he joined Clown Alley andcredits a lot of his knowledge to the late Fe-lix Adler."I can remember closing a show in Nashvilleon Sunday and driving more than a thousandmiles to open in Colorado Spring on Tues-day," he said. His work in the circus cooktent gave him asecond vocation, for Hitson and his wife, Is-abel, operated a restaurant for many years.

and at one time he operated the cafeteria inthe State consumer affairs building in Sacra-mento, but once again the lure of the circuswas too strong and he took to the road.Isabel has been designing his costumes andmaking them for the 23 years they've beenmarried."It's the children I'll miss most," he says astears well up in his eyes. "They bring joy tomy soul. It's great to see them laugh and havefun when there's so damned much sadness inthe world today. If I can make them laugh it'smore than money to me, mister."Two strokes and a severe heart attack last yearhave slowed Hitson down and forced Bob-0into retirement. The Reno performance for a Shrine children'sbenefit will be his last show."I've enjoyed this life. It's been most gratify*ing and I'd just like the kids to know I'm stillaround and kicking even though Bob-0 and Ican't clown anymore," Hitson said.

IN ORDER to find out how badly RinglingRed was suffering in that killer heat wave Ifinally wired WALLY NAGHTIN to call me.He said the animals seemed to be getting theworst of it, especially his bears which he kepthosed down with water. Several times theysimply refused to work and had to be putback in the cages. Some animals suffered heatprostration going from the building to thetrains. Wally said they traveled at night be-cause it was so hot cars actually burned theirmotors in the daytime. Business remainedgood due to air conditioning in the buildings.

PEDRO CARRILLO is up and about and theact is practicing though not working. Had hisfall not been broken by a net they were forc-ed to use in Glens Falls (NY) the accidentwould have been far more serious. Other thanthe pall cast over the show by the tragic deathof 16 year old JULIO FARIAS on RinglingBlue, Wally says everything is fine.

IT'S NOT A QUESTION of how much ashowman knows... IT'S A QUESTION OFWHAT HE DOES WITH IT.

A REPORTER from a local paper went downto the circus lot to interview the owner, hewanted some advice on how he managed sucha large show. "YOU'VE COME TO THEWORNG PERSON, JUST ASK ANYONE OFMY EMPLOYEES," said the owner.

FROM RALPH F. HARTMAN

I always enjoy reading CR. Once in a while Inote some article that I believe needs an ans-wer, and possibly a retraction. The story "Too Many Elephants" did not listthe writer. Some of it was interesting, butwhen it said that the White Elephants havewhite eyes, white palate, white tail hairs andwhite testicles, I realized that the person whowrote it didn't know what he was doing.Of course, white elephants are Albinos andnoted for their pink eyes. Their palates are notwhite. As for their "White Testicles", whendid you last see a pair of elephant testicles(testes), except possibly in a jar pickled? Youdidn't because they are situated high insidethe belly wall on each side. The situation issomewhat like a rooster. The act of caponizing requires a small incision in each side toremove these organs and often the mortalityis high. With elephants it's a much bigger deal, requir-ing two separate operations to castrate themand the mortality rate is very high. Many own-ers of male elephants would like to have themcastrated. Such an operation in California lastyear attracted elephant people from all over. The elephant unfortunately died. There may be some other castrated elephantsaround, but the only one I know of is the bigtusker who works center ring on Circus Vargas. He made it over the surgery

AT LIBERTYI am now available for Shrine Circus Parksor Fain, with my little 1910 Tin Lizzie M*del T Ford, radio controlled comedy car.
